The 10th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes due Mon., Aug. 8 @ 5 pm CST (GMT -6))
Here's my review :D I'm sorry I had to rush it but I'm working at the moment and it's taking me way more time than what I had planned. Listened to it twice though. 1 – Very quiet piano track. The sadness it conveys would lead me to use it as a final track so the fact you’re starting with this is quite surprising but pleasant nonetheless. 2 – Starts with what sounds like a dialogue from an old movie, keyboard background which flows well with the first track, all this followed by a more dynamic mix. Cool atmosphere, I like it. 3 – Acoustic guitar, very ‘‘airy’’ atmosphere. Reminds me of some young Northern European bands whom I appreciate but wouldn’t listen too much (I find this kind of songs pretty much always the same, and thus start getting bored) 4? – I’m puzzled there’s no track 4… 5 – Would associate this one as well to young bands from Norway/Sweden/Denmark, though this one is more electronic and catchy :) 6 – I feel like entering a very vast and wide space in a video game like Final Fantasy, my character’s lost and saddened and I have to find a way to get him out of this. It’s like a tunnel with an attracting bright light on the other side. The feeling of emptiness created by the song is quite fascinating. Where does it come from? I’m very curious about it, it’s a very interesting track! 7 – Getting slightly rock with electric guitar, but the keyboard make it in keeping with the previous track. Sounds quite 70s, enjoyable! 8 – 30 seconds of bird songs, exotic ones, we’re in the middle of the Amazon forest. This is quite a mysterious tape… 9 – Once again, sounds like a young band trying be retro. I love it, the piano part reminds me of the soundtrack of a movie I love (The Brave One). Wouldn’t be surprised if the title was ‘‘Animals’’ as all songs containing this word (Coldplay, R.E.M, Cranberries) are awesome. 10 – Wuhu finally a female voice, and a good one! Totally loved the 2 first minutes of the song but then the pitch goes higher (not sure I’m using the appropriate English word) and I find it less attractive. Plus the crescendo results on something slightly disharmonic to my ears. 11 – Great contrast with the loud end of Track 10, calm, peaceful electronic track I would easily associate to a Michel Gondry movie (piano, electro plus craziness). I like it. 12 – Quite poppy/indie song, kinda repetitive (‘‘I was poor in love’’) but catchy. There’s something a bit retro at one point too, one of my fav of the mixtape. 13 – Very short track, 30 second, it’s all about atmosphere. Funnily I feel I already entered a similar ‘‘dreamy’’ world during a previous mixtape exchange, have you already been my mixtape maker? 14 – Waking up with another retro beat and a female voice. I would describe them as a soft, quiet and serious version of ‘‘The Ting Tings’’ ahah. 15 – Extremely long instrumental song that goes crescendo. There’s something PinkFloyd-ian in the length of the track and its experimental aspect. 16 – Belle and Sebastian? Definitely reminds me of an old mixtape I was sent… 17 – Soundtrack? I’m curious; where else can you find this kind of instrumental song taking into consideration I don’t think it’s a famous piece of classical music? 18 – Electro. The background noise (synth) makes it weird and kinda hard to listen to, I would have appreciated it much more if they had gotten ridden of this weird sound. 19 – The beginning totally reminds me of a song I was gonna put in my mixtape (Catherine Ringer – Pardon, if you wanna check it on youtube), and then it gets catchy. Good one. 20 – Ending on a quite country soft song. Funnily I would have started the tape with this one. I love this “and I see” repetition. All in all, a very well made mixtape. You can feel you worked on the atmosphere and I like that. Fav tracks are definitely 9, 10, 12 and 20 :) Thanks a lot, mixtape maker!

