yeah i thought he did alright. way better than the other people who push their voices. i really don't like this season's contestants. they all seem like posers who try too hard. i really liked last season. they all seemed so talented and were actually creative with their music. unlike this season, they all just want the fame.

Oh, yeah. The guy who performed "Clocks". Well, I didn't like it much, but at least he did better than the other guys who have sung Coldplay songs on the show, right? I loved Ryan's performance of "Losing My Religion", though. =)

^ I really liked that too, I thought it was the performance of the night !

^ I really liked that too' date=' I thought it was the performance of the night ![/quote']

Yeah, I thought so too. He pulled it off really well. I also sort of liked Zayra's performance of "867-5309 Jenny". :D

^ Ah, she's different, that girl! I kinda didn't like her at the beginning...she seemed unrefined unlike the others and a bit out of tune, but I've come to like her uniqueness :P

Yeah, she was a bit weird in the beginning, but it's fun watching her change her performances every week. =) This one was one of her best, I think.

I thought so too, so when the judges needed a bit more time to decide...I thought it should have been an easy decision to make =P

Zayra wasn't in the bottom three last night right? cos I turned the tv on at 9 when it was suppose to be 8 =/

yeah Zayra is odd for sure if you type in rockstar supernova they have the clips to watch for anyone who can't see the show

I thought the guy that sung Clocks did well. The band played well too.

The guy who sung Yellow lost me when he sung my favourite lyrics of all time wrong.

The guy who sung Don't Panic, well I don't really understand why he would pick that song if he wanted to rock out or whatever.

The mansion show was more non-event non-drama, although there was some tension when Tommy Lee was announced as playing drums for whoever picked “Higher Ground” this week, which prompted Ryan to call Patrice a bitch. Oooh, edgy.

So Patrice starts us out this week with the Chili Pepper version of “Higher Ground,” although I was kind of hoping that Josh would have kept it and done the Stevie Wonder version to show the soul he keeps saying that he has. Patrice is all punk chick this week and does an energetic, but screamy, take on the song. The big finish was nice - you don’t get enough of the big crashing endings to rock songs these days. Everyone is impressed, but Dave points out that Tommy Lee is such a huge presence that a bunch of the singers will “disappear” in front of him. Luckily that would never happen to Vince Neil these days, since he takes up most of the stage now.

Josh does go the soul route, although with Sublime’s “Santeria,” and it’s nice to have some different styles like that mixed into the songs instead of Nirvana all the time. I was never a big fan of Sublime, but this is a good, mellow, soulful song, and everyone really likes it. It won’t win the competition, but it’ll keep him alive.

Dilana goes with Bad Company’s “Can’t Get Enough,” which is exactly the kind of growling rock song that her voice is perfect for. It’s weird because I don’t think she’s roit for our band, but I’m really becoming a fan of her work here. She has a distinctive voice, which she knows how to use, and they really need to throw her some Joplin so we can see what she does with it.

Toby continues the irritating “one Nirvana song each week” trend with “Pennyroyal Tea.” This show is really making me reconsider my enjoyment of their catalog. Toby does an interesting rearrangement of the song, doing an electric version of it, but maintaining the same tempo as the original, and omitting the big rock change in the middle. It’s OK, but I’m really burned out on Nirvana and this didn’t impress me as much as Dilana did this week.

Zayra, the human train wreck, reinterprets “867-5309” as a punk song while wearing a leopard-print bathing suit. Uhhhhh… yeah. When Dilana now looks like the well-adjusted one, you know she’s crazy. The band thinks this is the funniest thing they’ve ever seen, and actually have to take a commercial break to compose themselves before giving an opinion. After four minutes of debating amongst themselves, the guys admit they’re keeping her around to see what wacky stuff she does next. I think people might be voting for her on the “vote for the worst” American Idol principle. Well, she’s not BORING, I’ll give her that.

