2012 Songs Worth Listening To

Featured Replies

I was wondering why there wasn't a thread for 2012 songs - hearing a song from an album or EP might just be the hook that draws people into that musician's discography. Not to mention that there's some good songs worth hearing from otherwise forgettable albums (I'm looking at you Sleigh Bells).

Enough rambling - here are some 2012 songs you need to check out (and I'm sure I'm leaving off a bunch of other great songs):

Actress - Actress Meets Shangaan Electro

Akkord – The Drums

Beach House - Irene, Lazuli, Myth, On the Sea

Burial - Ashtray Wasp, Kindred, Loner (just get the Kindred EP!)

Burial/Four Tet - Nova

Chromatics - Back From the Grave, Kill For Love, Lady

Cloud Nothings – Wasted Days

Dirty Projectors - Gun Has No Trigger

Grimes - Be a Body, Genesis, Oblivion

Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built

John Talabot – Destiny (ft Pional), Journeys (ft Ekhi), Last Land, So Will Be Now... (ft Pional)

Julia Holter – Boy in the Moon, In the Same Room, Moni Mon Amie

Kendrick Lamar – Cartoon & Cereal (ft Gunplay), The Recipe (ft Dr. Dre)

King Felix - Spring 01

Laurel Halo - Light + Space

Lone - Crystal Caverns 1991

Lotus Plaza - Black Buzz, Monolights, Strangers, White Galactic One

The Men – Candy, Open Your Heart

SBTRKT – Hold On (Sisi BakBak Remix)

Scuba – The Hope, If U Want, NE1BUTU

Sharon Van Etten – All I Can, Give Out, We are Fine

Sigur Rós - Dauðalogn, Ég Anda, Ekki Múkk

Sleigh Bells - End of the Line

Spiritualized - Hey Jane, So Long You Pretty Things

Usher - Climax

Good thread! :)

Pretty much agree with those. Also:

Jai Paul - Jasmine

Sussane Sundfor - White Foxes

Arcade Fire - Abraham's Daughter

Can't remember more right now

Does Radiohead - Identikit count?

Ohh nice idea! I'm much more of a listen to a song kinda person then a sit down and listen to a whole album kinda person. I don't have that long of tension span..

I'd recommend songs, but I haven't listened to much this year..

Let's get real - this is the song/video of 2012:

Lovely 80s influenced synth pop.

Doesn't hurt that Caroline Polachek is very cute

it's extremely good. very similar to Justin Timberlake and early 2000s R&B, which I looooove. might not be your kinda thing though

It's an ok song; at the very least, it shows a maturation of Justin Bieber's sound. He's no longer in the "Baby Baby Baby Ohhhhhh" phase.

Plus it pales to the vastly superior "Call Me Maybe" :)

If it pales in comparison to the extremely irritating Call Me Maybe.. Then I'm definitely not listening to it! Ugghhh, that song makes me angry.

Why do they both have to be canadian :disappointed:

Oh shit, forgot about Call Me Maybe. Definitely pop song of the year.

Great pop song. I was actually going to include it but it's technically a 2011 release. :(

My top 5 so far..

Susanne Sundfør - Rome

Blaudzun - Another Ghost Rocket

Dirty Three - Furnace Skies

Anaïs Mitchell - Shepard

Mark Lanegan - Ode to Sad Disco

hey parrat u frgot rihanna u da 1.

wut?

Even I don't know anymore :hangover:

But serious time, I am actually curious as to your opinion with "pop" songs ("pop" meaning RnB and the general type of music that is popular with the majority of mainstream media today).

I notice you do actually acknowledge and enjoy some of it.

So my question is: What is the difference between a bad pop song and a good one.

Could you give one example of a very popular pop song that you thing is horrible, and one that you think is good - and tell me why?

Thanks!

im not parrotdies but

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RnPB76mjxI]Usher - OMG ft. will.i.am - YouTube[/ame]

(bad)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNTyfVh3nmU]Usher - Climax - YouTube[/ame]

(amazing)

Why do you guys both enjoy Climax so much? I certainly can notice the tight production it has and it's well crafted. But it sounds so generic to me. EDUCATE ME

does it really sound generic to you? it sound really special to me...it's not like the kind of thing that's playing on the radio. it's not a stupid club banger, it's a real song with real emotions. i like how minimal it is compared to the huge electro pop party rockers kinda thing

It sounds like a 90s pop song to me, a lot like some of the backstreet boys' stuff.
