:nice: I love how people periodically discover the wayback machine around here and then seem to forget it for next time.

And yes, there's lots of great stuff if you're persistent enough. I love Chris' long rambling blogs in the early days back when he tried to write a couple. Guess there's a reason he doesn't anymore.

:stunned:thanks so much for finding these!!!!!!

I've always wanted to see the older website!!!!!!!

From 09.10.00 : Phil on writing "In My Place" and Stress:

the boys played me a couple of the new songs the other day. i was not disappointed. they're coming on so fast as a band now. there's so much more confidence, more ability and more adventurousness. the two songs that i heard are called 'In My Place'and 'Animals'. In My Place i have mentioned in this

journal before. it's such a fucking good tune. i spend all my days just whistling jonny's guitar part on it.

it's really epic sounding but at the same time quite intimate and personal. it's all based around a

mellatron riff that chris came up with but will has put this massive beat behind it and guy's doing one of

his power basslines.

then just last friday chris came up with another keyboard riff that he played to me on pump organ over

the phone. the boys then had their first rehearsal together for months on Monday; by the end of the day

they had Animals. it's as good as In My Place if not better.

hearing the new songs has put a bit of a new slant on things for me. whereas before i felt like i was on

this mission to take the songs on Parachutes to as many people around the world as possible now i feel differently. the potential of this band is just frightening. but even more scary is the toll that this

summer's events and promotional activities have threatened to take on the band and, to be honest, me.

i'm not sure if the band will ever actually read this entry or not so i won't go into details but suffice to

say that this year has seen not only our happiest days but also our darkest. the band have felt enormous

pressure to perform well, to justify the hype, to be on good form for interviews, to look good in the

photographs. undoubtedly most of this pressure they have exerted on themselves but nonetheless it has been there and they have suffered for it. jonny getting ill was just one of the more tangible aspects.

so i guess my point is that my job is not to work them into the ground trying to achieve gold status in

venezuela and japan. it's not to make sure that we get as much press around Trouble as possible. it's to look after them and make sure they stay happy and healthy and together as a band. then they can fulfil the

potential that they are only just beginning to show.

well we are in iceland and about to play but before we do we as a band wanted to tell you what's going on and what might go on. there is so much nonsense talked about us these days which is a shame. i know coldplay talk is pretty irrelevant on world terms, but i got told that some people who were into the band early on were getting annoyed and think that we have gone to live in cloud cuckoo land. so whilst we know that any changes we make and any success we have or don't have will change opinions of us, we feel it necessary to explain some stuff.

it annoys me that we have consciously done everything to avoid being in adverts and bad films, and selling out and all that, and yet there are some people saying we do things just for the money.

we treat the bands that tour with us not bad at all. the bands that support us generally seem pretty happy, and we have loved being with alfie and grandaddy and the like; the other day ron sexsmith played with us in sydney and he was amazing.

i acknowledge that we have turned up the volume a bit and are doing different things live. this is because we are FULL OF LIFE at the moment and have never had so much fun onstage or felt happier. in march i couldn't sing and couldn't accept the fact that anyone liked us, but then amazing things happened and now we are very excited.

i fully acknowledge that my hair is a bit short; i saw a picture the other day and there was no hair in sight so i am determined to grow it a bit and look like fabio again. these are the risks you take when you buy your own clippers, and i don't recommend it as before you know it you have gone loopy.

i like all the rumours about who we are or are not going out with, because they confirm that we are the sexiest band in the world.

we are going into the studio on october the fourth and will make the best and most passionate album you have ever heard

so don't worry about us. we will probably go quiet for a bit while we're recording so thanks again for looking out for us, and please listen to WAR by u2 as it is amazing,or go and see MUSE live as they are on fire.

thanks for letting us get away with this job

i have to go as julia roberts is coming for lunch

this is obviously not true

love chris and guy jon and will

in my place is from 2000? oh how weird
Yeah, they toured many of the songs on AROBTTH for a couple of years before they ever recorded them. Personally I think it's part of why that album is so good- they got a chance to really find out what worked before it was time for the definitive version.