Dear secret partner, I usually enjoy listening to mixtapes that fit my partner's tastes rather than mines, as it's more interesting for me. So feel free to put whatever you want as far as the tracks flow well together :)

First, like a few of us, I'd like to apologize for taking such a long time to review my tape. I'm usually quicker but I've been quite busy lately plus I started reviewing it and then accidentally closed my browser half way through it so I was too lazy to restart everything right away hehe… 1- Funny introduction. Sounds highly like the soundtrack of a movie. A good way to wake me up and announce ''now get ready for a crazy mixtape'' ahah 2- A very Empire of the Sun-ish track though it's a little more retro and the voice is that of a woman (which makes me like it more than Empire of the Sun). I like it, plus it's ultra catchy. I love the quiet ''drum'' part a 1:15, I'll definitely keep this song in my head for a while. ''ee-yeah ee-yeah ee-yeah ee-yeah'' :D 3- Simple beat, goes lighter as the track begins with the keyboard. Female voice again. I like the lyrics also I'm very sorry to confess the music reminds me of the opening of the French cartoon of ''Sonic the Edgehog''. Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I can prove it, and it prevents me from enjoying this track ahah. However, there's something a bit Florence & The Machine-ish in her ''ooh-OOh-ooh-ooh'' at the end, which is quite pleasant. 4- Gorillaz - Dare. One of my friend here being a huge Damon Albarn fan I thought I knew who you were when I first listened to the tape, though the other songs do not fit this person's taste ahah :D Anyway I actually like this track even if I'm not too much into Mr Albarn's work so... nice to here it again. Fits well with the mixtape (and this spring weather hehe), getting electronic & lighter... This track sums up quite well the spirit of the tape imo: you just DARE hehe. Also, is that a remix? Cause my player keeps on cutting the song, I don't know if it's normal or not... 5- Still this electronic beat, your mixtape is very coherent. I'm not fond of this track as it gets a slightly bit too ''nightclub'' at one point (too many repetitions). 6- Still electronic track starting with catchy beats. I prefer this one, plus there's guitar. It's more Gorillaz-ish, very pleasant, instrumental. I loved the crescendo-like end of the track. 7- Powerful beat. Very entertaining instrumental & electronic track (again). I got scared it’d became boring when I realised it’d be mainly electronic tracks but I was very stupid to think so, at least it keeps you awake and it’s sometimes quite cool, like this track. 8- Again, same kind of track, I even found myself taping the beat. 9- Voices are back, distorted. I don’t like this one too much, a bit Linkin Park-ish. It’s more rock though, and I like that. The title’s probably ‘‘change has come’’ ahah. Totally reminds me of the only Prodigy track I know actually. 10- Guitar!!! It’s rock & electro, instrumental, again I think that could be Prodigy-ishas well. I enjoyed this one, the ‘‘clapping part’’ is very catchy. 11- Enjoyed the beginning again, it gets more and more rock towards the end of your tape. That’s the kind of rock from the USA I usually dislike and don’t listen to, but I must confess I don’t know it that much so I’m discovering... I guess it’s bands like Slipknot / Nine Inch Nails, they’re all a bit too hard or punk for me. Anyway that’s not a bad track. 12- The voice surprised me in a mixtape centred on electric which evolves towards rock. It’s softer, there’s something ‘poppy’ in it which appears for the first time in the tape. I’m not too into this voice… 13- Trumpets (?) at the beginning, turns a bit ‘jazzy’ & still electronic, softer end of the mixtape. It’s totally ‘‘ambient track’’, lyrics are pretty simple and the first line sums up the spirit of the track: ‘’we found the paradise in the flower’s bloom’’. 14- The beginning of the track brings me back to nightclubs (ok I never go to nightclub but that’s the music I imagine being played over there). I’m not into it and the catchy ‘‘chorus’’ (can we call that a chorus? ‘‘ooh, ah, ooh-ah’’) confirms it’s not the kind of song I can enjoy. 15- I thought it’d be a remix of Chasing Cars at first, but it’s not. Keyboard, sounds quite old fashioned in a way so it must be from an old band trying to reproduce it’s original sound or something like that. Anyway, to sum up the song: synthesizer ahah. 16- Last track appears very solemn, great way to close a mixtape, even moving at one point. Must come from a soundtrack? I like it a lot! Starting a mixtape with instrumental tracks is something I like doing a lot as well, so I think that’s a pretty good choice. Overall I think that mixtape was very well done. There’s a logical evolution throughout the tape, everything flows quite well (except maybe from 2 surprising tracks towards the end which were softer than the rest of the songs). I like discovering new style of music I usually do not listen to – and that’s why I do not give the link to my lastfm account – so this mixtape is quite satisfying in this way. Even if I disliked some songs, I think it was a pretty good work and really enjoyed broadening my knowledge of music styles. Thank you!

