Prince Myshkin
So there is a piece in New Scientist from last month (6 Nov) about methylation which means that the genetic slate probably isn't wiped clean for the next generation. Poor diet and bad parenting (neglect in particular) which can cause psychiatric disorders can be passed on to your children and your children's children, even if they do not go through the same events as you. They found that in rats, the ones that were put under a lot of stress gave birth to pups which were more likely to suffer from stress/anxiety. Those rats in turn gave birth to rats more likely to be depressed and suffer from stress and anxiety, even though their parents, or themselves had not been put under and actual stress, simply in a normal lab environment. Obviously they had rats under normal conditions and they had the normal chance of having pups that had stress/anxiety. I personally think it's pretty fascinating, and adds a whole new responsibility to people, which they can choose to take on or not take on. It shows the importance of looking after your mental health as much as you can.
LoryABjerre
So true but nowadays the family children are a trivial matter. there is no the family values of 50s. it's called the wicked progress, which dehumanizes the human. priority always goes to society, work. and the economy. how many kids are stressed out, no identification of good and bad no education, because parents are not. any time. Work, society demands more. it's sad but true
i'maveryneatMonster.'
Fucking genes! A genetic test is a good alternative to see if you have an issue that could be passed to your kids. I'm doing that soon T__T

Wyrd
Rats have rittens (they are really called like that in Dutch). In English I think it doesn't matter. Yeah, the mental disease and stress thing. My grandma went nuts, other family members as well. I recently got a burn-out, due to too much stress. I think my family is already pretty much fucked up :(

I'm doing that soon T__T Do you think it could be worth it? I guess it can be quite interesting....even though I can't see anything fucked up about myself that I could pass to my children

I guess it can be quite interesting....even though I can't see anything fucked up about myself that I could pass to my children I think it would be worth it Julia. I've heard so many stories about people, and doctors, having children with many problems just cos one of them had a little gene wrong. Where are you getting the test done? Do you have to pay? I don't think I'd want to do one, rather just wait and find out. I dunno, maybe a good lab that can offer studies like that. I would have to research, I'm doing that in about 3 years. Yes, you have to pay. I wouldn't want to have a translocation 14-21 (Down syndrome guilty little genes) and not know about it >.<

i'maveryneatMonster.'
It's less effective than women's surgery. I wouldn't cut off my uterus or ovaries or anything just cos I don't want to have children.
