Private service remembers Aberfan
Survivors of the Aberfan disaster, which killed 144 people, mainly children, have joined bereaved relatives at a private service. A tip slid on to the village school and 18 homes on 21 October, 1966, leaving 116 children and 28 adults dead. About 100 people gathered at Aberfan cemetery to lay wreaths, among them some families who had never before attended on the anniversary day. Welsh sporting events will also mark the anniversary during the weekend. Welsh Secretary Peter Hain and First Minister Rhodri Morgan were among those who joined in the prayers as the wreaths were laid. A church service will be held in the village tonight. Elsewhere, Cardiff City players will wear black armbands during their game at Norwich on Saturday, and there will be a minute's silence before football matches in the Welsh Premiership and at rugby games. A documentary being screened on BBC Two Wales on Saturday will chart the progress of work being carried out by American artist Shimon Attie with the people of Aberfan to create new images of the village. The artist had never heard of Aberfan before going to the town, and wants to help provide the village with an alternative public face from the well-known pictures of the disaster. He said: "I'm trying to use modern art to help normalise the village. I want it to be merely an ordinary Welsh village amongst other Welsh villages." More than 40 people from Aberfan have taken part in the photographic and video installation, using objects from their daily home and working lives. The participants talk about dealing with the grief and stress of the disaster, some detailing the guilt they felt at surviving where others perished. None of them are being named, in a bid to allow them to remain anonymous once the exhibition is over. The finished pieces will be shown in the National Museum of Wales in the new year. At a service in Merthyr Tydfil on Thursday, Father Michael St Clair said: "I was asked several times, what do I think is the need for such a commemoration. "We pray that all those who lost their lives are brought to that place of peace, light and happiness. "Why do we commemorate so many things? Because we are a people who remember. "Why are we here in these valleys? Coal is responsible. "In those days they didn't realise what they were doing, in our days we are so concerned with global warming and the effect on the environment. "What can we do to make things better for the future?" At Thursday's service, First Minister Rhodri Morgan called on the people of Wales to remember those who died. He said: "Everyone can remember how they heard about Aberfan. "I first heard about it on the lunchtime news that day and found it hard to make sense of the horror of it - the fact that a primary school had been buried, that so many children had died and the scale of the rescue operation. "This was the 1960s. Wales still had 100,000 miners and coal was king. Coal was so important that we all accepted - until Aberfan - that there was a price to pay and we were all prepared to pay it. "What we never foresaw was that coal could take the lives of our children. That was new, and terrible." The landslide of muddy coal waste demolished Pantglas Junior School and neighbouring houses. Readings at Thursday's service were given by councillor Jeff Edwards, one of the pupils who survived the disaster at Pantglas. The mayor of Merthyr, Ian Clark, said: "We pray for the families and friends of all who died that they may draw comfort from their faith and the support of the community." Cliff Minett, who lost two of his three children in the disaster, said: "It doesn't matter if it's one year or 40 years on - the pain is just the same." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6072202.stm

~Lost~Season 2 & 3 ~SPOILERS INSIDE!~
It was a pretty cool episode. Charlie was on top sarcastic form; Hurley was ace; was absolutely delighted by Locke's silence which he could have stayed that way longer; intrgiued that we got to hear two of the random background survivors called by name (are we gonna get to know some more of them?); and was kind of intrigued with some of the shots of Desmond, almost messianic when he was stood by the beach.

~Lost~Season 2 & 3 ~SPOILERS INSIDE!~
I get the feeling they won't have chosen not to show it. They'll likely lose some prime advertising money off the back of it. Unfortunately, they were probably only able to buy the first two series. When the bidding war came around for series 3 & 4, Sky will have put more money than anyone else can afford into it because they've seen how popular it is. I don't blame channel 4, more the greedy numbskulls at Sky.

but is he really the good guy? if thats the case, why have the Others been openly attacking the survivors. why not just introduce yourselves, and help out the stranded people. why all the cages, locked rooms, observation and all the rest?- Rate the latest movie you've seen
I think its definitely one of those films where you love it or hate it, and I don't think there really is any middle ground.- Rate the latest movie you've seen
World Trade Center 10/10 When I first heard about this film, I didn't want to go and see it. I then saw the trailer about 6 times, and it looked like they'd made it really well so when Ian decided he wanted to see it last night, that's the film we got tickets for. In some ways it was what I expected and in others it wasn't. I'd expected to cry because I was getting chills just watching the trailer, but I didn't expect to cry quite so much. And I certainly didn't expect it to be quite so graphic, but it definitely worked.- The Offical Top Gear Thread

He did do the latter. The beeb pundity people spent half the time talking about how disgraceful it was, and how he'd detracted from the result. If that's the case, why talk about it to that length? DOn't give him the attention he's craving.- American Christian fanatics want Harry Potter banned!!
They ban the weirdest of things. When I was in primary school, we used to be able to buy books through the Puffin book club. One year, we were banned from buying the "Demon Headmaster" by Gillian Cross and anyone who bought it outside school wasn't allowed to bring it to school with them. I still don't understand exactly why. We didn't like the headmaster but even at that age I think we would have realised that he wasn't some megolamaniac set on world domination. Or maybe he was.......- Uk Peeps: Lost Series 2 start 2/5/06 10pm C4!!!
I am actually in a blissful state right now. For the next 7 days (I think) I can quite happily google Lost features and not have to worry about spoilers because season 2 has finished here and season 3 hasn't started yet over the pond.- American Christian fanatics want Harry Potter banned!!
the publicity machine is cranking into action then? not seen any of the ban Harry articles for a while, so it can only mean one thing - there'll be news of the 7th book sometime soon.- Rate the latest movie you've seen
Croupier 7/10- Lost star traffic charges dropped
Charges have been dropped against Lost actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje over his arrest on suspicion of driving without a licence and disobeying police. The lawyer for the 39-year-old Briton proved that his client had a licence. The actor spent more than six hours in jail following his arrest earlier this month in Hawaii, where Lost is filmed. Co-stars Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros both pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol, following arrests last December. Watros had her licence suspended for 90 days together with a $312 (£165) fine. She was also ordered to undergo alcohol assessment and counselling. Rodriguez, who had a previous drunken-driving conviction in Los Angeles and two speeding tickets in Honolulu, was sentenced to five days in jail. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5386010.stm- Five become four for pop comeback
Chart-topping boy band Five have announced a comeback five years after they split. The line-up will be just four - Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson, Abs Breen and Jason "J" Brown - with former bandmate Sean Conlon focusing on a solo career. Robinson said that would not prompt a name change, adding: "Five's a brand not a number." The group, who sold 20 million records worldwide between 1997 and 2001, are working on a new self-funded album. The record is a collaboration with Robbie Williams' former song writing partner Guy Chambers. "I just hope everybody is going to want to hear our stuff and see what we are doing now," Brown told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat. "Five years later it's going to be a little bit different - not kind of arms in the air - but we are still a full-on pop band, and we are really looking forward to it." 'Bigger than ever' Five had 11 top 10 singles in the UK, including the number ones Keep On Movin', We Will Rock You and Let's Dance. Neville said: "We're not clutching at straws. We don't need the money. We're going to be back bigger than ever." "We're just coming back because why shouldn't we have another crack at the madness?" Brown added. Five's members were hand-picked from 3,000 hopefuls at an audition set up by the creators of the Spice Girls. They announced their split in 2001 live on music channel MTV, saying they could "no longer do justice" to their fans or to each other. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5385764.stm - Rate the latest movie you've seen
