Britons are getting on their bike at holiday time, spending £120million on cycling breaks in the past year.

Some tour operators have reported a 30 per cent rise in bookings for cycle holidays since 2005.

 

Last year, 450,000 Britons took to the saddle for a break.

 

A further 2.25million holidaymakers hired a bike to spend the day sightseeing.

 

Experts put the rise down to an increased awareness of health and fitness issues and the growing popularity of events such as the Tour de France.

 

Environmental concerns surrounding car use, such as carbon emissions, and a rise in eco-friendly travel are also factors.

 

Research suggests 12 per cent of Britons would consider booking a cycling holiday in the future.

 

Among 15 to 24-year-olds this increased to 22 per cent - the highest level for any age group.

 

Richard Cope, of market analysts Mintel who conducted the study, said: "The growth of independent travel is creating a new breed of holidaymaker, who is resourceful, adventurous and hungry for a taste of authenticity away from the crowds.

 

"Cycling holidays appeal to families, sightseers and those simply seeking relaxation and escape."