Magni brings it back to this galaxy with Coldplay’s “Clocks,” which is pretty much the same song as every other song Coldplay has ever written. Very faithful to the original, although asking the crowd to “make some noise” for a Coldplay song is a pretty unfair request to those who might be trying to sleep through it. Anyway, Magni is still really good and one of my favorites.

Jill tries to recover from last week with “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” which you’d think is a hard song to screw up, but somehow she manages to oversing the hell out of it and turn it into a grating experience. She sounds like she’d be more comfortable doing Lita Ford covers in a bar somewhere. This is totally un-melodic and she’s just hitting high notes that aren’t even in the original song! Call CSI, we’ve got a murder. Dave says she’s the bathroom break of the show. OH, SNAP! This was not the performance she needed after last week’s comments.

Ryan strips “Losing My Religion” down to a piano and does it all emo style. The dude’s still not having any FUN, though. I wanna see him smile, or do a Poison song or something. He’s much more watchable now, at least. He smiles during the comments, if nothing else. Tommy points out that he’s gonna get laid because of that performance, and isn’t that the important thing?

Lukas continues the bad run tonight, ruining one of my favorite songs, Hole’s “Celebrity Skin,” and just butchering it. He’s totally off the melody for most of the song and all he does is the same vocal growl. At least the guys call him on it instead of giving him a free pass for his crap like they usually do.

Storm changes it up, appropriately enough, with David Bowie’s “Changes,” and it’s another stripped-down solo shot leading into the standard version. Very nice, the song suits her voice and she doesn’t mess with it. Again, it won’t win her the encore or anything, but she brought the goods.

Dana finishes with “Baba O’Riley,” which is quite possibly the greatest Who song ever and thus she will earn my wrath by screwing it up. This was fine, but she was boring as ever here. Tommy points out that it’s tough for her to get the song when she was only a teenager three years ago.

Elimination show time!

After some mansion recap, Dana shows off a new tattoo on her hip and we learn that Toby and Dana skipped practice! GASP! Man, they’re hurting for manufactured drama this year, but at least the performances are good for the most part.

Rather shockingly, Toby was in the bottom three as of the end of the performance show, along with Jill and perennial loser Zayra, but Dana and Patrice were added to that list by the end of the voting period. Zayra even shows up IN COSTUME because she’s expecting to be in the bottom three, no doubt. Shockingly, to me, Lukas is safe, and even Dave notes that he could have done with a trip to the bottom three this week.

First up on the chopping block, it’s Jill, and to say she needs a hell of a performance would be an understatement. She goes with Heart’s “Alone,” a rather suspiciously coincidental choice considering that Gilby was name-dropping that very band last week. Comparisons to Carrie Underwood will no doubt crop up, but I thought Jill’s ‘80s voice matched up with this very well and her oversinging fit the song this time, as she killed it and saved herself.

Next up, Dana and her crazy tattooed body. You know she’s badass because of her treble clef. It’s like gang signs for band geeks. Her song of choice: “The House of the Rising Sun.” That can’t be a good idea, especially after they were just making fun of her for doing another song that’s too old for her last night. And indeed, this was not exactly to Animals form, sounding like a girl singing a song WAY too old for her.

Finally, Patrice goes with an odd choice, a Jeff Buckley song that she manages to do without changing notes even once that I could detect. It was like the solo from “Cinnamon Girl” or something, except in vocal form. And it went on FOREVER, as I actually started hitting the forward skip button on my DVD recorder and had to move up, like, three minutes to finally finish the song.

Still, despite boring the crap out of everyone left awake after Dana’s number, Patrice manages to survive another week, as Dana goes home. I think it was because everyone was so bored by Patrice’s song that they drifted off and forgot to eliminate her or something. Regardless, whoever they picked out of this crew was a good choice to go home anyway.

Until next week, remember: Don’t get a tattoo for a reality show and then get eliminated later in the night. That’s just silly.

