Coldplay's free download offering proved to be no shrinking violet when it went live on the band's Web site today (April 29).   The site slowed to a halt soon after new song "Violet Hill" -- which has a harder, more experimental sound than previous Coldplay releases -- was made available just after midday U.K. time. After several attempts, downloaders managed to obtain a copy of the track, the first from the upcoming album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends." The Web site asks for the us

Coldplay’s new single 'Violet Hill' was downloaded for free by over 600,000 people in the 24 hours since it was made available at 12.15pm on Tuesday (April 29).   In the first 12 hours it was downloaded by 300,000. This figure doubled overnight as other countries logged on to Coldplay.com, the source of the free download. The single will be available free for a week and will then be released as a paid-for digital single on May 6.   Meanwhile, Last.fm have been keen to point out that the Coldpla

Pink claims a first Hot 100 number one in her own right as Estelle’s American Boy accelerates into the Top 10 after being made available again as an individual download on iTunes.   Coldplay’s Viva La Vida exits the Top 10 after more than three months, dropping 7-14, but the UK retains a dual interest in the 10 with M.I.A.’s Paper Planes rising one place to a new peak of four and Estelle’s American Boy racing 53-9 in a remarkable turnaround in chart fortunes.   UK interest on the chart is led by

Sales of recorded music fell sharply in 2008, as consumers continued to migrate away from the CD format, large retailers reduced floor space for music and the recession dampened consumer spending during the critical year-end holiday shopping period.   Total album sales in the United States, including CDs and full-album downloads, were 428 million, a 14 percent drop from 2007, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan. Since the industry’s peak in 2000, album sales have declined 45 percent, althou

Microsoft has revealed the second iteration of their Xbox 360 karaoke franchise Lips, with Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" accompanying the official announcement of Lips: Number One Hits.   Perhaps the Lips: Uno listing on the Royalty Network was merely a code name for Lips: Number One Hits, the second installment of the singing game, due in October. The official announcement makes the game sound less like a full sequel and more like an expansion pack, forgoing mention of any new features in favor of

Who's going to like Coldplay's new record? Everyone who liked their previous records.   Given everything contained within, it's fitting that Coldplay decided to saddle their new album with two seemingly disparate titles (it's called Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, in case you weren't aware). Because if anything, it's the most bipolar thing they've ever done.   Lyrically, it's obsessed with the duality of, well, everything, full of ruminations on life and death, corporeal pleasure and

Coldplay's week started off with a bang as they released the album version of Midnight and the official remix by Giorgio Moroder. It was proceeded by a chart explosion which was aided by the instant grat downloads from those who had pre-ordered Ghost Stories that resulted in Midnight topping the ITunes charts of over 53 countries.   The Ghost Stories campaign is pretty much underway and it is expected to blow full steam ahead from Friday where it is likely we will hear new songs off the album

Calling all Coldplayers! Next weekend (27th/28th September), will be Coldplay's weekend on the music channel, VH1. Here is their 'blurb' for the weekend promotion:   Formed in 1997, alternative rock band Coldplay has risen far and fast in 10 years to be considered the anointed heirs of U2 for the title of best band in the world. Coldplay's misty and melodious sound prevails with passion, charm and strength of character that connects audiences warmly to their room of sanity.   Viva La Vida - Or D

Chris Martin isn't the only Coldplay member celebrating the pitter patter of tiny feet.   The singer and wife Gwyneth Paltrow had their second child, Moses, in April. But now the 29-year-old must be thinking about having a creche on the band's tour bus. Drummer Will Champion and wife Marianne had baby girl, Ava, two weeks ago. And bassist Guy Berryman's wife Jo is halfway through her pregnancy.   "The guys are over the moon with all the baby stuff," a spokesperson for the band tells us. Mariann

“ ‘People ask me, ‘What do you think of Coldplay?’ I have no opinion of Coldplay. I’m 50. I didn’t ask my dad what he thought of Roxy Music.’ ” His opinion should be “The cover of X&Y is a direct copy of my style.” Even Adrian Shaughnessy agrees….   At a time when invisible data streams of binary information fed straight to our desktops are doing away with the need for album covers, it’s odd to find a record sleeve as the subject of media comment and speculation. Odder still that the album c