hello i just got taught how to write the journal and i thought i should as i dont have to do very much promo at the moment because of being like a diva.we are in usa on a big fat tour which goes everywhere and it is good considering that two months ago we had no drive or voice or enthusiasm left. but now we are like a slick rock machine and we have no fear. what got us back in buisness i thin k was a rest, some singing lessons and a whole bunch of new songs that are all i think about i think i must have drawn lists of the sequence of our next album at least 100 times. but it is exciting being in our band again and that is good . i just read "on the road' by jack kerouac which you should read when youre alot younger than me really but it gave me a massive boost in energy as did being able to sing again and having everybody else put their parts on some of the new songs. whenever we have a break all i do and all i want to do is sit and try and get new songs.i think there are about 16 good ones (out of about 50 but since i was twelve there were always more thrown awaythan kept ) and the rest of the band COLDPLAY have worked their magic on about 7 of them and these are the best. once jon gets some riffs or guy or will do something the original idea becomes double good and that i think is what makes me overwhelmed. i always moan and groan about certain shit but i am a lucky fucker to be here with them and it all seems to work again. this is strangely cathartic this diary buisness so i should be careful about what i say.is anybody even interested? i'll try and be more bridget jones. this is what is going on in my head today. make the most of every moment as there is some messed up stuff going on, especially that we've noticed since we came here. george w bush it seems to me is not that great and is somewhat answerable to oil companies which i think means the environment will get no help. plus all the missile defence ideas and the continuing availability of arms and the fucked up judicial system it is TERRIBLE. i think guys like the beastie boys and u2 and rage and all them are amazing because even though theyre only bands they all try and make a difference. i expect this is all coming out wrong but there is so much shit going on that i feel lucky to be alive and free. this guy just got out of prison after 30 years after they realised he was innocent and nobody even said sorry and so i makes you realise to get on with things now . i think the reason all this stuff has suddenly hit me is because in the last year i met so many big names and faces some cool some not and it hit home that EVERYBODY even presidents and generals and popstars are all fallible human beings. this is frightening because the idea that some people are superhuman is comforting to those that are not. so what is my point ? i am just saying to whoever has got this far in this rambling nonsense (that was supposed to be a straghtforward "today we played bristol it was ok.." type tour diary) that i feel like life has to be attacked before something goes really wrong. and because being in a band is such a luxury job i feel both guilty and extremely overjoyed, and determined to do something useful, even if it is such a small thing as trying to make records that do something to people rather than just spending all our royalties on coke.

sorry if this all sounds bullshit ; anyway i hope everyone on this COLDPLAY website is ok.

love chris

p.s i read this back it is an english teachers nightmare

the audiences at our concerts have so far been amazing so thanks if you were one of them.

every time i think that it might be an idea to write a journal entry, because i met such and such, or because we played a good or bad gig, or because there is some new coldplay song, i am put off by the fact that it is all pretty irrelevant really, in the grand scheme of things. there are important elections going on, and ridiculous ideas being touted (missile defence systems etc), and people being severely maltreated by other people, and all sorts of depressing yet stupidly important stuff. although we bands love to moan about the press, at least they (most of the time) can tell you what's going on where. my friend seth sent me an article the other day relating the actions of the taliban in afghanistan, and how they have suggested that non-muslims wear a marker to show their religion, just as the jews had to do under the nazis. time magazine recently ran a story about child killers (i.e. children who have killed, not been killed), which highlighted the absurdity of guns being able to get into the hands of children in some places.

so is there any point in some singer doing a diary? maybe; perhaps it is an idea to just ignore all this shit sometimes, and write about how interesting our soundcheck was, because for a very few people that might actually be a good thing to read; escapism in a way i suppose, in the same way (but to a much lesser degree) that music and films and all forms of entertainment are.

we are in texas, the concerts are good, i met the bad guy from karate kid (true), and some new coldplay songs rule. of great pleasure to us was the attendance of our gig in dallas by wayne coyne from the flaming lips, and jim ward our good friend who was?is? the guitarist and keyboardist and composer of songs in at-the-drive-in. in fact jim and mrs ward have been with us a few days, and they are truly great.

