The Audreys

They've outgrown the pub and outsold Coldplay. What's next for the Audreys? Specifically, a gig at The Gov tonight.

Ask the Audreys to name a significant Adelaide place in the band's development and there's no hesitation. In the two years since the band's second gig, the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Thebarton has been a foundation that this folky, pop five-piece is happy to admit it has outgrown.

"Our last gig at the Wheatsheaf was so full they ran out of beer glasses,'' Taasha Coates, the Audreys' frontwoman, says. Since that last Wheatsheaf gig in April, the band has spent more time overseas than in Australia.

Then, on returning home, the members barely had time to unpack their bags before they were on the road again for a national tour. The Audreys are Coates, Tristan Goodall, Mikey G, Lyndon Gray and Toby Lang, who is absent from our interview so he can enjoy some time at home in Melbourne before the next phase of the tour starts.

Even though the band plays folk/country-style instruments (banjo, double bass, violin), its sound also embraces earthy pop and even extends to a cover of the INXS track Don't Change. The diversity heard on the Audreys' debut album, Between Last Night and Us, has seen them enjoy airplay on stations from Triple J and Nova to Radio National.

"It's blown me away really. Acts are being embraced across the board. People aren't so fussed about the genre. They just like good music,'' Mikey G says.

On their recent overseas tour, the band set off through the UK and Europe, even playing in Russia before ending the tour in Canada. One of the highlights of the trip was a performance in a shop in France. "We thought 'Yeah, a little in-store. You set up in the corner and play a few tunes','' Mikey G says.

"It was packed,'' Coates says.

"And they bought so many copies of our album after our performance that we got into No 4 in the store charts, above Coldplay. I'm sure people were going `Who?' - it was bizarre.''

* Between Last Night and Us (ABC Music/Warner) out now. The Audreys play at the Governor Hindmarsh tonight.
