Hilarious, Jonathan Ross? It wasn’t for me and my wife, says Andrew Sachs

Andrew Sachs and his wife yesterday accused Jonathan Ross of showing off after he called the Sachsgate affair ‘hilarious’.

 

In an interview, Ross said the notorious incident – in which he and Russell Brand left obscene messages about Mr Sachs’s granddaughter on his answerphone – was ‘intrinsically unimportant’ and ‘fun’.

 

He also failed to express remorse for upsetting the actor and his family by making the calls, broadcast on Radio 2 in October 2008.

Instead, speaking publicly about the scandal for the first time, Ross told The Guardian: ‘Can I be quite honest with you? In a way, the whole experience was fun.’

 

Mr Sachs, 80, and his wife, Melody, said they were puzzled by the comments because of the ‘wonderful letter of apology’ Ross and Brand wrote them shortly after the incident.

Mrs Sachs said: ‘He’s just showing himself up, really. And showing off. I’m surprised that he finds it so entertaining. It wasn’t entertaining for us, anyway.’

 

Mr Sachs added: ‘We accepted their apology and now he seems to be making light of the situation.’

In Ross’s interview, he said: ‘Life can sometimes potter along in the same direction, and then something comes along over which you have no control... it became almost like I was watching it happen to somebody else.

 

'And it was quite entertaining.’ Ross said he planned to disclose ‘hilarious’ details of the affair at a later date.

The Mail on Sunday revealed how Mr Sachs had been upset by the stunt in October 2008.

 

Ross was later suspended for three months without pay.

 

He announced in January he would leave the BBC this summer.
