It'll help, if you're a bit more specific. What kind of format did you receive? zip or rar achive? Do you know how to unpack them? Or is it the single files you can't listen to? Do you have Windows Media Player or itunes on your PC? To unpack zip files download one of these: http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm http://www.stuffit.com/ To unpack rar archives download this: http://www.winrar.de/download.php Hope it helps!

My Review Hello tapemaker, here comes my review for you: I received my tape a couple of days ago, but I didn't have time to listen to it, and then I lost some sleep over it contemplating that I didn't have time to listen to it. Deary me! My tape comes with artwork and the tracks are strangly numbered 1a, 2b, 3c and so forth. There are 14 tracks. The artwork shows a collection of tapes and records scattered all over the place and pictured in reversed colours. I recognise a couple of Coldplay CDs, The Best of Buddy Holly and a record with POLSKA written all over it. Very cool! Okay, on to the music. I am very keen to meet my mix. Track 1 sounds like a very short piece of film score which recreates the picture of a dark deserted factory loft in my mind. I’m curious what is going to come next with an introduction like that. Track 2 kicks off with a thick bass sound followed by heavy piano chords and a female singer singing very rhythmic dark atmospheric chants to me. Funny thing, the first few bars I wasn’t sure what language this song was sung in. I later realized it was indeed English. LOL! There’s something about her voice. I think I know it, but then it could be anyone. And yet, the more I listen to the song, the more a picture from very long ago blends in. It reads Cat Power. Not sure, if I’m right, but I’m dead certain I like this song. Very much! Track 3 starts with a very interesting guitar riff, I’m looking forward to the vocal… oh, I know that voice… it’s very typical Kings Of Leon! Great! I think I'm the only person on this board without a Kings Of Leon album in their collection and I need to get all of them rather SOON. Thanks for this track!!! Track 4 I have never heard before, but two things crossed my mind seconds into the song: REM (tonality of the vocal) and “To Catch A Thief” (Hitchcock film from 1954), because of the first line “You see there is this cat burglar who can(‘t) see in the dark”. There’s a reference to 1954 later in the lyrics too. I’m not entirely sure, if it’s really Michael Stipe. It could be an impostor or a thief (…), but the song is very typical REM, similar to the Andy Kaufman song (Man On The Moon). As for the Hitchcock reference, I’m thrilled, because “To Catch A Thief” is one of my alltime favourite movies! And since I like REM too, I give this song a pair of undisputed thumbs up! Track 5 goes into a slightly different direction. Listening to the intro I feared a disco cracker was coming up, but the song turned into a low-tempo pop number revolving around a bass drum and a pair of brown eyes. It could be a disco soul diva on a trip. I’m not sure, if I like her voice and I’m still looking for the deeper meaning of this song. I guess it’s just a silly song about a guy with brown eyes. And that’s about it with me and the charisma of this song. It does however fit in very well into the tape! Track 6 is a screachy guitar number, the melody of which I think I’ve heard before. I have weird associations with this song. There’s a bit of Oasis crossed with Jesus Jones, then some Radiohead mixed with the unknown origin of the melody. It could be some obscure 90s Stone Roses or the like. Definitely the 90s. Not my favourite, but not bad. Track 7 is introduced by interesting acoustic guitar strumming followed by powerful folky violin. Cool! Is it a Polish lyric? I don’t understand any of it, but it sounds familiar. A couple of years ago I made plans to venture into Polish pop music (inspired by some guy on the Eurovision contest), but I never found the time to really do it. Sounds like it’s worth another try. BTW, I have ancestral ties to the Lublin and Lodz area, but I have always fought off attempts of my dad’s familiy to teach me the language. Stupid, ignorant, German brood… maybe some Polish music will do the trick. This one sounds very promising! On track 8 a lady saw a saviour… I say she needs one, because her heavy drum track song with elflike vocals was created to accompany the flickering flourescent lights of a torturous interrogation room. At least that’s the association I get from it. Interesting! Music which creates pictures must be from a movie soundtrack. Track 9 I heard before, but I can’t tell who or what it is. Oasis-like vocals, but the backing track is closer to Bowie's Heroes than to any Oasis track. