Bad taste Berlusconi: Premier sinks to new low as he jokes about return of Hitler... and boasts girls will marry him for money

Even by Silvio Berlusconi’s standards, it was lacking in taste.

The Italian Prime Minister’s mental stability has been questioned after he made a joke about the return of Adolf Hitler as he addressed a youth rally.

He told young members of his People of Freedom Party: ‘A little after Hitler died his supporters discovered he was in fact still alive.

‘They went to look for him to convince him to come back and he replied: “Yes I will return but on one condition... this time I will be evil, right?”’

The ‘joke’ went down a storm with the cheering crowd of supporters.

Berlusconi, 73, went on to give a lengthy lecture hinting at his sexual prowess.

He told the audience on Sunday that a string of women wanted to marry him because: ‘I’m loaded. I’m a nice guy and they think that as I am older, I will die before them and they will get the lot.’

And he added: ‘Legend has it, I know how to do it.’

Yesterday political opponents called for Berlusconi to say sorry.

Berlusconi's 'babes': Venezuelan showgirl Aida Yespica, left, was named by former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi's wife Veronica Lario in an open letter and Noemi Letizia, 18, allegedy had an 'inappropriate relationship' with him

Fabio Evangelisti, of anti-sleaze party Italy of Values, said: ‘We have sadly grown use to these gaffes, outbursts and offences by Berlusconi but to joke about Hitler is a new embarrassing low.

‘A head of government making a joke like that in such poor taste would not be imaginable from any other country and Berlusconi should now apologise to Israel and the Jewish community in Italy.’

Antonio Di Pietro, a former anti-corruption magistrate and leader of Italy of Values, added: ‘It’s no longer a question of politics but a psychiatric problem with him.’

Berlusconi appeared chubbier than in recent outings when he addressed the rally at the weekend, with his chin noticeably sagging.

His hair looked as though it could have been sprayed on and his forehead had taken on an unusually smooth appearance.

The Italian has previously undergone a hair transplant and there have been regular rumours that he has had plastic surgery.

He disappeared from public view for a month in 2004, emerging to say that he had ‘a service’ and cosmetic surgery around the eyes. But the Italian media speculated that he also had a nip and tuck on his face and neck.

He is also thought to have undergone a nose job at a Swiss clinic after being hit in the face by a small statue at a rally in Milan last year.

And his disappearing wrinkles once led the Il Foglio newspaper to refer to him as looking ‘half-way between Boris Karloff and a baby’.

He was reported to have had two further hair transplants in 2005. His latest remarks come after a string of controversial incidents and comments.

He is being divorced by his long-suffering wife Veronica Lario, 54, following allegations that he had relationships with a teenage lingerie model and escorts.

He once told a female Italian Cabinet Minister he would marry her if he was not already married, and at a previous rally he said: ‘This morning in the hotel I fancied having sex with the maid. She turned to me and said: “But Mr Prime Minister, we only just did it an hour ago”.’

In 2003 he caused outrage by comparing a German MEP to a concentration camp guard and last year he said that U.S. President Barack Obama was ‘well suntanned’.

That year he also left German Chancellor Angela Merkel waiting to greet him at a conference while he made a call on his mobile phone.
