(New York) Interlock Ignition System For Convicted Drunk Drivers

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - New York State's new Leandra's Law is about to get even tougher on drunk drivers. It's the latest tool to stop intoxicated people from getting behind the wheel.

The second phase of Leandra's Law calls for the mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device, which is designed to keep your car from starting, if you've been drinking. The monitoring system measures the amount of alcohol in your system, after you blow into the mouthpiece.

Ignition Interlock of Erie County Company owner John Fasciana held a demonstration today for members of the local media, using Listerine mouthwash which contains a small amount of alcohol. Authorities say don't worry, the mouth wash giveS off only a small positive reading. You would have to drink an excessive amount to register as being adequately intoxicated.

Fasciana goes on to say the ignition interlock system will be installed in the vehicle of a convicted drunk driver, for a minimum of 6 months. "Well for the short amount of time we're hoping if someone has to have this put in for 6 months, it will teach these people that they mean business, that the State means business, and they will not tolerate anyone driving under the influence."

Leandra's Law will also elevate a DWI charge to a felony. Anyone convicted will serve up to 4-years in prison if they endanger a child's life, 15 years if the child is injured, and 25 years if the child is killed.