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. “Kids in the night”… damn it, what is it? Track 10 Oh holy cow, this is Frank Sinatra and the coffee from Brazil! Love it! Track 11 is a cool track by a Polish, Russian or Ukranian artist! Anyone who smacks the Bush family’s collective butt is a hero, but the vocal line of this song sucks. With a real melody this could be a huge hit! спасибо! Track 12 Oh oh, a soft rock number with an English, female vocal and slight, slight traces of a foreign accent. I may be totally wrong, but could it be one of the theatrical Eastern foxtresses who we have seen on the Eurovision? I rest my case, if I’m wrong. Track 13 is Muse! I recognize that voice anywhere and anytime! I like Muse, but I can’t tolerate his breathing. Can the guy ever breathe in silence? Great song! As usual! Track 14 has lovely female vocals with lots of guitar harmonies. I like it, but it doesn’t grab me emotionally. Maybe it will grow on me with time. Dear tapemaker, thank you very much! You chose some wonderful tracks for my tape! There is a lot to explore and discover! Everything fits together perfectly and I intend to not only listen to this tape a lot, but also to X-ray some of the artists, once you told me who they are. Thumbs up! Please excuse me, if I don’t come across as enthusiastic as I should. Right now, I am so awfully tired, I am not capable of emotional outburst at the moment (its 2:50 am). Deep down I feel honoured by this great tape and the care it was compiled with. Thanks muchas! :D

The 5th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes In First Post)
TRACKLIST ALERT relevant to SWALLOWED SEAMAN and VITAAMINE!!! I am totally confused, because I made this tape for Mayasong and now I found out, that I received two brilliant reviews from you guys! Thanks so much for the praise! I am totally thrilled that both of you like my mix!!! This makes me want to listen to yours instantly, because I feel we absolutely like the same stuff! So here we go: Track 1 Expatriate - "The Spaces Between": This is a band I have only just recently discovered. They have had a bit of success in Australia and are now based in Berlin to try and conquer the European market. Their album "In The Midst Of This" is great stuff and they can rock a crowd, I can tell from front row experience Track 2 Mute Math - "Noticed": Found their track "Chaos" on a Virgin Recommends Sampler, which appealed very much to the chaotic soul inside of me, got their album "Mute Math" and loved it ever since. Other than that I know nothing about this US band. Track 3 Betchadupa - "My Army Of Birds And Gulls": So glad you like it! This is a young band from New Zealand which sadly no longer exists, mainly because their lead singer Liam Finn has gained himself quite a name as a solo artist now. It's in his genes. His dad is Neil Finn of Crowded House. Track 4 Bic Runga - "Suddenly Strange": Another New Zealand artist. This lady is superb, on record and live. She's huge down under, sadly hardly anybody knows her elsewhere. This is from her brilliant debut album "Drive". Track 5 Cherry Ghost - "People Help The People": A band from Bolton, England who released a fantastic sounding album called "Thirst In Romance", to critical acclaim I might add, went on tour supporting Crowded House, climbed the UK charts and were consequently dropped by EMI shortly after. Now, who's surprised that EMI's going down the dumper? Track 6 Sean Lennon - "Dead Meat": Wow! Vitaamine knew instantly that this is Sean. Funny thing, like Swallowed Seamon I was put off by his cartoon voice at first, but it grew on me and now I absolutely love this track. I have yet to discover more of his stuff, but from what I have heard so far, he is very arty-farty, fluent in French and maybe even Japanese, which I like a lot, and there is absolutely no need to hide in the shadow of his big daddy John. Track 7 Brett Anderson - "Chinese Whispers": Swallowed Seaman may remember his voice, because he used to be the lead singer of the British band Suede (or the London Suede in the US). Since Suede split up, Brett has conquered his drug addiction and released three brilliant solo albums. I saw him live only last month and the whole place was stunned by his super emotional performance. Track 8 Jennifer Lopez - "Me haces falta": To tell you the truth, Swallowed Seaman, I didn't know you were a Spanish student, but I wanted to show my mixtape partner that there was more to Latin music than Ricky or Enrique. The funny bit is that this atypical song is by the ultimate Latina herself. I never cared too much for Jay Lo, the recording artist (I like her acting), until the strangest thing happened to me. I was in New York, midnight shopping at Tower Records, when suddenly I felt something staring at me from one of the shelves. It was Jay Lo's first Spanish album "Como ama una mujer", produced by Marc Anthony. I don't know what it was, but the second I saw it I