[19-Dec-2010] Crisis: Coldplay in Liverpool (ROYAL COURT THEATRE, 1 ROE ST, L1 1HL)
I know I'm a bit late but... What a fantastic gig that was - I'd forgotten how good a show Coldplay put on. They thrived off the energy of the small venue and it felt as though I was really part of the concert and not simply watching them. For those people that tell me Coldplay are slow and boring, this show proved otherwise - it was lively, full of hits and packed with energy. I didn't think it was possible to get so into Fix You that you could smash a microphone stand! Highlights: Shiver - what a beautiful song - I've been singing it to myself ever since the gig. I can't believe that it has been out of the set for so long. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face - packed full of energy. Jonny and Will were really going for it by the last instrumental part. I don't know how Will managed to stay on his stool with the way he was jerking about banging the drums as hard as he was. Chris signing my ticket after the show - I came out of the pub, saw a large group of people waiting at the stage door so I joined them and within 5 minutes there was the Chris Martin. No-one's commented so far that once he got into his car it sped off and jumped through a red light... Lowlights: The number of obvious mistakes that were made in most songs. One or two I'd forgive but for so many to occur, especially in songs they've been playing professionally for up to ten years, was disappointing. Politik, for example, lost its atmosphere when Chris descended into cursing under the sun at forgetting the words. The set was far too short; it felt like it had ended no sooner than it had started. Songs like Speed of Sound, Talk, Lovers In Japan, 42 all seem to be popular yet were not included. The only song that was played that I would have taken out was Cemeteries of London.

[19-Dec-2010] Crisis: Coldplay in Liverpool (ROYAL COURT THEATRE, 1 ROE ST, L1 1HL)
I'm surprised how early the text message came through. I was expecting to be sat at the computer all night waiting for an email message to arrive. I'm a little concerned about the weather but looking at the BBC forecast for Liverpool, it looks to be just cold and icy, but no snow. Touching wood, there's no problems with my train line (Nottingham, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool) but we all know how quickly it can change. I already missed one show because of the bad weather, I'll be damned if I miss a second!

That didn't stay hidden for long! On the positive, it's on the exact same street as that hostel is where I've booked into.

At the moment the highest auction bid is £525 and VIP £1000. That's more than doubled within the last hour when I checked. Come seven days time they must surely be well past the £2500 mark. On Ebay there's already someone selling their two seated tickets for this show. Only £1871.26 at the moment. Who has that sort of money to spare?!

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to plug - for those wanting cheap accommodation in Liverpool, the Hatters Hostel appears to be the cheapest at £18.80 for the one night of the 19th. Accessible 24hrs and comes with a light breakfast. It's also directly in the city centre. Be aware that it's a hostel (not a hotel) and I presume you'll be sharing a room with some total strangers, that is unless you book a private room.

You're right it is 24 hours. I must have misread it. That solves that problem then.

[19-Dec-2010] Crisis: Coldplay in Liverpool (ROYAL COURT THEATRE, 1 ROE ST, L1 1HL)
I managed to get a seated ticket for the Liverpool concert :) Interestingly the site came online at 1358 - so mine was fully bought before they were even meant to go on sale. Does anyone have any ideas how are we going to be notified of the venue? I read that it's not being released until an hour before the show, so I'll already be up in Liverpool (ie away from an internet connection so emailing would be no good)

Viva la vida acoustic/piano version
Nothing! I'm sure live Chris just plays that with his left hand and then that goes on a loop for almost the entire song whilst he jumps around the stage, with Johnny using a keyboard to add the violin effects. If you wanted to do a piano version then you'd keep going with those chords in you're left hand and I suppose you could just play the top note from each chord in the right. No they're just the individual notes. So for the first one you'd just play the note Db and the note Ab together.

Viva la vida acoustic/piano version
Almost the same as in the PVG book. That has the chord progression in the left hand as: Db, Ab Eb, Bb, Db Ab, C F, Ab, C The C is Middle C. All the chords are written with the lowest note first.

