My Viva la Vida Listens : The Journey to Viva la Vida Appreciation

Featured Replies

1st listen : Im going to hear the cd for the first time and because of many rave reviews and people switching their favorite coldplay album to this album I certainly had high expectations

I turned on the stereo, played the button then started to listen to the whole album for 45 minutes. Personally I liked all the songs so far and its still in the average zone. The songs that only put me off so far are CHinese Sleep Chant and Reign of Love , I guess it hasnt grown on me yet. Overall,

The outlook of the album so far is in the middle for me, I noticed also was that the album has an artistic theme to it, many unexpected melodies and beats that caught me off guard since I already heard their old songs, and this has a unique sound.

Ā

As my first impression i would rate it a 3/5

The song that caught my attention : Yes

Ā

Ill keep on posting till it really grows on me!

This will be interesting to see how it grows on you. It has done on everyone else. With me it was songs like Yes and CoL that grew on me.

My opinion of albums is constantly fluxuating, but no more so than my first week of listening. In the car on the way home, it was solid.

Ā

Second listen with head phones... decent but underwhelming, somewhat dissapointing.

Ā

3rd and 4th listens... Amazing, as good as AROBTTH.

Ā

5th and 6th listens...Solid, not their best, but a variety of fresh ideas and flavors. Pretty good....

Ā

and so on and so on.....I even typed like a 3 page, song by song review called "2nd impressions of VLV" after listening to it a couple times, but by now I disagree with a lot of what I typed. I always say that to truly evaluate an album you need to listen to it at least three times, with headphones, in a quiet environment. If you can sing along with each song, you've heard enough to evaluate it.

So how'd you finally get it?

Ā

Don't worry, my first listen I was somewhat disappointed and I thought it was just average. Give it a few more times thru (it really is best played as a whole album) and maybe look up the lyrics while you listen. Within a week you'll probably love it!:D

They'll grow on you. It took me quite a while to like Reign of Love, but now it's one of my favorites on the album. And CSC is just brilliant guitar work really. Forget about the lyrics, just try to appreciate Jonny's wonderful soundscapes.

I knew you'd love it!:D

Think of reign of love as a relaxing intermission, like a parachutes. It's foolish to compare how good it is compared to other tracks. Just soak in the rolling piano and the ringing, reverberated backdrop.

As for CSC, this track has become one of my favorites on the album (lately I've been skipping straight past yes to hear just it...) What I love about it is how the fact it's a seemingly straight forward shoegazer rock tune separates it from the complicated songs surrounding it. I mean, you have 42, split into three very different parts. Yes, with it's strings, and confusing sliding guitar, and on the other side...Viva la vida with it's disconnected bridges and string arrangements.

Ā

It's because of this that I find Chinese sleep chant so relaxing, because it's mainly just simple, straight forward guitar chords with a simple melody, nice harmony and quick 4/4 drum beat. It's very easy to listen to IMO, plus it has an awesome solo. but it's cool to think that coldplay be so creative with their songs that a no-frills guitar tune could stand out like a sore-thumb.
