Meet Smoosh!

Not yet 15 and already opening for arena bands like Pearl Jam, let us introduce you to rock's most promising sister act, Smoosh

Inspired by their hometown of Seattle and mentored by some of the Northwest's coolest bands, the girls of Smoosh are anything but ordinary. On this summer day, when most kids their age would be glued to a video game or outside playing, 14-year-old Asya and 12-year-old Chloe are hard at work -- they're scheduled to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live later in the evening and have to sound-check as soon as they get into LA. The girls are understandably tired, having just come off a tour of Europe with The Eels, but this is nothing new in the world of Smoosh. In fact, Chloe and Asya have juggled touring with normal kid life for years.

Smoosh first formed in 2000 when Chloe, who took up the drums, and Asya, who's always played piano, figured out that they could construct actual songs. Encouraged by Chloe's drum teacher, Jason McGerr (now the drummer for Death Cab for Cutie), the two recorded their first album, She Like Electric, and released it on a small indie label in 2004. Needless to say, once people got wind of their age, it didn't take long for the rock world to notice the girls' ridiculously catchy pop sounds. In no time, Smoosh found itself opening for bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Go! Team and even Pearl Jam.

So are Chloe and Asya the coolest kids in their Seattle school? Probably, even if they don't want to admit it. "I don't really talk about the band so kids in school just treat me like a normal person," says Asya. "They're supportive and stuff, but it's not like I’m like a pop star or anything." Besides, the girls haven't yet accomplished all they set out to do -- there are still more bands to tour with! "I would love to open up for Sigur Ros, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Bloc Party," Asya adds. "Or Coldplay. That'd never happen but I'd die to open for them."

Seeing what Smoosh has accomplished thus far, we wouldn't be surprised if the girls were playing Wembley Stadium with U2 in a few years, but in the meantime, the girls are all about spreading the word on their new album, Free to Stay (out now), and maybe even slowing down for a bit. "We're going to Australia, Chicago and New York, but then we're pretty much free for the rest of the summer," says Chloe. "We've been on [so many] planes and cars and stuff, I just want to be at home relaxing." As for Asy's summer plans? "I want to go swimming," she says, "but it's never warm enough to do that in Seattle."

One sport you can enjoy anywhere? Bowling! Watch the Smoosh girls (along with nine-year-old lil' sis, Maia) battle the gutter before they hit the stage.
