Fastest Caterpillar

The larvae of the Mother-of-Pearl moth, Pleurotya ruralis, can travel 38.1 cm (15 in) per second, the caterpillar equivalent of 241 km/h (150 mph). The Mother-of-Pearl moth is the only creature known to curl itself up and roll away if attacked. Their bodies are made up of 13 segments along which all their legs are connected. If you give these caterpillars a strong poke it will go backwards, roll itself into a ball and roll away! It can usually roll through five complete revolutions on a flat surface travelling at about 40 times its normal speed!

Highest G-Force Endured By An Insect

The click beetle (Athous haemorrhoidalis) is found in hedgerows, scrub, and woodland areas. The click that gives the insect its name is generated by the quick "jack-knife" movement of the creature's body in a swift snapping movement. This also generates lift and the record-breaking G-force. The beetle jumps this way to avoid predators, and can leap up to 15 cm (6 in) high.
