Everyday Life LA Shows
Coldplay has a long history of playing shows for KROQ and their Almost Acoustic Christmas shows are this upcoming weekend. It is possible they could be a surprise guest on one of the nights. I expected Coldplay to be one of the headliners when the lineups were announced. Working against the idea of them being a surprise guest is that they should only be a headliner.

Hi Dianne. I saw you there last night and I think it was your daughter that took a photo of my setlist after the show. I'll introduce myself next time I see you at a show. With Coldplay, it's kind of strange as I was following them through reports in NME and Q back in 2000 and was aware of their success there before Parachutes was released in the US. It came out here in November 2000, 4 months after the UK release and I bought it then without ever hearing a single note by Coldplay, just based on the reports I had read. It seemed like a band I would like and was willing to take a chance on them. Little did I know they would become huge worldwide, as there are other UK acts I like such as Travis and Manic Street Preachers that have had much less success here. In 2001 I saw them those 2 times in February and then in June when they played the Wiltern. I waited outside after that show and met the whole band. Since then it's become real hard to meet Guy. I started thinking about that show I saw at the Mayan and remembered them doing things like You Only Live Twice and What The World Needs Now, as well as In My Place a year and a half before it's release. I'm curious on your thoughts on the song A Head Full of Dreams, as you heard it at Colbert. I was really looking forward to hearing new songs, as I've been fortunate to have seen them play songs from the last 5 albums prior to them being released and that streak will end unless I get into the iHeart Radio show.

[2015-11-21] TIDALXCOLDPLAY Presented by KROQ (Tonight 20:30 LA, 04:30 UK)
Last night was an emotional show for me for multiple reasons. It goes back to Tuesday, where after calling KROQ all day long on Monday, I had the great fortune of meeting Chris. When I said to him that I hoped to see him on Firday night, he said "I'll see what I can do about that". He then had an assistant take down my info and added me to the guest list. It was an incredibly nice gesture from a guy who has always been very nice with fans in the times I've met him over the years. The show itself transported me back to February 13, 2001, the first time I saw Coldplay live. I saw them twice that night beginning with an acoustic performance at the Virgin Megastore, followed by the regular show at the Mayan Theater, which it turned out was right next door to the Belasco. It really transported me back in time 15 years. Once inside I mentioned to my friend that the first night that I saw Coldplay was next door. The person right in front of me then said it was the same for him, so it was cool to see someone else there who had followed them from the very beginning. Those who attended or watched online know how special a performance it was under the circumstances and I'm so glad they went ahead with it. Having Imagine start the show was a nice surprise. I assumed Fix You would be played and also thought O would be the perfect closer, which it turned out to be. It's great they're letting everyone return next Saturday. Unfortunately I will miss it as I'm flying to Dublin for U2's shows the following week. Those shows will be extra emotional now as well, as they were in Paris and were to have played tonight and tomorrow. I then spend a couple of days in London, but leave the day before Coldplay plays there. On Tuesday I asked Chris if they would be playing the KROQ Acoustic Christmas, but he said it wasn't on his schedule. I still hold out hope that they will play it though.

I'm very happy to say that I'm going on Friday as well. I agree with you that it does make sense to go down there and try your luck if you don't win tickets. I have had success in doing that with some of these shows with major bands in small venues. It worked for me with Coldplay at the Troubadour in 2005. I also got in for free to see Green Day perform American Idiot at the Wiltern and the Who play at the Orpheum in 2008. In the case of the Who's corporate show, a woman came out front and just handed out extra tickets to anyone who was there at the time, probably 20 tickets or so. It was general admission seating on the floor, so I was able to get in to the 7th row.

