Killer monkey.

KT shared this on my FB wall, thought I would like to share it with y'all.

If I'm not mistaken, this made headlines on the papers here today.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/world/8089461/monkey-kills-baby-in-snatch-attack/

A newborn baby has been killed in Malaysia by a monkey which snatched it from its home, bit its face and neck and then dropped it from a rooftop, reports said.

The four-day-old baby girl was sleeping in the living room of her family's home in Seremban, a town southeast of the Malaysian capital, on Wednesday when the macaque sneaked in and grabbed her.

The mother, 26-year-old V. Revathy, discovered the child missing and after a search found her body outside the house with serious bite and scratch wounds.

"We frantically searched all over the house and saw her body covered in blood lying outside the house," the child's grandfather A. Valayutham said according to the Star newspaper.

State wildlife and national parks director Ishak Muhamad said the monkey responsible was located and shot dead shortly after.

"We suspect the macaque was rummaging for food inside the house. It could have taken the baby to the roof thinking the newborn was food," he told the daily.

"The baby died when it fell to the ground. The monkey had apparently released the newborn, probably because it was alarmed by the parents' shouts," Ishak said.

Monkeys are common in urban areas in Malaysia, particularly macaques which can be aggressive, and bold enough to enter homes to search for food.

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAH This article makes Malaysia sound like a freaking jungle and we still live on stilt houses.

Perhaps the government should have a more systematic way of developing the country.

I disagree.

I think it highlights that in certain places you have monkeys in your country and that sometimes they go in people's houses. Is this not true? I't is not saying the monkey's behave this way towards humans often, just that in this incident it did. It mentions nothing about jungles or underdeveloped housing.

The article is about the tragic death of a baby, not a criticism of your country.

Yeah I think most people would understand that the article doesn't make cities in Malaysia sound like a jungle or anything. I've seen news reports (I don't know if they were in Malaysia) where some cities are overrun with those monkeys, and there's not much that can be done about it. It's kind of like the equivalent of rats or cockroaches in New York, except those monkeys are bigger and more aggressive. People shouldn't have to worry about an animal coming into their house and snatching their newborn.

Is there anything that can be done about the monkey population in the city? Or are they a "protected" species?

It's true, the pests here are quite. Err. Annoying.

I know it isn't highlighting Malaysia in that way, it just sounds a little like Malaysia is a jungle, which of course, in rural areas, it ain't all that developed. And I think the government should have a better development plan. If this sort of thing can happen, then housing areas should be developed more systematically so that pests will actually get a habitat of their own.

Yeah, it isn't criticism of my country, I know. I just think there should be a lesson learned from this, despite how fatal this is.

No, monkeys aren't. I think Orang Utans are.

There aren't monkeys in my neighbourhood, but I think other neighbourhoods do have. And they can be a real pest.

Oh, my HAHAHAHHAHAHA is not because this article is funny, I just find the fact that Malaysia seems like a jungle fascinating.

I don't think this article is funny, and I feel sorry for the family. Seriously, I have feelings too and gosh, if y'all thought I really meant the 'HAHAHAH' as funny, then it's just misinterpretation on your side, and my mistake in letting you misinterpret it.

And yeah, the monkey's at fault, but the monkey doesn't have a mind like a human, so I don't think the monkey killed the baby out of being malicious or revengeful.

Ahh, OK, I thought you were being sarcastic and I was missing something, when I read what you said about the government in the first post. Hopefully this tragedy will lead to better security.

Don't worry, I knew you weren't laughing at the article. I just found it interesting that that was what you highlighted from the article first and foremost. I was expecting some mention of the tragedy in your post. But of course I knew you were laughing something else.

I find it strange that the monkey was shot. And also that they managed to track it down.

I hope so too.

I thought that naturally, anyone would pity the family involved, and I sort of think that the family must have gotten loads of condolences to the point it's making them feel worse.

LOL. And how did they know they shot the responsible monkey.

This is gonna sound contradictory. I don't see how it's entirely the monkey's fault. On the surface that the monkey 'killed' the baby, yeah. But the monkey doesn't have a conscience and I suppose they are hungry and there was no food plus it's the rural area, so naturally, the monkeys would go to the houses to hunt for food. And I think the monkeys don't get much of their 'natural food' anymore.

It's not fair that people get off when they commit crimes and they have a conscience while animals get shot when they commit a 'murder' and they don't know right from wrong.

It's controversial, but I agree. This may be seen as hypocritical on my part since I was today posting about how I would eat pretty much any animal providing it was prepared properly. But I find it unfair to shoot the monkey. I could understand if they caged it, because it killed a human, but shooting seems harsh.

On the other hand if it had killed my baby I would have no trouble killing the monkey, and perhaps if I was in the situation where I had seen the horrific injuries to the baby I would have shot it (not that I can ever imagine myself having a gun).

From an outside perspective I say it's harsh and unfair, but then if I was in the situation I don't know how I would react.

I agree. We don't know what it's like unless we're in that situation.

I think shooting is quite common here. Though the justice it brings is more to satisfy a person's mind and for revenge, imo. There are seriously a great deal of monkeys here too. If the purpose of shooting the monkey is to eliminate a pest, then I suppose I could understand. My family does some pretty bad things towards pests too, and I admit to doing some.

I've heard of worse things done towards a monkey than just being shot.

Well now I'm intrigued :p

:P

Anyway, the newspapers reported today that they did not shoot the right monkey; the 'killer monkey' is still out there. It seems it's a dominant male.

And the baby that got killed hasn't even been named yet.
