'Drug mix-up' theory for TV death

Featured Replies

The actress whose body was found in the home she shared with a CBBC host may have taken the wrong medication before she died, her fiance's mother has said.

After Natasha Collins' death in London, her partner Mark Speight was arrested on suspicion of murder and supplying cocaine, which he vehemently denied.

And he would never have "harmed Tash", Mr Speight's mother Jacqueline said.

A mix-up with drugs prescribed for a medical condition may have led to the 31-year-old's death, she added.

Talking to reporters outside her home in Wolverhampton, Mrs Speight said the couple had been together "for quite a while".

"As far as I know, everything was OK between them," she said.

Asked for her reaction to the tragedy, she replied: "I'm in absolute shock. I was only with them at Christmas. They both seemed fine and very happy."

She added: "There is no way on earth that Mark would do anything to harm Tash."

Car accident

Mr Speight is known as one of the faces of BBC children's TV, particularly the SMart programme, which he has presented since 1995.

He had worked with Ms Collins, who was also a model, on children's series See It Saw It.

She was planning to set up her own production company with compensation she received after a car accident seven years ago.

On Friday a statement was issued on behalf of Ms Collins' mother, whose first name was not given.

"We are all absolutely distraught over the death of Natasha," it read. "She was our loving, caring daughter who was always full of life.

"This is a very emotional time for us as a family. We ask simply to be allowed to grieve."

A spokeswoman for Mr Speight said the presenter had found Ms Collins' body in the bathroom of their home in St John's Wood "and immediately called an ambulance and the police".

"Mark was the only other person present in the flat and has therefore been questioned by police as a matter of course.

"He is assisting police with their enquiries and had nothing to do with Natasha's death," she said, before adding: "Mark is absolutely distraught."

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said a suspected drug overdose was one line of inquiry which was being considered.

Further details of the circumstances leading up to Ms Collins' death are unlikely to emerge before a post-mortem is conducted, and this is expected to be on Monday.

Family plea to missing presenter

Mark Speight was last seen on Monday afternoon

The family of missing TV presenter Mark Speight have urged him to get in touch amid fears for his welfare.

Speight's fiancee Natasha Collins, 31, was found dead in a bath at their flat in St John's Wood, north London, on 3 January after she had taken drugs.

Speight, 42, was last seen walking along Chamberlayne Road, Kensal Rise, north-west London, on Monday afternoon.

In a statement both families said they were "deeply concerned" for Speight who was in a "fragile state of mind".

'Deeply worried'

Ms Collins' mother Carmen, 57, stood with family spokeswoman Amanda Stocks outside her home as the appeal was read.

The statement said: "Mark has not been seen since 1pm yesterday [Monday] and because of his fragile state of mind both Mark's family and Natasha's family as well as all of his friends are deeply worried.

"We notified police because of our concerns and we just want to know he is safe. We would urge Mark, if he hears this appeal, to get in touch."

After the statement Mrs Collins urged Speight to "please get in touch with us".

The family informed police after he failed to turn up for a meeting with a friend in Covent Garden at 1530 BST.

Police said Speight was dropped off at Wood Green station, north London, on Monday morning and was later seen walking towards Chelmsford Square in Kensal Rise at about 1315 BST.

Speight, who is 6ft, was wearing a brown suit jacket with dark jeans and a brown flat cap.

After his fiancee's death Speight, who fronted BBC children's show SMart, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and supplying Class A drugs but no charges were brought.

In February he announced he was quitting SMart as his "tragic loss" had left him unable to continue.

Speight, originally from Wolverhampton, had been living with Mrs Collins in Norfolk Avenue, Enfield, north London, following the death.

TV presenter found dead

MISSING TV star Mark Speight was found dead today at a North London rail station, police said. Speight, 42, vanished last Monday - six days after an inquest into the cocaine-binge death of his actress fiance Natasha Collins, 31. Police launched a massive hunt for the former presenter of Children’s BBC art show SMart.

Unexplained

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “At 10am we were advised that the body of a male person was discovered at Paddington rail station. “Officers are investigating the identity and circumstances surrounding the death which is being treated as unexplained.” Speight was last captured on camera entering Queen’s Park tube station in north-west London at 2.25pm last Monday afternoon. He was seen 22 minutes later boarding a southbound Bakerloo Line train heading towards the centre of the capital.

Speight was reported missing after failing to keep an appointment to meet his Natasha’s mother Carmen, 57, for coffee in Covent Garden at 3.30pm the same day. Hours before his body was discovered, his dad made an emotional plea for him to get in touch. Oliver Speight said in a statement: “Mark, wherever you are or whatever you are doing to give yourself time to deal with your own personal grief, we totally understand but we need you to get in touch. “Please don’t give up on us because we are not giving up on you.”

Natasha died in a scalding bath at their £625,000 penthouse flat in St John's Wood, North London, in January after a marathon drug session. An inquest in Westminster heard the couple had spent two days partying, drinking heavily and snorting cocaine before Natasha woke in the middle of the night to take a bath. She left a hot tap running and died of horrendous burns while Speight slept.

Coroner Paul Knapman recorded a verdict of misadventure