needed it. She didn't disappoint me. Este disco es super fantastico! And I recommend both of you get it! Yes, Vitaamine, it’s the one with “Que hiciste” on it! Track 9 Duran Duran - "Boxful Of Honey": This is my favourite band of all time and thus they needed to be on this tape. It's from their last album "Red Carpet Massacre" and when I told the lead singer Simon Le Bon I absolutely loved this track, he asked me whether I knew what "A Boxful Of Honey" really meant. Well, it kind of corresponds to the Swallowed Seaman’s username. :wink3: Track 10 Finn Brothers - "Only Talking Sense": Oh no! That Swallowed Seaman considers this skippable is making my heart sink. I so love this track and consider it a total masterpiece! I’m so relieved that at least Vitaamine liked it instantly. It's by Neil and Tim Finn of Crowded House/Split Enz (lots of Kiwis on this tape.) As someone on youtube put it: Fear, honesty, communication and bravery. What more could you want from a song? Track 11 Our Lady Peace - "Not Enough": Spot on, Swallowed Seaman! I discovered them on vacation in Canada and although they are not very popular in Germany, I managed to see them live in my hometown three times. This song speaks to me, because I can play it loud when I feel unworthy or depressed, and suddenly all evil is washed away. Track 12 Nick Wood - "Beat Of My Heart": An Englishman living in Tokyo who very successfully writes music for Japanese TV commercials. This song was penned by Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, and was originally recorded by Japanese artist Norico, who sings on the chorus of this version. Track 13 Phoenix - "One Time Too Many": Ha, it’s very interesting that Vitaamine, altough being French, doesn’t know this song. I always thought you don’t get to hear anything but French music in France. ;-) This band from Versailles sort of lived a low life existence in my conscience too, until I recently met them at the O2 store in Cologne where they played a super inpromptu acoustic set. Loved their scarce arrangements and the French accent of singer Thomas Mars. They are also super nice! This track can be found on their album "It's Never Been Like That", but this version was taken from a German Unplugged sampler recorded in Hamburg in November 2009. Track 14 Benjamin Biolay - "Los Angeles": Some say he is the new Serge Gainsbourg, I say “WHO is Serge Gainsbourg?” I think he is THE top guy of the French pop scene. All of his albums are great and whenever he writes for other people or produces them, it is great too. This track is of his first album "Rose Kennedy". I just hope he quits smoking one day, because going to his shows you smell like a bar afterwards. Track 15 Jochen Distelmeyer - "Bleiben oder gehen": I had to include a track in my native language, German, and the guy with the unpronounceable first name is probably the most intellectual pop singer we've got. He used to front the band Blumfeld and his first solo album "Heavy" has just been released. It's full of very brilliant pop gems and not heavy at all. Why he picked an English title I don't know. His album is entirely in German and as far as I know all of the Blumfeld albums are in German as well. Mind you, listening to these songs is a good way to learn German. I don’t speak French yet, but I will once I have finished with all of the French albums in my collection… Track 16 John Taylor - "Fields Of Eden": So happy you like it. John Taylor is my personal super hero. He's the very handsome bass guitarist of Duran Duran, who suffered a bit of a crisis in the mid-90s due to ill marriage and artistic boredom, and as a result went into rehab, left the band, got divorced, released a couple of solo albums, got filthy rich by second marriage (to Juicy Couture founder) and returned to the band. This is an epic track about how this current resident of Los Angeles misses the fields of his native England. I'm not sure, if he can sing, but he definitely knows how to write a good tune. Track 17 Yoav - "Beautiful Lie": Originally from South Africa, Yoav spends most of his time couch surfing between Montreal, London, Johannesburg and Moscow, where he performs the occasional live show. Rather interestingly, what you hear on this track is just him and his guitar. He won't use any other instruments, neither on his album "Charmed & Strange", nor when he plays live. He's a man with a guitar and a loop machine. Absolutely fascinating to watch! I saw him opening for Liam Finn here in Cologne and was instantly persuaded to buy his album. Track 18 Bunbury - "Hay muy poca gente": I love this track! It's Enrique Bunbury, the singer of Spanish rock giants Héroes del Silencio taken from his most recent solo album "Hellville de luxe". Vitaamine doesn’t like his voice, but Swallowed Seamon should definitely check out the first album of Héroes del