[unpopular opinion] In My Place - Excellent...A Whisper - Excellent...SOS - Excellent [/unpopular opinion] :P Oh, and X&Y is fantastic, like futuristic Beatles.
  3. Actually, I would submit that calling the Times a "horrible newspaper" makes that guy look like an idiot. I don't care if you hate the New York Times, but it is our country's paper of record, like it or not. So to call it horrible makes one look, well, idiotic. My guess, and I doubt I am wrong, is that the guy who doesn't like the Times doesn't have one smart thing to say about it. Prove me wrong and I'd be happy to apologize. Disliking the NY Times has nothing to do with someone's intelligence. EDIT to add: I simply do not understand the Coldplay/Blue Merle comparison. I love both bands to death, and I think they sound nothing alike.
  4. What are the 'X' songs and 'Y' songs?
  5. Great song. Jonny's a guitar hero. :guitarist:
  6. I get almost a struggle with the idea of spirituality or God (represented by little white shadows, impossiblities in and of themselves), plus a really cool little existential despair ("all this space I'm taking up," i.e. I'm not worth the air I breathe). So the struggle with belief in divinity, etc. is that the "sound" (spiritual inspiration/white shadows) that he listened for as a boy, when he had faith, is "breaking up" as he grows older. In other words, his faith is dimming. He finds an answer is in "the new sun rising." Or at least that's what I get from it. :D

Well, just to give perspective, I didn't like Everything's Not Lost when I first heard it. So I kinda' suck. :smoking:

Probably my least favorite track, but it's growing on me. We'll see. I like the guitar riffs in the chorus quite a bit.
  9. I think it's quite a bit darker. The whole album has a Politik/AROBTTH/GPASUYF cynicism/despair/defeatist feel to it. Not every song, mind you, but overall a bit existential(sort of). I really like it, but it'll take a while to decide if it's better than the last two.
  10. Everybody's essentially a politician in democratic settings, in that they have their own opinions. I understand the annoyance with some people stating their views, but I also think the annoyance is misdirected and pretty useless. Everybody, including musicians, have (and are entitled to) an opinion even if you or I or anyone else thinks they're wrong. Just because we hear their opinions more loudly doesn't mean they shouldn't express them. Not flaming, just saying :)
  11. You've been at the Toilet Duck again, haven't you?
  12. Yep. :smoking:

  14. I think it's a vibraphone. Similar to a xylophone. Not sure though, could just as easily be spoons. :)
  15. I watched Live 2003 after not listening to the boys for awhile, and it blew me away how cool and cohesive they are together on stage. I love the commradery(sp?). It shows in the music.
  16. Some of Johnny's guitar riffs sound Edge-influenced (I esp. agree w/ Justine's White Shadows comment). That's a good thing. But he (and the rest of the band) are also extraordinarily original when synthesizing his/their influences. Which is an even better thing. Great band. Period. Oh, and great topic, Miggy. I don't fully agree but perfectly expressed opinion on your part. :)
  17. It's assuredly as good as Parachutes and AROBTTH, but it'll take a couple of listens to find if it's actually better. It's certainly more epic than the last two, which is good...maybe.
  18. Your humble opinion is dead on. All these meticulously labored "it's pretty great for sucky music" reviews are rediculous. :smoking:
  19. Twisted Logic. Debs said it was pretty mellow. She lied ;)
  20. Strange thread
  21. Three-way: Till Kingdom Come/Twisted Logic/Fix You
  22. The Beatles did this. They created the whole expectation that bands have to explode their style every album. I just don't think it's realistic to expect that from every band. I think they have progressed, even evolved from Rush of Blood. Not in huge Kid A/Sgt. Pepper's style, but they have mastered their own style and manhandled it into X&Y. This is a more of a Rubber Soul to Revolver transition. Or at least that's what I see thus far.

When Johnny kicked in with that fast guitar on SNL, I nearly had a heart attack. Blew my mind. Does the actual version go on longer than the SNL version? It seemed kind of abrupt.

listen to the ones you've already heard, i.e. Fix You, Square One, What If, etc. and give yourself one you haven't heard :wink3:
  25. When Johnny started doing those big shilouetted swooshes, I loved the song again. :D
