While his predecessor shunned fancy duds, the new pope enjoys donning Prada and Gucci, as well as elaborate ecclesiastical tailoring. He may not be on the cover of Vogue, but the man has turned heads with his shoes, hats, capes and sunglasses. Check out the pope's bright red shoes! In early December, Pope Benedict was spotted wearing Gucci sunglasses and bright red Prada loafers. "Those red shoes have made quite an impression," Vatican historian Alberto Melloni told The Associated Press. Just days after Christmas in his weekly public audience in St. Peter's Square, Benedict wore what can only be described as a Santa Claus hat. The fur-trimmed stocking cap is officially known as a camauro hat. He was also seen in December in Rome wearing an elegant red velvet cape trimmed in ermine. Is it the pope or Santa Claus? AP notes that the Santa cap actually has a distinguished papal pedigree. The caumaro dates to the Middle Ages and was worn by many popes for their official portraits, including one of Julius II that was painted by Raphael. The velvet cape is called a mozetta; while it, too, has long been part of papal attire, no pope has actually worn one since the 1970s. So is the Benedict a fashion snob? No, say those in the know. "He wouldn't know Gucci from smoochi," Marjorie Weeke, a former official at the Vatican's Social Communications Office, quipped to AP.
