In a move that does little to dispel the view that they are years behind the rest of Britain, the Isles of Scilly have got their first speed gun.

The device has been put to use on the main St Mary’s Island because the other three have no proper roads. The fastest vehicle to be clocked on the island, which has only 14km (9miles) of roads on it, has so far been a moped doing 34mph in a 60mph zone.

‘There is an element that thinks Scilly isn’t in the UK and the laws of the UK don’t apply here,’ said Sgt Charlie Craig, of Devon and Cornwall Police, which covers the islands. ‘We have a very friendly, very relaxed way of dealing with things, but there are things that are unacceptable and we’ll enforce them.’

Meanwhile, police are using lorries to catch ... lorry drivers. Officers are patrolling motorways in 999-liveried trucks to check that the drivers behave themselves. They are used because the officers could not see into the cabs using their normal Range Rovers.

So far, truckers have been filmed playing video games, watching DVDs and even cooking on small stoves.
