Two rock bands bound for Belfast this December are battling it out for the fastest-selling album of 2008. Coldplay and Kings of Leon are fighting it out to be the biggest band in the world.   Kings of Leon released their new album, Only By The Night, at the start of the week and are already seeing sales heading towards the 250,000 mark. The band, who headlined Glastonbury and Oxegen this year, play the Odyssey Arena on Saturday, December 20. Tickets for the show sold out within a few hours. The

How did Coldplay become the biggest band in the world? Take four unassuming London uni students, create anthems with soaring high notes and add guitars and lashings of emotion.   You are a bit perplexed. You know the song Yellow and that other one, the slow, sad one with the bit where the vocalist goes all high and vulnerable as he sings about a scientist. Or something. You're pretty sure there's a celebrity actor connection and maybe an oddly named child, too.   Coldplay - that's it. Yeah, yo

It all started on the 25th, when all of us (from coldplaybr) went to the airport to try to see Coldplay arriving. After 3 hours of waiting and a lot of anxiety and crossed information, we got to know that the band had already left through an alternate exit.   I went, along with Ana and Edu (people I met at the airport), by car to the hotel, to try to get there before the band, but no luck. As soon as we arrived we were informed by a group of girls that were already there that the band had arrive

Another Coldplay interview is available and online. This time from Clash Magazine. It starts like this:   The eyes of the world are watching. The airwaves are waiting. It’s been three years since the four mild-mannered stadium lords last came out survey their lot.   But as the glorious summer dawns on 2008, their vast empire has begun to excitedly scurry in preparation of their emergence since the first assertive noises emanated from their self-enforced creative exile. Finally stepping up once m

Sonic 102.9 FM will announce two concerts on Monday morning — at 7 and 7:30 a.m. But, according to a hint on Sonic's Twitter, Coldplay might be one of the announcements. "Could they be headed to E-town? http://tinyurl.com/8wq9dw" reads the post - directing readers to the LiTii video.   In an interview last year, guitarist Jonny Buckland said the band would reschedule the missed shows. "I think we'll definitely be replacing those in the new year," he says. "I'm not sure exactly when, to be honest

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Pop stars beware. The new owners of major record label EMI have warned artists they could be dropped if they do not work hard enough for the company.   Guy Hands, chief executive of private equity group Terra Firma, which agreed to buy EMI in May for 2.4 billion pounds ($4.9 billion), has written a memo to staff calling for "fundamental change" in the way it does business.   "There is no reason why we should not be more selective in whom we choose to work with," Hands wr

THE actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, the Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, arrived in Scotland yesterday for the wedding of their daughter Apple’s godfather.   Paltrow, 32, who has starred in Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr Ripley and Sylvia, wore a light pink jacket and dress and appeared relaxed and happy as she carried her 14-month-old daughter into the church.   The toddler, wearing a white dress, almost stole the bride’s thunder as she ran up and down the aisle. There are raised eyebrows in the Oasis camp over Coldplay’s decision to release their new album on a Thursday.   Coldplay hope their upcoming Viva La Vida will topple Oasis’ 11-year reign with Be Here Now as the fastest-selling British record. But the Manchester band’s team believe Coldplay are stealing their idea to do it. Be Here Now sold almost 700,000 copies in the first three days of sale in 1997. Oasis [Pictured, Noel Gallagher] released it on a Thursday — rather than the usual Monday — w

British supergroup Coldplay charmed Australian fans with a tribute to the Socceroos and a Shane Warne [pictured] joke when they opened the Down Under leg of their world tour in Brisbane.   Engaging frontman Chris Martin donned a Socceroos' scarf and marvelled at Australia's sporting credentials as Coldplay last night won over 12,000 enthusiastic fans at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.   "As English people we just have to ask is there anything you can't do?" he said. "The answer is 'no'."
