  1. yes this type of criticism, “simple, memorable melody line and ramming it home through endless repetition" may seem old to you coldplay fans, it certainly is not lame because it gets to the heart of coldplay's inability to write good songs. they've basically stuck to the same pattern through all 4 albums while changing the sonics after parachutes and x&y. if coldplay was good at writing and arranging songs they wouldn't receive such mundane repetitive criticism. no ones trying to be an asshole either they're just simply stating their opinion, after all isnt that the point of this forum. good one
  2. to the moron who says kid a is grey compared to viva la vida...get your head out of your ass. kid a may just be the greatest record recorded so far this century (granted it has only been 8 years) second of all has anyone in here thought of thinking for themselves before? everyone is entitled to their opinions and certainly a forum like this would seem like the proper place where those opinions can be expressed in hopes of creating a quality debate. but...oops sorry i forgot you cant bash anything coldplay does without being a moron. this whole place is just a big lovefest for coldplay, which is partly understandable because after all this is a coldplay place. what isn't understandable is that coldplay could make an album of farts and you guys would love it. my point is that no one has anything to say to the criticism, no great points have arisen to build a solid argument against the critics, unless you're counting this "i hate reviewers they're dumb..."i'm not reading reviews anymore". please.
  3. oh please...rip on the critics. This album is nothing but average and thats how they scored it. it's typical coldplay with an eno twist get over yourselves. and yes i've listened to it with a good pair of head phones. and no its nowhere near the boxer or neon bible. not to mention kid is isnt dull. maybe you guys should consider the fact that everyone here is extremely bias, and would love anything that this band made. get over yourselves this album is nothing special.
  4. parachutes is the only good album they made and the only album coldplay has made that actually sounds like it wasn't contrived. a lot of you guys will probably disagree but coldplay's last three albums relied heavily on production and to me that makes the songs weaker. If you rely heavily on the producer to make your music you got problems. If you can enter the studio with well written music and ideas then it becomes the producers job to shape that sound through engineering, recording, and editing. This observation I have about coldplay's weak song-writing is definitely reflected in what i perceive to be one of the worst live shows I've seen (they rely on backing tracks because they dont have the musical capacity to reflect what the create in the studio onto the stage). Also, where is all the experimentation that you guys speak of? I dont hear it, same old same old out of coldplay, just a different sound because of Eno's skills. This album is more or less x&y with a different producer thats all. And of course none of this reflects my opinion of Mr. Eno, who is certainly a master.
  5. just like no with with a y chromosome listens to coldplay. they're about as bad as john mayer now. sure the guy can shred on guitar, but only sells music because he admittedly knows how to appeal to screaming, wanna be groupie, fan girls.
  6. haha you shouldnt even have to be skeptical coldplay isnt even close to the modern day beatles theres only one band who may claim that distinction and i think everyone knows who that is
  7. all i can do is laugh at everyone who said that the live performance of viva la vida would be much different than the one at the mtv movie awards. Hmmm....well the backing track was still there and they still are not that great in the live setting (dont misquote me becuase the album has the potential and i have yet to even write it off, mostly because of brian eno). whats next though? another tour of the same set list every night with like one variation once they switch continents? haha have fun pissing your money away on this rubbish. when will you guys wake up to this? their live show is disgraceful.
  8. i dont have high standards for coldplay after seeing them live a couple of times. this is pretty standard coldplay...backing tracks and all. not to mention guy stated today on the blog that the confetti was theirs...hmmm so much for mtv's control over the performance. coldplay live is certainly not worthy of the high price tag and the AWFUL sounding arenas they play, not to mention they dont sound so hot themselves.
  9. thats my problem though, i've seen them live and being in an arena certainly did not stop them from using a backing band. now dare i ask how its possible for andrew bird to layer songs in his live concerts playing numerous parts on his own (practically creating new versions of his songs every night) whether or not he's with martin dosh. check it out on you tube if you've never seen the man live. numerous other bands (i cited radiohead in a previous post, reckoner as a specific example of a song with strings) find a way to either re-create a song so that its playable by all members in the live setting, or provide a backing band worthy of fulfilling everything a given song needs. i dont think anyone can answer why coldplay consistently relies on backing tracks in the live setting, which says a lot about the musicianship of the members of coldplay.
  10. the criticism comes from their inability to play this song or craft a live version suitable for four people instead of using some backing track, while two of them looked useless (johnny on the guitar was just an embarrassment, not to mention chris' voice), while will banged on a drum. i am fully aware that the mtv thing is show, but coldplay should be about the music and not putting on a show. i've seen them live and its not just this song, several songs they play require backing tracks such as square one. its rather disheartening that "the greatest band in the world" can't even play all the required parts of a song that they wrote, mold it into a song suitable for four in the live setting, or even scout some other people to help them out. take radiohead for example and one of their songs that has strings, reckoner, and look how they were able to mold it in the live setting WITHOUT a BACKING TRACK. pardon me but what coldplay does in the live setting is borderline despicable.
  11. NIN probably has a man on stage manning the laptop and controlling the sounds/noises it make most likely by using some form of a midi controller. coldplay probably have a guy offstage queuing the backing track at the start of the song and their musicianship suffers severely from it. a poor performance, and i've seen it live before and that is as equally mediocre.
  12. when is coldplay gonna give up the backing tracks? maybe when/if that day every comes ill go see them sorry for all you coldplay lovers but their live show is just mediocre. more glamour than music
  13. beatles bright eyes (why are you voting if you dont know these bands? conor writes way better songs than that sellout gibbard. for those of you who have seen bright eyes you'll know that conor brings that same emotion from his records to the live setting and its powerful.) Sigur Rós (shouldnt even be close) Radiohead
  14. if i wasnt such a big coldplay fan i probably wouldnt have a problem. every chance i have to see them, im going to go or at least try my best to go, but i just wish they wouldnt play the same thing every time i see them as hippocritical as that is, i just feel a bit slighted thats all.
  15. it doesnt make sense to pay 90 dollars a night to see the same 'show' twice like i did when they came to chicago or in the area. I think thats bogus and i feel that the band is ripping off its fans and could do way better considering money really isnt an issue for them. Live music isn't about putting on a 'show' its about the music, thats why its called a concert. It shouldnt be some planned out act that never changes, if i wanted that i would go see a play on broadway. Im not saying dont spend money to see them, i just think there is a whole lot more that could be done on their part instead of putting on the same show every signle night. To me there really is no justification to seeing them more than once because once you have seen one show, then you've seen them all. It's music not a play and i dont care what the stones, u2 or anyone else does because a certain band called radiohead, who acctually went on a stadium/ampitheatre tour in 2003 following the release of hail to the theif, didnt play the same setlist every single night.. Radiohead could just as easily sell out these types of venues yet they choose to play theatres every night. In my opinion coldplay has some work to do and paying 90 dollars in America to see the same thing more than once and then sitting back and saying that you are happy with it to me is a bit crazy.
