April 15, 200521 yr ok here's one of those weird math things that don't seem to make sense, i know someone on this board has had to have heard of this one somewhere, now it isn't really the absolute right wording, but it should give you the gist of it. if anyone has heard this one and knows the answer, help out, i wanna look smart in front of my friend, haha. 3 friends decided to share a room for the night. the concierge at the hotel told them that it would be 30 dollars to stay there for 1 night. so the friends split the rent 3 ways, paying 10 dollars each. the concierge later found out that the rent had changed that day and was only 25 dollars, instead of 30. so he walked back to the guys' room to bring back the 5 dollars. on the way however, he decided he was hungry and kept two of the 5 dollars that he had, giving the guys back only 3 dollars total. so the guys split the 3 dollars 3 ways, so that each of them got a dollar, taking one dollar off of what they paid each. so essentielly they paid 9 dollars each. if you take their 9 dollars mulitiplied 3 ways you get 27 dollars. add the two dollars that the concierge took for food and you get 29 dollars. what happened to the extra dollar?
April 15, 200521 yr forgetting about the $5 for a minute and if it was only $25 then they would have only paid$8.33 each and *3 and you get $25 you add the $1 back on that they each had to get that would make it $9.33 and *3 and you get $27.99 roughly and then add on $2 and that roughly $30. probably wrong but hey i tried
April 15, 200521 yr ok.. Now, ABCD is the same as BDFC, and BADF, is parrelal to BDFC? get it? :stunned:

You shouldn't add the $2, but should substract (right word?) them. At first they gave away $30. They got back $3, so they are only down $27. So $9 each. Those $27 consist of the room of $25 and the $2 the concierge kept. It all adds up.

Hmm quite challengin!Well I'll try anyway, the real price is 25/3=8.33(there is actualy far more .3333s but you can use your calculator for precise number, I limited the number to 2 decimals) per friend. So the each guy had 8.33+1 that the concierge gave them.So that equals 9.33, and then you multiplay it by 3 guys 9.33*3=28 plus the 2 dollars the concierge decided to spend on is the following, 30 the price they payed, but since it's 25 will divide that by 3. 25/3=8.33 8.33+1=9.33 9.33*3=28 28+2=30! I hope this is correct and that i made myself clear. :D
