The guy who wrote that for Kennedy (his speech-writer) passed away recently. They had the goof-up about that on the radio here.

 

And the funny thing is, that sentence is one of the most famous (not infamous!) ones for Americans...most of us don't see the mistake in it! :D or I guess we wish to overlook it :P
