Why men are turned off by women who pamper their pets

Her pampered pooches are as familiar an accessory as her oversize sunglasses.

 

But there is bad news for socialite Paris Hilton if she wants to stand any chance of finding long-lasting romance.

 

According to a new survey, over-indulged pets can spell disaster for singletons desperate to meet Mr (or Mrs Right).

In an online survey, one in four men revealed they were turned off by partners who pampered their animals and lavished more than £100 a week on care and accessories.

A quarter of men claimed they would not date a woman with two or more cats a third of women said they would avoid men who let cats sleep on their pillows.

Unsurprisingly, 48 per cent of women were repelled by men who owned spiders.

And most worryingly of all, a quarter of the 2,000 people surveyed said that, if forced too, they would choose their pet over their partner.

The questionnaire was conducted by market research company YouGov and dating agency Parship.

Speaking to The Guardian, Victoria Lukats, a psychiatrist at Sussex Partnership NHS trust in Brighton, who was involved in the survey, said: "The image of Paris Hilton and her pampered pets is one that seems to send most men running for the hills."

In recent months, Paris has frequently been seen with one of her pets tucked under her arm.

Her most famous pooch Chihuahua Tinkerbell sparked a craze for dinky size dogs - and even a few headlines after the heiress shelled out $5,000 to get the mutt back after she went missing.

She was also spotted giving her pet a bottle of Bling H20, a "gourmet water" which comes at £30 a pop.

As well as Tinkerbell, her menagerie includes a ferret, a goat, a cockatoo, another dog and a kinkajou monkey named Baby Luv.
