Short story help

Featured Replies

Im thinking of writing a short story to film. There are my ideas so far:

The film is set in a moderate dystopian future, here we are all expected to be 'in touch' at all times. The world is fast paced and there are even government war like propaganda posters around warning to keep your mobile on you for example. Our main character is a sort of a technophobe and in a sense is stuck in the past. The world is loud, and he wants peace and quiet. The occupants in his house are fairly loud and its no better outside. He is trying to concentrate on reading/painting or something when he gets a phone call, he ignores it. Throughout the next few sequences he ignores it again before going to bed. Waking up to find everyone has gone. No cars on the street, no one in his house nothing. I almost want it to be asif the whole world has moved to mars and because he diddnt stay in touch, he was left behind. I guess the gran message in this would be that, we are so dependant on communication technology, that without it, your literally left behind.

I just dont know what the character should do once he is left behind, any ideas?

Hm, maybe too obvious, but what about finally using that damn phone?

"Hey Jo Buddy, where the fuck are you?"

Or he can befriend a mannequin and become a legend? :sneaky:

He starts to create a society that goes back to the whole cave man routes and destroys technology and plants trees and stuff and its all going well

then you realise that it's all in his head and that he went a tad crazy after a few months of being left completely alone

That sounds like a neat idea for a short story! :awesome:

Idk...maybe he could go on a quest of some sort to discover why everyone went to Mars, and could uncover some government conspiracy (since he can obviously get into government buildings if no one is there).

I dont know what direction to take this story, Technicolor sparks, I think why everyone left would be the revalation at the end, but i dont want it to be a critique of government and the powers that be, but a critique on technology.

thanks for your help guys

I think it would be interesting if security was somewhat computerised, just so he couldn't do whatever the hell he wanted, but is on a quest to find out what happened. I don't mean like walking robots but maybe small tanks or automated guns from CCTV cameras, he becomes a target and soon finds he will always be traced and found so he has to leave the city and learn how to survive in the countryside and after eventually going mad from loneliness he goes back to the city, to find that now everything hasn't been maintained he can pretty much do whatever the hell he likes (But some tanks/guns still work to make it interesting why the hell not) and then he can start piecing together the clues as to what happened. -breathes-

But thats not a short story.

No but I quite like it!

You can also start with when he wakes up and finds himself all alone in the world. And then from there have a flash-back to how life was before that, until you are at the point again where he's left alone.

Maybe when struggling to survive on his own he even finds out that all the time he was dependant on this technology as well? Like the alarm clock didn't go off this time. Or when he finds that his fridge broke down or is without power, he wants to call a repairman but the phone is dead of course. Or the boiler doesn't work anymore and he has only cold water and can't fix it. He tries to make a fire in the house/appartement to keep him warm and cook food, but then doesn't think of the smoke that has to escape somehow and the airflow in the house/appartment doesn't work either. Little things that we didn't know were already technology dependant suddenly become a struggle for the man. Or should it be specifically about communication technology?

Maybe the guy goes on a journey and finds on the way others like him that were also left behind. Or the flim shows him all alone, even dying when complaining about having spent his life all alone, while the viewer then sees that in the flat building next to him or in the same forrest where he dwelt there was another person living all along also thinking she was the only one, and maybe even more people show up all dying alone because they weren't aware of eachother's existence.

if the people really moved to Mars and this becomes clear in the end of the movie, then what was the reason they did that? They nearly used up all energy sources? Or they knew a meteor(ite) was going to hit the earth very likely? Maybe in the end of the movie the guy even sees something approaching in the sky and then sees it's a huge meteorite and then gets killed by it, just like half of the planet?

Ewgh, I am so procastinating ...

I was also going to suggest they thought the world was going to be hit by a comet, but I mean if they got it wrong, surely they'd come back as everything they've created on earth surely isn't worth leaving behind to go to a planet and start all over again.
