Victoria
No, I hadn't heard of it until a year or so ago when I found it in a video rental store. What a gem! Very unusual, great music, very sad, but not at all 'showy' in the way of Hollywood. Recommend it strongly. It's on Channel 4 on Friday 31st - but VERY late at night. Victoria
Weeell - not knowing exactly how far you got .... Well, he sees a beautiful young girl one day, and plays this wonderful piece for her (but to himself because she's outside on deck and can't hear him), and he falls in love with her immediately and eventually speaks to her, but doesn't really say very much, except that he seems to have known her father. She says where she lives and he vows to himself to go ashore and visit. He gets all ready and has a huge send-off, but chickens out on the steps and comes back without ever setting foot on dry land. The film cuts to a long time in the future, when the ship is a rotting hulk about to be destroyed - the trumpet playing guy (his friend) comes looking for him, telling the authorities there is someone still aboard. He finds him and it's a very emotional scene when 1900 says goodbye for ever. Then they blow up the ship and the film plays out to the song he wrote for the girl. A real tearjerker, I can tell you!
