A recently filed music copyright suit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California - Satriani v. Martin - has revealed a new and unexpected application for the Web, namely, its potential as a forum for infringement analysis by amateur musicologists.   Long before any party to this litigation will be required to submit expert reports or summary judgement briefs, YouTube postings have offered remarkably insightful analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of the parties' respec

Many blockbuster acts will return. No. 1 bands like Radiohead and Coldplay will be working on new albums. Norman Mailer's new novel is a portrait of Hitler as a young boy, while Michael Chabon's alternate-history thriller is set amongst Yiddish-speaking Alaskans.   Some of the 2007's most anticipated albums come from established names. Coldplay is headed on a Latin American tour early this year to road test new material. The new album, which still has no title, could be ready in 2007 or early 20

As the music industry changes, so have the methods by which music is promoted. Traditional marketing is being replaced by artists and bands using social media sites like Twitter to engage fans, promote their work, and connect with others, writes Mashable, the social media guide.   The modern web and the future of the music industry seem almost inextricably intertwined in terms of marketing, listening, communicating, and purchasing. Twitter is one of the many ways for people to instantly and quic

MusicOHM have a positive review of Jon Hopkins' new album, Insides, which features a track heard partially on Coldplay's Viva La Vida ending. Don't forget you can download those nine minutes of 'electro loveliness', as Anchorman put it, for free by clicking here. Here's the review:   Jon Hopkins is a busy enough man not to have bother with releasing solo albums, but we should be thankful that he finds the time to pop into the studio because Insides is another beautiful and fully realised work of

Coldplay drummer Will Champion has spoken about the band's new recording sessions without lead singer Chris Martin. Coldplay are currently touring Australia but have recently been working on new material with producer Brian Eno.   Some of the sessions involved 'banning' frontman Chris Martin from the studio. Eno is renowned for his unique working methods in a recording studio, including his well-known Oblique Strategies. MusicRadar is guessing that the band working without Martin was a result o

Hundreds of unseen early photographs of Coldplay could be published in the next few years, MusicRooms have reported, in response to the latest Art History interview posted on Coldplay's official site this week. Whether this will happen or not is uncertain, but MusicRooms are certainly pushing the cause to get the photos out into the public domain.   They write that John Hilton, close friend of guitarist Jonny Buckland (pictured), has known the band since they formed at university in London in 19

Music Video Director Mark Romanek was in attendance at the impromptu Coldplay show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on March 11th, 2005. If Parlophone has indeed commissioned Mr. Romanek's services for "Speed of Sound" or any upcoming Coldplay single that happening should make for a great Coldplay video.   It's also possible that since Romanek's budgets for some of his videos can run on the expensive side (though he did Johnny Cash's "hurt" pretty much for free) Parlophone or Romanek himself m

Coldplay have registered the name, Mylo Xyloto (possible song or even album title?), according to the PRS database this week. It was found by a regsitered member of the database, who also happens to be a Coldplayer on the forum. It is also believed that the song 'Up With The BIrds', is another title that has been registered, and is also credited to Leonard Cohen as a co-writer, and contains samples. More discussion on this latest item is at the messageboard now. [thanks Spike, pansonic, Teco, ra

Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto is still more than a month away (it hits stores first on October 24th), which means there was plenty of time to tinker with the songs that will make the final cut - until now. The deadline for completing the album has passed! Roadie #42 has just tweeted today: "Bumped into Rik Simpson. Tells me: "We finished the album at 2am". It's on this USB stick. Get ready folks! Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto has snuck on to Spotify after shunning the streaming music sphere since its release in October last year, writes MusicWeek today. It appears that (at the time of writing) MX has not appeared on rival streaming music services such as Deezer and rara.com, nor has any official statement been made from the band or Spotify itself. The album lands only days after the back catalogue of Bob Dylan – another streaming stay-away – was made available to Spotify users. More discussion

The next of our featured Mylo Xyloto album review comes from the Houghton Times which is a student newspaper of Houghton College, Houghton (which is a hamlet within New York). A generally positive review but not without its criticisms of Mylo Xyloto, the review sums up the album saying: "As a whole, the album is carried by a handful of beautiful songs that are bubbling over with hope and happiness. And music that gives you hope, whether mainstream or obscure, is worth listening to." Read on for

Another featured review of Mylo Xyloto is from a new 2011 website based in Los Angeles, Blinded By Sound, described themselves as an internet outpost written by music obsessives. Another positive review overall, its thoughts captured by the line: "When taken in its entirety, MX is a beautifully produced record with all the soaring choruses and catchy melodies we have come to expect from Coldplay. What is missing, however, is the signature, distinctive, world-conquering appeal of one individual s

Coldplay head to Dallas to restart the Mylo Xylotour in the US, and while we've not found any Dallas previews online (yet), we have found one for the Houston shows on 25th and 26th June, entitled, "Making child’s play of your Coldplay date," which is a throw away article exploring the art of turning your man into a Coldplay fan. As well as this, Oxfam have also blogged their latest diary entry as they follow Coldplay around North America. Read on for both articles...   Your Houston News: With Br

The mystery surrounding a possible Coldplay gig at Knebworth House deepens. This week the band's frontman Chris Martin announced on their website the 2009 gig would not happen.   He said: "Well, we tried to get Knebworth but it just wasn't possible. So we're having to think of something else. In fact, I think we have thought of something else. Hopefully we'll be able to announce it soon. And hopefully it's not the same day that Oasis have booked it."   But speaking to the WHT Times 24 today (Tu

Natalie Imbruglia has announced details of her forthcoming new studio album, which features three co-writes with Coldplay. The album, entitled 'Come To Life', will be released on October 5. It will be preceded by a single, 'Want', on September 28.