The 7th Mixtape Exchange (1ST POST UPDATE)
Thank you for the explanation Since the mixtape had a specific title, I thought there surely is a specific meaning behind it and the songs it contains! And sorry to read you're strongly disappointed by an artist you love I hope it will get better with the time! I'm sure it will, thanks :) Maybe it's also because I use a PC and Windows Media Player to listen to the tracks!?! That might have been the reason indeed as I believe the WMP often uses the internet to retag mp3s. Hey: My fav album (pop rock) is ''[sic!]'' (title of the track & the album) - 2001. They started with a now ultra famous one called ''Fire'' where you can find their most appreciated songs (Zazdrość, Teksański, Moja i Twoja Nadzieja) but you have to know they used to be kind of Hard Rock at this time. Nowadays they turned to something quite electro/pop/rock and soft. They're a 20 yr-old bands so this explains why hehe. Since you mentioned Tété , I discovered Asa thanks to him! I haven’t listen to her new record yet! I actually don't know Tété this much just the ''posté devant la fenetre...'' song ahah Waouh, I wouldn’t have thought of this band! The English of Catherine is excellent and indeed the mood is not so Rita Mitsouko! I will check out this album, it’s quite intriguing me now! Plus working with a member of SOAD, maybe Serj Tankian (I should check it out), makes it even more interesting! That's Tankian indeed! He's singing on the track called Terminal Beauty I believe. Why? Do The Cranberries not exist anymore? I thought there were on tour not so long ago? They do, they do. They split in 2003 but decided to come back last year so they all had time to develop solo projects in between. That’s what I thought too but I didn’t mentioned it in first place in order not to hurt the mixtape maker’s feelings in case he/she liked the Italian guy! Ahah not all, and feel free to hurt my feelings :D Finally I’m not so good at recognizing voices! I think it’s because my memory only memorized the high voice and not the low voice of Axl Rose! I only know a couple of Guns N'Roses songs! But I’m glad it made you laugh and I’m sorry you had a bad dream because of that! I will not do this again, promise Oh I actually heard a wonderful duet version of the song in my dreams so it was not that bad, quite pleasant as a matter of fact:D

The 7th Mixtape Exchange (1ST POST UPDATE)
Salut, je suis ta secret partner :D Glad you liked it, although you have to know it was pretty hard making a mixtape for you as I'm french too and I discovered via your lastfm account that we both listen to the same kind of music. I thus decided I wouldn't care putting foreign artists so that you hear unknown things, plus I saw you knew Kaizer Orchestra or German bands so I guessed you wouldn't mind that much hearing foreign languages. As for the general feeling of the tape (connected with the title), it was actually made to convey a specific message I wasn't expecting you to get, so I'm surprised and pleased you're asking about it (I wouldn't talk about it otherwise) :) Actually it's all about being disappointed by someone you love, and you actually even spotted the person who was concerned by the message (which, once again, I wasn't expecting you to recognize): Dolores O'Riordan. I'm actually a huge fan and for some reason I'm kind of blaming her lately... Anyway that's why a Cranberries song is introduced toward the beginning of the tape, in order to set things, and it closes with the duet with the italian guy (lyrics: ''tell me how am I supposed to live with you'' and then ''get out of my head / stop hurting me'') followed by the Axl Rose song whose lyrics totally describe my feelings towards Mrs O'Riordan. So well, that's about it... the cover of the album is made with a real cover, that of the very first Cranberries EP (see it HERE) which I modified a bit (some people here know that I like making crazy covers :D), and it contains a song called ''Pathetic Senses'' (lyrics HERE). :) That's it... Now track by track: Voilà voilà, ravie que tu aies aimé en tout cas ;) Camille ********** http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LTKI99YR Tracklist: 01 - Time - Pink Floyd (Dark Side Of The Moon) 02 - Two By Two - Animal Kingdom (Signs And Wonders) 03 - [sic!] - Hey ([sic!]) 04 - Hollywood - The Cranberries (To The Faithful Departed) 05 - Kasou - Ray (L'Arc-En-Ciel) 06 - Preacher Man - Asa (Beautiful Imperfection) 07 - Badluck Queen - Variéty (Les Rita Mitsouko) 08 - Breathe - Arkitekt (The Black Hair EP) 09 - Ma Petite Entreprise - Alain Bashung (Chatterton) 10 - W Sam Raz - Czesław Śpiewa (Pop) 11 - All The Rights Friends - R.E.M. (In Time) 12 - Senza Fiato - Negramaro feat. Dolores O'Riordan (La Finestra) 13 - This I Love - Guns N' Roses (Chinese Democracy) 14 - Death Is A Road To Awe - Clint Mansell, Kronos Quartet (The Foutain OST)

