Quick question...

Is the violin an instrument that can be learned by ear? Or does it require a lot of theory (more so than piano, drums, guitar, etc etc...)?

I can play all the mentioned instruments by ear so yeah... I was wondering if I could pull it off with the violin too...?

I think if you can play piano, drums, and guitar by ear, you can probably figure out how to do violin by ear. You seem pretty musically smart, evidently.

Then again I have no fucking clue what I'm talking about, so you may want to take that with a grain of salt...

Like any instrument, it will probably be very difficult to learn complicated music by ear at first. But if you learn some theory early, over time you will be able to use your ear more and more.

^He sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Plus he's in a band, so I would pay more attention to him.

I think you will be able to learn to play some songs by ear BUT i don't think it's easy to get the technique right. And when the technique isn't right your hands get tired easily and all your muscles get sore and after that playing isn't easy at all.

It'd be the best if you took classes for a short period of time (a year?) just to get the technique right. I also understand that it's not always possible to take classes but it would definitely help a lot!

I would say that it would be more complicated to learn violin by ear just due to the use of the bow, but if you can learn guitar by ear, I don't see why you can't learn violin by ear. :)

Cheers everyone! Yeah I've been asking around and the general consensus has been that it's important to learn technique first. I have a lot of friends that play violin that could probably help me so I think I'm gonna try it! All I need is a violin now... haha.
