Today's gossip: Friday, 24 December

The guests included Elton and David, Wayne and Coleen, Geri and Darius and, erm, Greg Rusedski. But it was godmother Liz Hurley who caused the biggest stir at the Beckhams' star-studded christening service yesterday.

 

Although Victoria had asked her female guests to dress modestly and not display any cleavage - reportedly because she herself is feeling insecure about her looks at the moment - Liz defied Posh's dress code and showed up for the party in a dazzling low-cut silver satin gown which, in true Hurley style, left little to the imagination.

 

Quite how Victoria reacted to Liz's decision, we don't know - but it may well have been the last straw for poor Posh. According to sources, she's spent much of the past week sleepless and in tears from a migraine, and almost called off the celebration with just 24 hours to go. Apparently 'puffy-faced from crying and verging on hysterical', Victoria decided the only way to save the day was to fly in a team of top make-up artists.

 

And it sounds like they did the trick. Despite Liz stealing today's headlines, the Beckhams' lavish party seemed to be the memorable event that Posh wanted it to be. The guests each received a single sparkling diamond as a souvenir, David made a tearful speech thanking Victoria for standing by him this past year - and even the hordes of reporters waiting outside the gates of Beckingham Palace got a glass of pink champagne. It really must be the season of goodwill!