Silencio called “Senderos de traición. Track 19. Gavin Rossdale - "Forever May You Run": I love his voice too! When I compiled this tape, I had a hard time deciding where to put this track. Initially this was the intro of the tape, but I shuffled it further to the back step by step. The only thing I knew was that it wasn't going to be dropped. Track 20 Wilfred LeBouthillier - "L'odyssée": Wow! This is indeed an epic track. But the guy's name is epic too, don't you think? I usually don't give a hoop about casting shows, but this one time I had to give in. Wilfred was the winner of the Quebec(oise) casting show "Star Académie” in 2003. This 25-year-old had made a living as a lobster fisherman in New Brunswick, until he stunned everyone with his intense vocal performances of classic French and international tunes. He will probably never be known in the US, because I don't think he will ever sing in English, but he will soon conquer la France. Or so I hope. And now again, for everyone, in short: 01: Expatriate - The Spaces Between / from the album "In The Midst Of This" 02: Mute Math - Noticed / from the album "Mute Math" 03: Betchadupa - My Army Of Birds And Gulls /from the album "Aiming For Your Head" 04: Bic Runga - Suddenly Strange / from the album "Drive" 05: Cherry Ghost - People Help The People / from the album "Thirst For Romance" 06: Sean Lennon - Dead Meat / from the album "Friendly Fire" 07: Brett Anderson - Chinese Whispers / from the album "Wilderness" 08: Jennifer Lopez - Me haces falta / from the album "Como ama una mujer" 09: Duran Duran - Boxful Of Honey / from the album "Red Carpet Massacre" 10: Finn Brothers - Only Talking Sense / from the album "Finn" 11: Our Lady Peace - Not Enough / from the album "Gravity" 12: Nick Wood - Beat Of My Heart / from the EP "Passion" 13: Phoenix - One Time Too Many (unplugged) / from the album "Live And Unplugged" 14: Benjamin Biolay - Los Angeles / from the album "Rose Kennedy" 15: Jochen Distelmeyer - Bleiben oder gehen / from the album "Heavy" 16: John Taylor - Fields Of Eden / from the album "John Taylor" 17: Yoav - Beautiful Lie / from the album "Charmed And Strange" 18: Bunbury - Hay muy poca gente / from the album "Hellville de luxe" 19: Gavin Rossdale - Forever May You Run / from the album "Wanderlust" 20: Wilfred LeBouthillier - L'odyssée / from the album "Droit Devant"

'ello Swallowed Seaman... :shocked2: This is just to let you know, your tracklisting will be up soon! I only found out today that you are my new mixtape partner! There was somebody else asigned to me, but they failed to submit their own tape and were kicked out of the game. Pleasure to meet you! I was so thrilled to read your review!

The 5th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes In First Post)
My review at last! Good Lord, I just finished my review after pondering for two days and spending all of Friday night writing. The last time somebody mixed me a tape, Pulp Fiction had just been released. I am somewhat excited! Track 1: Funny thing, the first line of the first song kicks off with a thought straight out of my head: “I could sleep… I could sleep…” Indeed I could. But no, I won’t. This is a nice song full of choruses and no verse at all. It starts with a mellow, monotone version of the chorus and builds up to become the official guitar-driven ghostbuster anthem for the 21st century. I like it! Track 2: Hm. Someone really meant to make me a tape of the obscure kind. It’s an up-tempo rock song, something between Kings Of Leon and Bloc Party. Listenable and definitely growing on second, and some more on third spin. I feel the urge to cut some air by rhythmic movement of the hands. Thumbs up! Track 3: Oh no! Total miss, thank you. Don’t like the singer’s voice, there’s an organ in the background, a horn section too, and the lyrics include the word “Memphis”. Four absolute “no go”s on my Richter scale. Track 4: Oh yes! String section, late bar atmosphere, the young vocalist fumes sweet nothings across a candlelit boulevard. I guess, the guy smokes too much dope, hence the melancholy of the song. “A last cigarette is all you can get…” Poor sod. But I like your song very much! Who are you? Track 5: Mid-tempo song with simple string arrangement until it gets drowned in guitars for the even simpler chorus. I prefer songs with big melodies and this one doesn’t have one. Sounds like the result of an “open band” workshop for overstressed private bankers. Which is exactly who I am. Track 6: I feel I’m being treated with quite a bunch of new bands from recent review sections. The problem with these bands is that they have yet to discover pathos, pain, passion or real crisis. I’m bored. No, there is no mercy in my eyes. Although on second spin, I do sense a hint of quality in the restrained arrangement. Can I play this on 45? Track 7: If you browse through