it is incredible to me how many different places we have now been where people know the words to our songs. you know, you start a song on your own in a room, and then you take it to jon or will or guy, and they do something with it, and then a bit of time later and 3000 texans are there telling you what was or wasn't yellow. i mean it's great but it makes me want to improve everything no end, so that nobody has to waste their ear-time on shit when they listen to or see us. i mean life is short and i don't want to waste people's time, and hence feel highly driven. when you see the flaming lips live, or hear the boatman's call by nick cave, or watch life is beautiful by roberto begnini, it is pure undiluted quality time, and that is what we must be. i'm sorry to anyone who has already felt cheated by our record or concert or whatever. i get highly pissed off if i watch a rubbish film or have to sit and listen to lift music or hotel lobby music for too long, because there is better stuff to be filling your head with. the time we waste on nonsense is ridiculous; i think john told you about what happened at customs the other day. it is bizarre how we often have no individual choice at all; in everything from having to listen to piped music to being told you can't do what you want with your own body. i'm headed down a tricky path here so i'll stop with this; i mean you have to have laws and rules to stop people hurting each other don't you, and you have to have inoffensive music in lifts. anyway i'm basically saying in this journal entry that i'm confused as hell.

thanks for being on our website, it's going to be double good soon.

From 30.06.01 Jonny on Chris losing his voice and generally saying the most he's ever come up with in public when not telling a story about a sheep:

End of Ameican Tour

Hello everybody, it may have been a long time coming, but finally I have got a computer and have plucked up the courage to do a journal entry. It is 3:30 am and I suddenly got the urge to write something on the website.

First, thanks to everybody who came to see us and support us and we hope that you enjoyed seeing us. We feel like this has been our best tour yet, but it has been a learning experience for us; it is the first time we have played some all seater venues and we've also played our biggest ever headline gig. We'd really appreciate your opinions on those gigs because it will help us to make an informed choice of venues in future.

I'm also writing this to apologise to anyyone who planned to go to the Salt Lake City gig to see us or Grandaddy. Chris's voice was about to give and having narrowly avoided cancelling Dallas, Austin and Denver we were forced into cancelling Salt Lake to give him a rest and so be able to finish the tour. Excuses aside, we are genuinely sorry for pulling out and we will fix all the future tour schedules to try and make sure it never happens again.

I had some other stuff to say, but I'm nackered so I'm going to bed so thanks, sorry and good night

Jonny

A MESSAGE

I don't think I appreciated the full impact of the recent events in America until I sat down and tried to collect my thoughts and write something on the website. By now, nearly everyone in the world will have seen the footage of the catastrophic events that took place in New York, Washington and Pittsburgh and these are images which will stay in the minds of the people of the world for ever. Images which wouldn't look out of place in a Hollywood disaster movie, and ones that no one ever thought they would see in real life. Watching the TV as I write this, the speculation is that 20,000 people lost their lives, people from all around the world who knew nothing of the grievances the terrorists had with the West, who didn't understand the nature of and the reasoning behind the conflict, but who were the target of these attrocious acts of terrorism. On a global scale, the full impact of these events won't be realised for years to come, but what is immediately obvious is the impact on the friends and families of the innocent people who lost their lives. As a band , our thoughts, hearts and prayers go out to absolutely everyone who was involved or had friends or family involved in the tradgedy. And also wishes of a speedy rescue mission for the sake of those still alive under the rubble and for those families who still have loved ones unaccounted for. New York has always been a special place for our band as it has for many bands, it is also a place in which we have many friends as I'm sure many of you reading this will, once again our hearts, minds and prayers go out to all of them. Whatever the outcome of the next few weeks be certain that these events have changed the modern world forever, and the ease with which they were able to take place is perhaps the most scary thought of all. It has made it clear in my mind that all it takes is a few people to create such massive destruction and pain and suffering, and that life is far too short and unexpected to hold things back, to procrastinate or to not live every day like it could be your last. W.