The 7th Mixtape Exchange (1ST POST UPDATE)
Hi hi! Nice to meet you! First I'd like to thank you cause your mixtape perfectly matchs my expectations of this game: it enabled me to discover new artists and different styles of music I wouldn't have listened to otherwise, which is exactly what I'm wishing for when registering to the mixtape game (and which explain why I don't give my lastfm link, cause it's more interesting than listening to something which corresponds to my tastes). I was at first surprised not to hear rock songs but all in all, it's precisely what makes it great. So well, I'm not sure putting less ambient tracks would have been interesting, it's perfect like this. I'm sorry I decided to review it while listening to it for the first time though, maybe I should have done that after the second time and I would have noticed track 5 & 12 were not from the same artist ahah. It's also funny how I first thought you had dug obscure bands, cause it turns out I heard about (and even know) a bunch of them: Belle & Sebastian, Owen Pallett, My Bloody Valentine, The National, Röyksopp...etc although I obviously had never gave them a try. Last but not least, concerning The National: I'M GUTTED! I've been offered to see them live like few weeks ago, and because I didn't have time to check their music I just stayed home... damn it, this track's brilliant, now I wish I had been to the gig... Anyway, be sure I'll give your mixtape a second try cause it's a very interesting one, I might do that when I'll be less tired because of my studies though ahah... christmas breakkkk. Thanks again;)

The 7th Mixtape Exchange (1ST POST UPDATE)
Hi secret partner, here I am Track 1. Slow and ''airy'' beginning of the mixtape. I like that, sets up the thing. Good one to open. Track 2. (ok right I realised after listening to 3 songs that my player wasn't playing them in the right order so I went back to the real Track 2, it flows way better now) Electro, calm still there's an increasing dynamism in the track. Nice one, could be a mix of a video game music and a Jon Brion track ahah. The ''light'' feminine voice is not that of a singer I would appreciate but it's sweet. Track 3. Let's welcome chords in the mixtape, yiha! Still a crazy ''dreamy'' track. I guess the whole mixtape will be made of these electro/atmospheric songs... could all come from the same album, so congrats for being that ''coherent'', it really flows well. Although as it's not the kind of stuff I'm used to, I'm afraid of getting a little bored. This one's not bad though, especially with the kind of ''tension'' which is built throughout the track. Track 4. Funny one, conveys a feeling of strange ''lightness''. Dunno... I feel like playing in the snow ahah. Once again I wouldn't listen to it for a too long time but once a while it's... fun(?) By the way I really dislike that guy's voice on the ''I'm never gonna give it to you'' ahah. Track 5. Ahhhh goodbye electro. Me like, me like! The beginning of the song is totally lovely, the voice is quite interesting. Very good one! My fav so far, the lyrics are awesome too. It's a kind of modern Bob Dylan ahah... Track 6. Getting solemn: very soft and sad piano track, no lyrics. That's beautiful. Track 7. Very promising beginning with original sounds of... triangles and bells or whatever? That one is quite cool, a bit Amelie-ish if you know this French movie? Me like it! Track 8. I'm not good at associating songs to a specific style of music but I'd say this one is like... ''poppy''... but it remains sweet. I don't want to sound rude but I'm finding it almost narcotic. The Keyboard part around 3:00 highly reminds me of a song I like though ahah. The end is quite