November 27, 200916 yr Elf and safe tree!! Cone moan ... little girl turns A TOWN has blown £14,000 on this 33ft traffic cone - to replace "dangerous" Christmas trees. Officials feared the usual Norway fir - costing £500 - would topple over in high winds. They replaced it with the branchless artificial tree which has embedded lights and speakers to play music. But locals have branded it a traffic cone and witch's hat. Town chiefs - who have had to cut back on Christmas lights this year - say the fake is much safer and sturdier than the real tree. Residents in Poole, Dorset, have blasted the decision. Michelle James, 27, said: "It's like something that's landed from outer space - nothing like a Christmas tree." Shop owner Trish Glover added: "This health and safety lark has gone far enough." Poole's Town Centre Management Board, made up of firms and the council, came up with the idea to SAVE money. A real tree costs about £4,000 to put up. Town centre manager Richard Randall-Jones said: "People think you can just go into the woods, chop down a tree and put it up in the high street. But if it blows over and kills someone then somebody is liable for it." In previous years celebs switched on the tree lights, including ex-England and Spurs star Darren Anderton.