your record collection, you will find that track 7 tends to be the best on a record. This one clearly isn’t. A cross between hillbilly and country guitars beds itself with the whining vocals of a Keith Urban impersonator. But wait, I like Keith Urban! I have to give it credit. If I could mute the silly guitars, it would be a great song! Track 8: The problem of today is that so many people feel a somewhat religious need to sing. This guy has a terrible accent, he should not be allowed to utter a word. I can literally see food falling out of his mouth too! Still this is quite a song! Good hooky melody and there is something in the guy’s voice that makes me want to know what he looks like. Just put a gag in his mouth. Track 9: Dear Coldplayer, who made me this tape, I take it you have a tooth for little ugly guys with squeeky voices, who refuse to wash. I can see black holes shine where once ivory used to glisten. Plus this song is very reminiscent of David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel, albeit a lot slower. It could be a hit single for… Ron Wood! It’s not exactly my cup of tea. Track 10: Oops, here we go. I quite like this. Guitar track very similar to “The Lights Never Go Out” by The Smith. The singer reminds me of Prefab Sprout’s Paddy McAloon, which gives you an idea of the toothless geezer I must be. Track 11: Another mid-tempo song with heavy guitars and sweet vocals. I can picture blooming adolescence caged in by cold snowy winter afternoons. Let this one be sung by a real man and it could be a hit! Track 12: Big grand up-tempo piano/strings/organ number. Spoken verse vocal by big warm voice with rough edge, until the catchy chorus sets in. Not something I would buy, but it’s not bad. Track 13: Piano! Er, no, guitar track. Another skinny guy who I’m sure could do with a haircut. This could quite seriously be a Tom Petty number. I like Tom Petty, but in all honesty, I’d prefer “Learning To Fly” over this one. Track 14: Mmmmh. This has singer/songwriter quality. The intro is very mellow with acoustic guitar, the vocalist reminds me of the late great Vic Chestnutt (R.I.P.). There’s a hint of a melody and it builds up… to nothing really. What a disappointment. I need to talk to the producer. Now! Track 15: My poor little tape maker, you must be a wee bit depressed, which may explain why you are offering music written mostly in minor key (Oh. This is a bold statement. I have no freaking idea about keys, I’m just guessing.) Have you ever had a rush of blood to the head? Quick! Find some colour in your life. The truth is I really can’t decide whether I like this song or not. At first I meant to slag it off, but the more often I listen to it, the better I like it. The poet is going insane. Track 16: And the mood lingers. Here’s a lyric extract: “This is a song for anyone with a broken heart. This is a song for anyone who can’t get out of bed. I’ll do anything to be happy.” Mmmmh. Come on, sweet little tapemaker! Let me give you a hug! And together we’ll kick the lead singer’s ass. Track 17: This song opens up like a darling bud in spring. Very nice. There’s a bit of Lilac Time meets Belle & Sebastian meets The Lemonheads in there. Love it! Track 18: Thank God, my tapemaker makes serious progress to lose his/her depression. This song is quite your average American Rock number and entirely not made for me. I’m more into the Brit/Alternative sound. Track 19: Back to mellow acoustic guitars. I believe this song should have been on earlier. Now I’m tired and find it hard to pay attention. Track 20: Final song. I expect something big… I’m still waiting. Mmmm. I’ve listened to this song three times in a row now and still it doesn’t speak to me. Miss. How sad it all must end this way. Final verdict: The ones that stick out are tracks 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, 14 and 17, whose creators I would like to explore a bit further. I think you, my tapemaker, picked songs that all fit perfectly together. You made a point of finding songs I was highly unlikely to have known before and thus you must have applied acribic care, a lot of time, determination and love to making this tape. I appreciate it a lot, because this is exactly what I did with mine, although my artists were not as obscure as yours. Also both of us made tapes with 20 tracks and I believe you had as much a hard time as me crossing out songs from the list! We need to discuss the dramatic composition of your tape though. I believe it could have done with a few adrenalin shots here and there, and since a lot of the singers sound very much alike, your list could thrive with a variation of voices. I don’t know if you realised, but there is not one female vocal on your tape. Oh, and next time remember to delete the song info in itunes information. I could not help stealing a look at the end.