pleasant with all the voices singing at the same time. Overall the song sounds quite old-fashioned to me. Track 9. Good preview of the music dead people listen in heaven :D Track 10. Back to airy and electronic music. Sounds a bit retro though, not the kind of thing I would listen to usually as it is a bit too repetitive, I think that might drive the listener crazy after a while ahah. Track 11. I like the beat of this one, and the effect on the voice is quite pleasant, I just wish it was slightly more dynamic. Reminds me of a telepopmusik track which I like. Track 12. Isn't it the same band/singer than Track 5? Liked it from the first seconds. I really wanna know who's that guy. Once again, I like it. Track 13. Beautiful. Starting with a violin, once again it's quite solemn but very touching. Track 14. Tags weren't deleted so I could see it was Sigur Ros. I know them but I never gave them a try so it's done now. I like the percussions but this ''airy'' voice is too... ''angelic'' for me ahah. Track 15. Slower than the precedent song (if possible), good way of closing the mixtape, especially as it's kind of never-ending :P So well, even if it's not the kind of music I enjoy listening, I admire the work done on this mixtape. It was a cohesive one made to fit to a special atmosphere which probably corresponds to a universe my mixtape maker like to explore. Quite touching. It'd give it a 7/10. I hope my comments do not seem too offensive, I tried to be objective but do not worry, I was really happy and enjoyed listening to these tracks. I'm looking forward to discover the tracklist, especially cause I want to hear more stuff from the artist of track 5 and 12. Thanks a lot :)

Same here. I usually work a lot on flow though I'm not satisfied with mine this time... oh well... doesn't matter, I tried my best, I'll blame my current mood for putting the songs I chose in my mixtape.

The 6th Mixtape Exchange (closed for entries)
Hello, I'm Camille :D No problem about the delay. First I'd like to thank you cause I enjoyed reading your review and I'm glad you took time to appreciate the mixtape. I'm also glad I've been paired with a girl this time (sorry William hehe) cause it's rare to find people who enjoy female voices as much as I do on a Coldplay board. So yeah... I was happy to get you, especially when I had a look at your lastfm page. Sure, that's The Island's OST but this track has since been used in many trailers like Elizabeth: The Golden Age (awesome trailer btw). Thanks a lot for noticing this. I do always pay much attention to the transition between songs cause I want the songs to flow perfectly all through the tape. I'm happy I enabled you to discover Clarion Call from Delphic then. Great, I discovered this song (Home from Animal Kingdom) via the last mixtape exchange, I believe it's was Tauiwi's tape to Sofia, right? Well, I didn't find Eels on your lastfm but I wouldn't be surprised if you knew them indeed. This song is Not Ready Yet, I love this mood too. Actually the only thing I was 100% sure about before starting the mixtape was that I would use this song to introduce the following one which is... HOW (yes, that's the title, now you get the ''pun'') from The Cranberries. Basically, The Cranberries are my very fav band ever, and How one of the track I like the most from them (1993, getting a bit old, isn't it?). Since you like female voice, I encourage you to check them on youtube (though you might already know their most famous hits like Zombie, Ode To My Family or Just My Imagination) because Dolores O'Riordan has the most beautiful voice ever (propaganda :D). Heart of the mixtape ;) Ahah yeah sorry, actually my goal was to introduce you to foreign bands though I know it's hard to appreciate something you can't understand, so I chose this song from Les Rita Mitsouko (feat. the Sparks) cause they were singing in English. They're French ( and I am, so it's like my ''I'm prouf of my country'' part of the mixtape :D) and they're kinda the pioneer of an alternative (punk) rock music in France; they're quite a legend for me. Once again, maybe you could check their most famous songs like Marcia Baila (biggest success, deals with cancer which was like very impressive back in the 80s), Andy or C'est comme ça. I'm verry sorry about