Will Champion is a drummer, what's his best drumming?
42 Life In Technicolor Square One Fix You In My Place Everything's Not Lost - one of the first beats I learned to play. Lost - Just a shame the rest of the song is awful. Now that's an underated song. One of their few works with three beats in a bar, and also one of the few songs I don't think has ever been played live.

Coldplay's use of Backing Tracks: good or bad?
I don't mind if it's the odd extra instrument they are playing as a backing track but I'd rather they do it all themselves live or have other people in the wings playing it live. It's not quite as authentic if they are just playing over a backing track. I notice that loops are used a lot in this tour, particularly to allow Chris to jump around and not be stuck behind the piano. Still, we never hear what these songs sound like without all the extra MIDI sounds being played. It might turn out that without these backing sounds the songs sound rubbish, so if that was the case then the backing tracks are a good thing.

According to the Coldplay PVG book (bought from musicroom.com): Intro RH - C,E,G,Bb and C,F,Ab LH - C and F Verse RH - Bb,E,G and Bb,C,F LH - C and F Chorus RH - Bb,E,G and Ab,C,F LH - C and F The Right Hand C is Middle C. I don't know how to play the additional ending bit which the original poster wanted but I guess it will be built around F Minor, given that is the key of the piece. Hope this helps

Hopefully this will be a less controversial answer! There are major and minor keys which music can be written in. Put simply, major are happy sounding, minor are sad sounding. Off the top of my head Life In Technicolor is in A Major whilst Politik is in F Minor. As an aside, the piano tune played after Politik on this tour (Gnossienne No1) is also in the same key as Politik and that's why they both fit together.

I think that's fair enough. Looking back I've interpreted your posts as being in the tiered seating not floor seating. I'd have been surprised if floor seating actually remained seated given that it was quite a lively set and Chris was encouraging people right from the start to stand up, sing-a-long, clap and cheer. From what I could see from the shows all the floor seated stood up as did the 100 hundred blocks with half of the 200s. I'll be damned if they remove Politik from the set! That was my favourite song of the set and sent shivers right the way through me. It was worth the ticket price alone.

Fair enough we're all entitled to our opinion! True I've never stood up at a Coldplay concert before because I've only had the opportunity to go to the Sheffield and Manchester shows this time round. However, I would never dream of choosing standing anyway (unless it is standing only) because I'm too short to see anything. As I say I think you can have a great time and make a right atmosphere sat down watching the show, singing and clapping along. However I will admit that loads of people sat around me were literally just sat there, doing nothing and seemed surprised/unsure of some of the songs - Green Eyes, Politik, Death Will Never Conquer, The Hardest Part - which is bound to make a poor atmosphere as Chris has frequently picked up on.

Nice to see an addition to the set with Jingle Bells, although surely they could have fitted Death Will Never Conquer in as well (it's only 1min30secs long) I see this standing thing has been raised again. As I've mentioned before I'll stand if others are, but if everyone remains seated then so shall I - I'm not going to ruin the view for everyone else by standing up. I (and the vast majority) have come for the music and to see the band perform it, which can be done either standing or seated. In Manchester, for example, Chris requested we stand up so it seems fair enough to stand. People have been grumbling about waving of flags. To be honest, I'm glad they aren't allowed as it just blocks everyone's view and you can't possibly see round them. There is nothing worse than having a stupid flag in your way. At least with a person you can move your head around. Tiered seating in particular is better because there is around a foot between each level so you can see above the person in front. I think people are forgetting Coldplay are a soft rock band. Most people find them rather slow and unenergetic (at least until they've seen them live) and even still I'd find it hard to do any dancing to most of the songs. They are hardly the Kaiser Chiefs or The Killers, so I don't think people expect others to be up dancing, hence the all seated. There can be a great atmosphere with singing, clapping, cheering etc. without the need for ruining things for others.

