It sounds like a joke, or something a Jewish momma would serve as a cure for colds. But the Chicken Noodle Soup is, in fact, a new hip-hop song and dance craze sweeping the US.

Now it is set to hit the streets, dancefloors and - brace yourselves - the ringtones of Britain.

The bizarre phenomenon originated when two Harlem teenagers, Troy 'Webstar' Ryan and Bianca 'Young B' Dupree, recorded an infectious track about eating Chicken Noodle Soup "wit' a soda on the side".

The dance itself was first sighted at Harlem's Cherry Lounge nightspot before it swept New York and the rest of the States.

Featuring wiggling finger movements, flapping elbows and side-swinging legs, it has been lapped up by thousands of teens - 8,000 of whom have since recorded their own home-grown versions for download on YouTube.

Now UK-based Island Records plan to release the track on 18 December.

THE SOUP STEP

1 Let It Rain

Extend your arms, bend them and wiggle your fingers like falling rain.

2 Clear It Out

As your hands reach your chin, swing the arms out breaststroke style.

3 Let's Get It

The freestyle position - individualise your routine.

4 Chicken Noodle Soup

Move your legs side-to-side. Move the arms in a rowing motion.

5 Soda on the side

Shift weight to one side, and cup right or left hand as if holding a soda bottle.
