Safe Removals? Hapless driver gets van stuck fast under low railway bridge

It was a marketing ploy aimed at reassuring families moving home that their belongings were in the safest of hands.

Proudly displaying the words Safe Removals, the owners of this firm were left red-faced after their driver got himself into a rather tight spot.

Happily cruising along a road in south London, the driver of the van came to an unexpected standstill when he attempted to drive under a low railway bridge.

The van became stuck fast and efforts to remove it only made matters worse.

Eventually, with tires squealing, the van lurched backwards - and the roof was torn off.

A crowd of onlookers gathered to gawp at the hapless driver, who eventually handed his keys to a passing builder who managed to free the van.

A witness at the scene, at Brockley Railway Station in south-east London said: 'The driver obviously misjudged the height and thought he could pass under the bridge, but he got stuck.

'What then followed was a game of trying to get out both forward and backwards but the van was stuck fast for a good hour.

'He was burning rubber on the road because it was wedged so tight and he'd ripped the top of the cab.

'A local builder eventually came and reversed it out for him. He didn't look too happy.'
