I have to do a report on French pop music, so it would be really helpful to get an idea of what is played on radio there. I have no clue if there are specific stations for certain genres like there are in the US. So, what is the pop music scene like in France, and does pop music get crammed down a person's throat like in the US?

 

Oooh, ooh, also, also, also...how do you feel about this music? Do you like it? Why do you think this music becomes so popular? Is it how the music sounds? Since there are American musicians on the singles chart I am looking at, does language play a role at all?

 

Even if you don't live in France and have just visited and know what it's like, that would be great.

About the specific genres, well, all stations are quite dedicated to crap, which is why I don't listen to radio at all. But actually, you have, for example :

- NRJ : the most popular station, so it's all rubbish. Quite the French radio version of MTV

- Skyrock : bad rap and bad U.S. Hip-Hop

- Fun Radio : pop pop pop, only commercial stuff

- Ouï FM : basically rock, but just the commercial songs

- Le Mouv' : about the same, still, more independant

- Europe 2 : Pop-rock, quite commercial, but some old stuff sometimes

- RTL 2 : Pop-rock, only classics and some new and interesting stuff

- RMC : all that's been famous in the two last decades

- Nostalgie, France Bleu : old stuff (sometimes very old), almost only French.

- RTL, Europe 1, France Info, France Inter : News and politics

+ the inevitable classical music stations (that I like actually)

 

 

About the language, I'd say French people (in general) are too stupid to listen to the lyrics, so if you stick to silly things such as "I love you but don't me, so I suffer" or "I like how you move your body" or "I need to live because I'm alive" or even "I don't like the weather today", you'll make money in France, whatever the language is. They don't like instrumental music, though. A song must also be exactly 3 minutes long, and thaespeaker will chat over the beginning and end of the song, so don't put interesting stuff there.

 

 

Unless you really like listening to some specific stations between 2 and 5 in the morning, you'll never hear alternative or progressive, or even creative stuff. Ad the whole day you have loads of advertising for supermarkets and insurance companies.

 

Well this is how I see French Radio (and French TV is almost worse...), but I'm a rather cynical person, so refer to someone else for a more objective point of view ^^.
