SHELL SUIT IS VOTED THE WORST FASHION CRIME OF THE ’80S

Jimmy Savile struts his stuff in a garish shell suit

WHILE the antics of DCI Gene Hunt have shown that the Eighties are loved by many, it seems there are a few trends that Britons are happy to see the back of.

Top of the fashion hate list is the shell suit. The brightly-coloured, shiny tracksuit has been voted the worst style crime of that era.

More than three quarters of women quizzed said the zip-up sports suits, worn by TV’s Jimmy Savile and Harry Enfield’s Scousers, should be banned.

It beat spandex leggings, the perm, day glow make-up and fingerless lace gloves in a poll of fashion disasters from the decade.

Although the shiny leggings have made a surprise comeback, the perm – seen on Kylie Minogue in her TV Neighbours heyday and footballer Kevin Keegan – thankfully has not.

The poll by Galaxy Counters also found more than a third of women do not want to see the return of another Eighties monstrosity, stirrup trousers.

But in contrast, 32 per cent voted stonewash denim the best trend of the 1980s, followed by Wayfarer-style plastic sunglasses and leg warmers. The research comes after Eighties bands, including Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran, have reunited. Also DCI Hunt’s 1980s police adventures have made BBC’s Ashes To Ashes one of the most-watched dramas.
