James Corden comes out on top after on-stage clash with Sir Patrick Stewart at the Glamour Awards

He might be a veteran of the stage and screen but Sir Patrick Stewart should have kept consulting his script before insulting James Corden last night.

Hundreds of guests at last night's Glamour Awards in London looked on in shock as the critically-acclaimed actor tried to make fun of the portly comedian's weight but then saw his jibes spectacularly backfire.

Celebrities such as Cheryl Cole, Lily Allen, Nicole Ritchie and Denise Van Outen, took in the embarrassing scene as the Star Trek star launched a verbal attack on Corden, who was hosting the glitzy event in Mayfair's Berkeley Square.

Sir Patrick was invited on stage to present the gong for Film Actress of the Year to Avatar's Zoe Saldana.

But instead he took the opportunity to criticise the way Corden was standing.

He told the comedy star not to stand at the back with his hands in his pocket because it made him look like he would rather be somewhere else when people came up to collect their awards.

Then he decided to have a dig at Corden's weight - a big mistake.

He said: 'From where I was sitting, I could see your belly. And that was from right over there at the back of the room. These people down here....'

He then looked at Corden, who said: 'Sorry, I'm waiting for the punchline. Go on. You could see my belly but I can see you dying right now.

As the crowd laughed nervously, Sir Patrick asked them: 'One more, do you want one more?'

In reference to Corden joking earlier in the evening that he fancied Nick Jonas, Sir Patrick said: 'If you fancy the Jonas Brothers, cover your belly.'

As Corden stood smiling in bemusement behind him, Sir Patrick then gave Saldana the award.

And she was quick to jump to Corden's defence, as she said, to a round of applause and cheers: 'For whatever it's worth, I like your belly.'

And as Corden and Sir Patrick argued in the background, she added: 'But I would pay to see Sir Patrick Stewart dying on stage any day.'

After Sir Patrick had left the stage, Corden told the audience, 'I feel bad for people who haven't seen my belly', before he lifted he shirt and rubbed his stomach.

Then, to a burst of applause and laughter, he said to Sir Patrick: 'OK can we get a taxi really quickly please. There's an old man going home.'

Apart from Saldana, many other stars jumped to Corden's defence as the evening went on, including Nowhere Boy actor Aaron Johnson, who won Man of the Year, and remarked: 'I love your belly. That was intense. I didn't know where to look.'

Singer Duffy, who got on stage to present Yoko Ono with the Outstanding Contribution accolade, added: 'James is doing a wonderful job. Highly entertaining.'

Speaking about the incident after the event, Corden said: 'I sound like my mum. I wasn't angry. I found it quite disappointing. You should ask him about it but I'm certain he's left.'
