So - here's the deal. My friend and I are putting together a twenty minute film to put into a local festival. The film is going to be pretty deep as far as we're concerned. The main character's name is Jude, and the short film is going to be playing off of the redundancy of life, and how everything feels so boring and ordinary. Since it's only twenty minutes we cannot fit much into the movie, but here's the scene outline.

Opening credits on a blank background with just Jude's voice as he writes in a journal. Jude reads the journal out loud and describes his bland day just like any other day, except for the fact that he got in a big argument with his best friend (and coincidentally, his only friend) and they are not speaking at the moment.

Dream sequence. Jude sees himself in a massive sea of people who are all standing, staring blankly forward. Everyone in the crowd is wearing a green shirt, except for Jude. He is different because he is wearing a blue shirt (and a giant pair of headphones). Suddenly he pulls up his shirt to reveal the fact that he is, in fact, wearing a green shirt underneath. Cue "Don't Panic" by Coldplay intro.

In the real world, Jude's eyes shoot open. "Don't Panic" is still playing. He sits up out of bed and sees that he still has on the pair of headphones, and that he is wearing a green shirt. The door to his room explodes open and his dad barges in. Jude removes the headphones (Don't Panic stops). The dad starts yelling at Jude for waking up late. Soon after the dad starts yelling though, Jude "zones out" and the father's voice is replaced with "Don't Panic" where the song left off. "Don't Panic" continues to play as Jude goes through his morning routine.

Jude gets in his car and drives to go pick up his best friend Tyler for work. The two aren't speaking, and Jude commentates on this in his head as he drives over. After Jude picks up Tyler, he turns on "Karma Police" by Radiohead to avoid any awkward confrontation in the car. The two ride in complete silence. Humorous stoplight scene.

They go to work as door-to-door salesmen, selling plastic name-cards. "We've Got a File on You" by Blur plays through a series of failed attempts at getting anyone to buy something from him.

MISSING SCENE.

At the end of their long day, the two meet back at Jude's car, where he breaks the silence and announces that they need to go to the mall so Jude can pick something up for his brother's birthday. Tyler doesn't really reply.

When they arrive at the mall parking deck, they get in the elevator with Lounge Music playing. A man gets on the elevator with the two of them, and somehow draws them both into a discussion about a random social topic. The rest of the scene plays out with the two of them "settling" their differences in the elevator while people pour on and off at each stop. Eventually, the two have a skirmish of sorts in the elevator.

Next scene is at a Starbucks. Both men sit and are disheveled and look a mess from the tuffle in the elevator. They sip their fancy drinks and have a conversation about how they're both glad that they've got each other. Really build up the whole "best friends" idea. They slip into a discussion about what constitutes a friendship and what kind of desires they each want for the friendship.

Final scene ends with Jude dropping Tyler off at his house. They have a final few words, but leave off on a very positive note. Jude returns to his house, brushes by his parents and goes straight to his room. "Same" by Snow Patrol starts as Jude thinks out loud while writing his journal for the day. It's very short, sweet, and to the point about his friendship with Tyler. He has another dream in the same setting as the first - except this time, everyone is dressed in green except for him AND Tyler, who both wear blue.

Cut to shot of Jude's eyes springing open the next morning, wearing the BLUE shirt, the headphones, and this time wearing a smile on his face. Cut to credits along with song's timing.

The basic idea here is to establish via the scenes (and I didn't give a lot of detail about ongoings within the scenes) that 1) life is repetitive only if you allow it to be... 2) friendship is selfish unless both people make it different... and 3) we just want a kick-ass song lineup.

"Don't Panic" - Coldplay

"We've Got A File on You" - Blur

"Jesusland" - Ben Folds

"Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd

"Same" - Snow Patrol
