With the Nikon series cameras, which I am purchasing, you can actually place the camera in front of the bird feeder on a tripod, and shoot the pictures using a remote.

Pigeons are pests, along with House Sparrows. Most large birds are shy around populated areas, I think. I used to see an Egret by my house in a local pond all the time early in the morning, but not really anymore.