that. I also wanted to give you a preview of my personality and my tastes so I needed to put some Gossip in there, though I thought it'd be boring cause they're getting a bit too popular. Choosing this Simian Mobile Disco song which features Beth Ditto (Gossip's singer) was thus my way of putting a ''Beth's touch'' in here. I'm sorry you're not into her voice, but fair enough, I can understand that and this track is not that brilliant indeed ;) Ahah I saw on your lastfm you knew a few Garbage tracks so I was afraid you'd recognize this one (Push It), my fav from them. Good it sounded new to you! I'm afraid I can't answer your technical questions, I suck at this :D Actually I'm trying to learn Polish so I wanted to include some of my fav Polish bands in there, but once again I had to put something which was sung in English not to loose you. Glad you liked it, maybe you can listen to W Sam Raz from the same band (Czesław Śpiewa) ;) That's Kaizers Orchestra, a Norwegian band, I believe. As I don't understand the lyrics either, I thought you wouldn't mind listening to something you couldn't understand this time, cause it's all a matter of music and I do like this track a lot. Touched from VAST. I don't know this band that much but I once heard this track and felt in love with it. I believe I tried more songs from this band once, but they were a bit too dark for me so... I'll stick to this one :P Familiar indeed, that's the very famous Peter Gabriel (who used to be the lead singer of Genesis). His last album is only made of covers and I thought this one was brilliant so... here it is, awesome lyrics indeed. Oops, sorry again. That's another legend, Sinead O'Connor's Troy. I wasn't too sure about putting that on the mixtape but I find it ultra moving (if you don't mind hearing that again, I'd suggest this breathtaking live version: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-kd5QO8fyE]YouTube- Sinéad O'Connor - Troy (Live)[/ame] ) and I thought you could enjoy it. Anyway, must have seem a bit long too you then, sorry. AHHH YEAH ME. I'm so verry happy cause I knew you loved Florence and I checked every single song of Florence you knew and I noticed you didn't have the collector versions of her album so I decided to include one of the tracks you hadn't scrobbled on lastfm. Right choice, yipee! Enjoy it that's the Bird Song! I love Flo :D Nowhere actually :D That's a brand new and unknown band who were opening for the Cranberries during their European tour these last two months, and as I saw the Crans like 12 times, I got used to hear Outside Royalty. This track is called Voice Beneath The Rubble ;) Yeah me again:cool: I love to end my mixtapes with impressive oldies, and when I saw you liked Dylan and Janis I hesitated a bit but that track was just perfect to close such a mixtape. This is Kozmic Blues, my fav track from her. That was a special touch for you ;) So, thanks for listening and enjoying it, hope I didn't bore you too much. By the way I made the cover by myself which includes the eye from Eels' cover and a cover of The Cranberries ;) Here is my tracklist: x - Name of the song - Artist (Album) 01 – My Name Is Lincoln – Steve Jablonsky (The Island OST) 02 – Clarion Call – Delphic (Acolyte) 03 – Home – Animal Kingdom (Signs And Wonders) 04 – Not Ready Yet – Eels (Beautiful Freak) 05 – How – The Cranberries (Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can’t We?) 06 – Singing In The Shower – Les Rita Mitsouko (Marc & Robert) 07 – Cruel Intentions – Simian Mobile Disco feat. Beth Ditto (Temporary Pleasure) 08 – Push It – Garbage (Version 2.0) 09 – Pożegnanie Małego Wojownika - Czesław Śpiewa (Pop) 10 – Di Grind – Kaizers Orchestra (Evig Pint) 11 – Touched – Vast (Visual Audio Sensory Theater) 12 – Listening Wind (Talking Heads) – Peter Gabriel (Scratch My Back) 13 – Troy – Sinéad O'Connor (The Lion And The Cobra) 14 – Bird Song (Intro) – Florence + The Machine (Lungs) 15 – Bird Song – Florence + The Machine (Lungs) 16 – Voice Beneath The Rubble – Outside Royalty (All Nights Out) 17 – Kozmic Blues – Janis Joplin (I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again, Mama) Link to dl: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=U4N5KVYI

Rodolph & Robert - the topic for those who speak milleuze
:) Hello
