Paul Weller was the singer in the band and in my opinion he is an icon.

 

I, personally, think of them as a mod band (well mod revival) but for those new to The Jam, Wikipedia says

"The Jam were an English punk rock/New Wave/mod revival band active during the late 1970s and early 1980s"