More often than not people stand because those in front of them have stood and they can't see. There are of course exceptions, like this time - the only thing you could have done is asked if they would mind sitting down. Personally I'll stand up if others around me are and even then it is only to see and have a good time, not to detriment the view of those behind. The only positive with me standing up is that I'm only 5ft3 so chances are I won't block many peoples view anyway.

Here are two low quality images I took on my phone. I like to think of my seat as the place you'd set up a television camera for a distant wide shot of the stage. The Yellow Balls make a reappearance Lasers in Clocks Just to add that there were quite a few Manchester references last night. There was something along the lines of 'tell me you're in Manchester' in Politik, 'come up to Manchester' in The Scientist and there was another lyric change which I can't quite remember.

There are two keyboards opposite each other - one for Chris the other for Jonny. Jonny uses his during Viva La Vida. Basically Chris plays the 'dum dum dum der dum dum der dum dum' part at first, which loops, then the violin part you can hear on the CD is done by Jonny. Chris then uses his keyboard again after the first chorus for the little instrumental interlude. I can't quite remember now but I'm sure Jonny moves onto guitar by the end of the song.

This is the view I had of the gig - quite a while since I've had a seat in the rafters. This taken at the end as everyone is leaving. And In The End...

You had the fun of trying to get away from the MEN by car. I took the quicker, easier, cheaper option of getting a tram to Piccadilly then a short bus ride back home. I've got the piano part at the end of The Hardest Part constantly going through my head at the moment.

What a night, I really enjoyed it and glad I was able to get a ticket. That was the set, including the usual Gnossienne No1 after Politik and the Back To Good after The Scientist. Admittedly the crowd were a little slow to get going in terms of standing - the floor appeared to be up at the start and it took a while before the seats got going but by the end most of the 200s, including myself, were up. However, the singing was rather loud and good, with Chris getting the audience to sing bits over and over, particularly the last outro verse in Yellow and the ending of 42. He didn't, like in Sheffield, get the audience to sing the whole of Yellow instead singing the majority himself. Saying all that, Chris appeared to like the noise that everyone was creating (even if it was whilst sat down) and claimed that Manchester is one of the best crowds, were no1 out of 87(?) shows and had brightened up the bands' day. The band themselves had as much energy as ever, Chris not missing an opportunity to leap around, Will banging the life out of his drums and Jonny and Guy moving around as much as they normally do. I was pleased to see the return of the yellow balls during Yellow and was rather amused to see some people carrying them out of the arena at the end. Personal highlights was a chance to see the songs that weren't played at Sheffield - The Hardest Part, Green Eyes, The Scientist (normal version) and Life In Technicolor II. Sadly Politik didn't have the same powerful impact on me this time as it did in Sheffield, where it literally sent shivers up my spine. I would have also preferred having Life In Technicolor II to open and have an extra song instead but not to worry, I enjoyed the set none the less. But judging that I've just drank two pints of orange since I got in 20mins ago and am still sounding hoarse, suggests it was a good night. :)

You're looking about £5 (and at least 30mins of being stuck in queues trying to get out afterwards)

Morning all, I'm new to the forum and thought I'd let you know that I'm off to tonight's show. I saw them for the first time in Sheffield just over a week ago and they were amazing so I thought I'd look on Ebay and try and get a ticket for this one as well, where I've managed to get a genuine one at ticket face value. Hopefully they will stick with the set list they've been using for the past few shows perhaps with a few additions. I'd like to see Yes included or something from X&Y say Low or What If (that'd be quite nice on the B set). A long shot but it would be brilliant if we had Shiver or Everything's Not Lost from Parachutes. Edit: I best get relearning the lyrics for Green Eyes, just in case it crops up again!

VLV TOUR DVD RELEASE!
I'm sure I've read online that they filmed their concert in Chicago for a DVD. I think we are due a DVD of the tour considering that the Toronto gig in 2006 was never officially released.
