I don't agree with "the extended album" thing. Amazing Day and of course Adventure of a Lifetime seems very different to Ghost Stories. They are different albums for different things. For the rest of your post is great!

Coldplay is just Coldplay. With this banal sentence I mean that the band changes so much that it's impossibile to tell which genre the play. For me it's a pointless discussion. And, btw, for me they are the greatest. Probabily after 4th December too.