I didn't get through at all either after trying all day, but will keep on trying these next 4 days. I did have success with U2 at the Roxy, being close a couple of times with being #18 and I think #15, then getting through as #20 at the start of the second week. What I don't understand is where are all the seats for this show going? This theater supposedly has a capacity of 2,500 making it about the same size as the Wiltern and bigger than the Orpheum, yet KROQ seems to be only giving away around 20 tickets or so per day. I understand that Tidal is giving some away and there will be a guest list, but it's hard to see how many of the seats will be distributed. At least with U2 at the Roxy it made sense as it holds around 450 and KROQ gave them away for 1 1/2 weeks. With the amounts that KROQ is giving away, you would think this show would be in a small club.

Could Coldplay be headlining Made in America Festival in Los Angeles in August?
The lineup was announced today and no Coldplay, so that writer was only guessing and had no inside information.

Could Coldplay be headlining Made in America Festival in Los Angeles in August?
There are rumors that Coldplay could be one of the headliners 0f the Jay Z curated Made in America Festival that will be held in Los Angeles and Philadelphia on August 30-31. Here's a link to what I read: http://glamorosi.blogspot.com/2014/05/855-Made-America-Festival-Lineup-Rumors-Abound.html I normally wouldn't put much faith in this rumor, based on Chris saying there is no Ghost Stories tour besides this mini tour and also having personally asked Phil Harvey about that before the Royce Hall show, but at the end of the Royce Hall show Chris said "see you soon". I found it odd that he said that based on no further touring past July 1. Could it be that the band considers one off festivals as separate from promotion for Ghost Stories and they could be playing it out of Chris' friendship with Jay Z? We will know soon as the Made in America Festival will announce their lineup as early as tomorrow from what I'm hearing.

I met you before the show in the back. I was the guy who asked Phil to confirm if any tour dates were occuring after this mini tour I'm glad to hear you got in and applaud you for your efforts.

Chris on KROQ says no further toruing for Ghost Stories after this mini tour
Chris said the TV special will feature 9 songs total which are 6 from Ghost Stories and 3 older songs.

That seems to be the way it's going. Maybe they will use the second half of the year to complete that album and have it out in a year from now.

Chris on KROQ says no further toruing for Ghost Stories after this mini tour
Chris was on Kevin and beans morning show on KROQ today and when asked about a larger tour for this album, he immediately said no. He explained that they couldn't see performing these songs in large arenas, as they are more intimate songs. He said the TV special (and supposed DVD release down the road) is in place of a full tour. As for the TV special this Sunday, he says it features only 6 of the 8 new songs plus 3 older songs. I assume a DVD release would probably include all 8 songs. At one point during the interview he mentioned a new song that may be released next year. Perhaps their plan is to have a followup to Ghost Stories out next year and to then do a large scale tour behind it? I know someone stated in the Royce Hall thread that there was a meeting at Atlantic about a tour for early 2015 Either they decided against doing that or maybe it is to go along with another album? I do remember at the Saturday afternoon video shoot at Sony for the TV special/DVD that during a short break in filming, a girl yelled out asking when the tour would start and Chris responded by saying that he didn't know and that they were focusing on doing just small shows, which is the current mini tour.

I would take what Chris said to mean that he knows once they go on tour, that they won't play all 9 songs from Ghost Stories in a single show. It's very likely that this weekends shows are the only times they play it straight through even with them doing more small shows over the next couple of months. I think the actual tour will probably be underway by July and last through much of 2015.

That would have been a great crowd to say the show with. When you let in people for free it brings out people who never would pay to see an act while keeping out some big fans who didn't have the same luck. An even better bargain was the March 2005 show at the Troubadour where they charged $10. Coldplay is very aware that Los Angeles was where they first caught on big in the U.S. and since Rush of Blood, they have played small shows here prior to the release of every album. We have been very fortunate to be able to see these shows.

