Residents Help Pull Dead From Rubble Left By Storms

Featured Replies

My area makes national news again. The city where i work at got by a couple tornados and its been all over the national news. It took me almost 2 hours to get to work.

LADY LAKE, Fla. -- Disaster crews with dogs went from one pile of debris to another in a search for bodies Friday after powerful storms, including at least one tornado, smashed hundreds of homes across central Florida and killed 19 people or more.

It was the deadliest combination of thunderstorms and tornados to hit Florida in nearly a decade, cutting a 40-mile swath of destruction across four counties just before daybreak, terrorizing residents of one of the nation's biggest retirement communities, and leaving trees and fields littered with clothes, furniture and splintered lumber.

Residents help pull the dead from the ruins.

"It was scary, really scary," said Patrick Smith, who lives in the Paisley area, where at least 13 deaths were reported. He said he saw a weather alert on television, grabbed his wife and "went straight to the floor." After the storm passed, he pulled the bodies of a man and his 9- or 10-year-old son from a neighboring house.

Florida's emergency management chief, Craig Fugate, said it could take several days to determine the exact number of dead, and the main priority was finding survivors who may be trapped.

Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency in four counties, but the worst damage was reported where the twister touched down in northern Lake County and eastern Volusia County. In typical tornado fashion, the storm hopscotched across the landscape, demolishing some homes and leaving others virtually untouched.

Poor Florida, they make it through hurricane season , think they're home free for a few months and then this. The pics looked bad on the news. :(

^ I was just making this observation the other night... how all these natural disasters seem to be taking place here in the US.... maybe its a sign! :uhoh:

It would appear that Mother Nature isn't to fond of Florida either.

why do you take everything i say so literal??? always lookin to make an argument I suppose lol

obviously shit like this happens all the time all over the world perhaps..... but you don't tend to hear about them just about every freakin' day... and the fact that the number of natural disasters in the United States has escalated in recent years is astounding..... to me at least. I don't think I can remember this many natural disasters ever occuring in my lifetime... which is why we 'adults' were discussing it..... nothing more... nothing less.

You're always are willing to argue;) I guess you dont understand sarcasm...such a pitty. I find it is you who is taking things to literal...

Yes the adults were discussing this situation...so go back to not paying attention and let the grown ups talk, I'd hate for things to get too real for you, then you might realize the world isnt a giant fairy tale and you're childhood would be ruined.

 right. thank God you entered my life.... I'd be soooo lost without you.

hallelujah!!

anyways the funeral for my friend who died in the tornado is tomorrow. Im not sure if ill go

you should go. He was your friend................ I didn't get to go to my friend's funeral once backin '95..... its haunted me ever since. I didn't go because I didn't have a ride then.... but I felt so guilty about not going... we were about your age too... a year older I think... but still, too young none the less.

I believe his spirit came to say good bye to me later that night..... it was all too surreal.... but you should go. Even if you just stay for 5 minutes... the point is, if he was your friend..... you should go.

as for the sarcasm...... bah, nevermind.

I didnt go. I cant stand funerals and the fact i'd get fired if i went. I dont think my job would buy another excuse to miss work. I was 3 hours late yesterday because of car trouble.