I know, right? They didn't need a whole commercial break to say that she changes up her style every week and that she did good. =P w/e. Hmm, I don't know. I didn't get to find out if it was. I was watching "So You Think You Can Dance" results show. =)

I actually love Zayra. Besides being kinda really hot, she's orignal. You've gotta respect that. No one else there is the LEAST bit original.

As for the CP stuff. My favorite is Magni (Clocks), second is Matt (Yellow), and Lucas (Don't Panic) is in way last! All three, IMO, were terrrible, but the band rocked with Clocks! And Matt did pretty good with Yellow, just really different from Chris, and he didn't use any faucetto, so it just sounded really weird.

Yeah, she's original so that's why it's really fun watching what she'll do next. You either love her or hate her, but I love her. =) Magni did do better than the other two, but I didn't like it much. True, the band was awesome.

^^You should read the TVgasm recaps. They're hilarious. =)

I googled TVgasm recaps and I think I found what you're talking about. It is indeed funny ! I didn't know Zayra's outfit had lasers, um , there :laugh3:

Former 'Supernova' contender moving on

2135752-921462.jpg

Last month, when the Star-Telegram talked to Dallas resident and Rock Star: Supernova contestant Zayra Alvarez in Los Angeles, she seemed to anticipate the first question: Isn't this show an odd fit for her?

After all, Alvarez is a native of Puerto Rico whose voice has a strong Latin-music tinge, and here she is auditioning for a group made up of former members of Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses and Metallica.

"All I needed to know is that it wasn't going to be metal," she said in July. "It's going to be more pop -- not pop, but more alternative. They described that it was going to be more like a mix of Coldplay and Radiohead. And I love that."

Unfortunately, viewers didn't love Alvarez, whose unusual stage moves and outrageous fashion sense frequently got her voted into the show's bottom three every week. The Supernova guys kept bringing her back, but, despite giving her strongest performances yet, she was eliminated from the CBS reality series Wednesday night.

"I'm good, I'm good," Alvarez said by phone Thursday when asked how she was doing. "I know that those last performances, to me, were my best. If that didn't please them, I'm cool with what I did, and I'm going to keep going."

The group -- consisting of drummer Tommy Lee, guitarist Gilby Clarke and bassist Jason Newsted -- also acted as judges on the show, along with co-host Dave Navarro. Navarro, especially, often said that Alvarez didn't seem right for the band but that she might have a good solo career ahead of her. And when she performed a Spanish-language original song on Tuesday's show, she finally seemed in her element. But she says it's too soon to know where she's going with this.

"I have no idea," she said. "I'm fresh out of the oven. I don't know what the world is doing out there." (The contestants are sequestered in an L.A. mansion during the run of the show.)

"I've always done Spanish, but I'm just in the middle of finishing writing an English-language album, and I do want to rock out more," she said. "I'll do Spanish as well, because that's just part of me."

Although Rock Star's "Rockers" occasionally bicker, they're always portrayed as being supportive of one another's performances, and Alvarez said that support was genuine. Two other contestants with Texas links, Austin's Patrice Pike (who attended school in Dallas) and Houston-based, South Africa-born Dilana Robichaux, remain on the show, and Robichaux is emerging as the favorite.

But Alvarez wouldn't commit when asked who she thinks should win. "I think everybody should win," she said of the seven remaining contestants.

Alvarez said she'll return to Dallas this weekend, but she's not sure whether she'll remain in Texas or relocate to L.A. The biggest drag about elimination, aside from not getting her star gig, is being away from the other contestants. "We were in a war together," she said. "Some great friendships were formed. ... It was a cool summer camp, big-time."

So sad... but I'm glad that Zayra's out.

I was upset to see Magni at the bottom three... :(

Anyone voting for songs they should do in next week's show?