He did not do that at any of those 3 shows. On Friday night there was a track around the stage for cameras to revolve around it. I was in the front row by Guy and there was a crew member sitting next to me whose job was to pull on the cables as these cameras went around. On Saturday this track was gone and for the evening show, they had guys with steadicam cameras who were walking around the perimeter of the stage. The Saturday afternoon show was different in some ways. They only played 6 of the new songs, skipping Ink, Oceans and O. This was was described as a video shoot and that was correct. They were frequently stopping between songs and getting directions from the stage manager. Chris got very annoyed when he had to stand motionless for over 5 minutes staring into a camera while they got everything precise. This camera was on a large boom set up between the people that were facing the very front of the stage. When they used it it would come in low over the heads of the people in that section, so they were told for large parts of the show to not stand up. At the 2 evening shows everyone stood up throughout the show, but for the afternoon show, people seemed to feel restrained and were usually staying seated. During Paradise Chris had to announce that we could stand, but people would sit down after songs ended. It was interesting to be able to see the show both ways.

The stage manager Alec said it would be a tv show and DVD before all 3 1iota performances and I know Chris also mentioned a DVD as well. I get the impression it will air first on NBC, then be released as a DVD at the same time as the album release. I believe that was what Chris implied. Maybe it will be sold as part of a deluxe edition (beyond the Target deluxe edition) in May? Speaking of the Target edition I saw that the 3 bonus tracks are now identified on wikipedia as being All Your Friends, Ghost Story and O (Part 2/Reprise).

I've been lucky enough to meet Chris several times over the years and I echo what Dianne said about him being a super nice guy. I've had him sign some of my cds and vinyls and on a few them, he drew what I think are self portraits of his face, but they are funny looking faces. The funniest time I met him was unintentionally. It was a Radiohead show at the Hollywood Bowl in September 2003. I was standing near the artist entry where they used to have a ticket booth where they would handle the VIPs and celebrities attending shows. I saw from behind a tall guy wearing a hoody walk up to that ticket booth and I actually thought it could be Chris. When he turned around I saw that it was and I spoke briefly to him, mentioning I had seen him play that very venue less than 4 months earlier. He mentioned to me that he was meeting his girlfriend there. I could see Gwyneth waiting for him on the other side of where the ticket holders were. When he went to have his ticket scanned, it didn't work and they sent Chris back to the ticket window to get it sorted out. I found it amusing that this ticket taker was turning away this guy who sold out 2 shows there just months before. Chris didn't get upset like many celebrities would have and came back with a ticket that worked. Dianne I saw you there last night. It was also my 24th time seeing Coldplay. I had a lot of luck in that I was able to get into all 3 1iota performances, but couldn't get a ticket for today. I was in the row right behind you last night and seated right behind Will. I recognized you from your photos with Will and Chris and could see the joy on your face throughout the show. I'm happy to hear that today's show was filled with big fans as the previous 3 shows had a lot of people who had never seen Coldplay, but were there since they got in for free. We had people behind us talking loudly at times, even during the hits they would have known. One thing that happened at the Saturday afternoon performance was someone yelled out "When does the tour start?" Chris answered saying something like "I don't know. We'll be doing these small shows for awhile". It sounds like a lot more people will have a chance to experience Coldplay up close.

"In My Place" early performance @ the $2 Bill theater on MTV
I wonder if there are any earlier versions available because they were performing In My Place live over a year before it was released. I saw them do it in February 2001 at the Mayan in L.A.

One thing I found pretty amazing about last night was how well rehearsed they sounded playing all 9 songs from the new album. Five of those songs were played for the first time ever, yet they sounded real tight. Since 2005, I've seen Coldplay do small performances in L.A. 1-2 months before the release of albums, but they never played more than around 5 songs from the upcoming album. This time they had to learn to play live the entire album, while at the same time completing the album. I don't know how much better these songs may get as the tour continues, but they sounded real good last night.

I could see them using these visual projections but not in the same way, as they are using the ceiling a lot in these performances. It's all in the round with the ceiling and the upper area of the walls being used as the "video screens".

More just being outdoors at night, which includes stars, but oceans are a part of it with some of the projections they used. It's very much a multi media presentation, with visual projections for the Ghost Stories songs.

No stage outfits, just normal clothes. The staging was real cool, but I won't describe it that much other than to say like in the Midnight video, it's designed to appear like you are outside at night.
