She held his hand as she spent 40 minutes biding an emotional farewell.

But then she had an urgent call from police telling her Mr Dennison was in custody in Nottingham.

Mrs Partington said her son has mental health problems and had gone missing days before the body was found.

She said: "I went to the chapel of rest. I held his hand and kissed his head. I would have sworn he was my son."

But she still has not seen her son as he was bailed by police and disappeared again.

Officers have since found out the true identity of the dead man. He was 37 and had been living rough. His sister, who lives locally, has been told.

A police source said the similarities between the men were remarkable, even down to having the same body markings.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