Rock Star: Supernova - Ice Brings Fire

Magni7.jpg

Rock Star: Supernova, this year's reality rock show talent search, is looking for a lead singer to front the newly formed, Supernova. Comprised of Gilby Clark of Guns N Roses, Jason Newsted of Metallica, and Tommy Lee from Motley Crue. The producer's travels went on a global quest which brought them to Iceland. Magni Asgeirssonwas one of the aspiring rockers to audition. Magni, already had formulated his dream to be a rocker by age 11, by 15, he was performing. His first album cut in 1997 was with his band, Shape. Magni left Shape in 1999 to join the up and coming pop band, A Moti Sol, they toured all over Iceland, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Luxemburg and the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool. They've released six albums, two went gold, and have a new single in the Top Five in Iceland.

Vocally, stylistically and interpersonally, Magni has demonstrated a certain level of preeminence over the other contestants. He's often in the role as 'house moderator' the arbitrator of issues. I came across this interview video for Iceland TV. He talks about working on writing some music while he's been interred in the Rock Star mansion, conflicting whether to write in English or Icelandic. He talks about his homeland; Iceland should be proud of their ambassador of music, he's gaining international exposure and interest in Iceland along with well-representing his country. During the interview he opens up easily demonstrating a gentle humor, a depth and breadth, he comes across uniquely unaffected and natural. Magni doesn't drape himself with jewelry, layer on the make-up, have metal protruding from his face nor cover his torso with body art. He is for the music, a trait lacking in many musicians in the industry currently.

He's gained the nickname, the "The Iceman" for obvious reasons, this man's performing style mirrors the country he's from. A country that was formed by volcanic activity yet for much of the time covered with ice, he presents himself, cool, relaxed, yet underneath, fire in his veins. His performance of Coldplay's Clocks provides a perception of the man's vocal capabilities. He exhibits deep vocal range, power pipes, you feel that internal fire. The performance that completely sealed the deal for me was his stripped back version of The Dolphin's Cry, performed with just his acoustic guitar. Icy-hot delivery, restrained, controlled, an intense performance that he made appear effortless. I see brilliance in this man, his talent aspiring on par with Bono with the right career navigation. He is just that good.

I am astounded and confused why Magni has struggled the past two weeks in amassing sufficient votes to stay out of the bottom three. One reason may lie in the fact that Iceland cannot vote until after 3:00 a.m., an ill-conceived time period.. Fans States side may have thought he wasn't in jeopardy, but will now have to step up the support. Recently reported on Icelandic TV, he was a mere 100 votes short to keep him out of the bottom three. This week he performed Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Tuesday night with passion, zeal, fabulous vocals. Wednesday night's performance should put an end to his bottom three streak. In the elimination round he blazed with "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix. This was the best performance this season in this show. Magni played guitar, interacting with the talented House Band guitarist delivering a stunning performance, drawing attention to the band as a performing unit, not concerned to have all eyes focused on him, elevating the act like a great frontman should! All the while looking like he and that band had played together for years. I can't remember any contestants in either of the two seasons of Rock Star, doing anything even remotely similar.

Witnessed in his performance of "Fire", the essence of the molten power and promise of this man's talent. What will be a test of The Iceman in next week's competition is whether he'll release that fire and provide another flamethrower caliber performance. Magni with his magnificent voice, must magnify his efforts, show the world the fabulous gift he owns. Winning this would allow him to breakthrough the window from local celebrity to international exposure. Whether he wins this or not, the time he has spent on Rock Star can only help him in his career. The future of Supernova as a band is not written in stone to begin with; Supernova is already enmeshed in one legal battle, a lawsuit pending regarding its name. Another Supernova, founded in 1989 in Costa Mesa, California are currently battling to retain sole rights. Someone within the Mark Burnett Productions group apparently neglected to check out the rights to the band's name in the beginning.

I'd like to see Magni gain enough from the experience to amplify, justify and solidify his course. Supernova would be fortunate to have this man with his talent, heart and courage to front them, it would only elevate them.
