  12. a little research for Mark Pwn From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with Owned. (Discuss) "PWN" redirects here. For other uses, see PWN (disambiguation). The slang term pwn ([as in own or phone]), a term used primarily in the Internetgamingculture, means to defeat an opponent with little or no competition. In this context, to be pwned can be defined as "to get your butt kicked," with the strong connotation of also having been "made a fool of." It is generally used for taunting of a player's in-game enemies, and rubbing in any victories. The term has become ubiquitous in Internet circles and is often used outside of gaming contexts. Its progressive form is "pwning." An example: "YTMND is pwning both Fark and Ebaum's world!" Its noun form is "pwnage" (or "pwnge", or sometimes simply "pwn"). An example: "Did you see that flame war? PWNGE!" Appending "zors" creates a humorous portmanteau of the word, e.g. pwnzors (also spelled xors or x0rz). To be "owned" in the gaming world is to be miserably defeated by an opponent or an opposing team. However, the term "pwned" is usually used when the loser is humiliated in a fair competition. [citation needed] The use of the word "own" in terms of victory over another predates its use in the gaming subculture. This accounts for the pre-existing proliferation of the word. The specific term "pwn" is most likely derived from a common misspelling, with no significant event proliferating its use [1][2]. It is assumed that it simply began to spread as a result of fast typing, due to the proximity of the P and O keys on the common QWERTY keyboard layout, and the tendency of gamers and net users to create and expand internet memes. Pre-dating the early and mid 90's usage of pwn in gaming, PWN was used in Phrack (an underground publication filled with content for/from hackers and phreakers). Each issue of Phrack would contain a section entitled Phrack World News, or PWN as it was referred to. [citation needed] In the 27th episode of 'The Transformers' entitled 'Microbots' (airdate 7th of October 1985) the phrase "He must be pawning the living daylights out of the Autobots" is clearly said near the end of the episode. Pwn's origin may stem from the Blizzard EntertainmentRTS game Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. During multi-player games, when one player conquers another, the typo 'Player_1' pwns 'Player_2' appeared. [citation needed] [edit] Pronunciation Given the recent development of the word, and its primary use in written form only, there is no single accepted pronunciation of pwn, as there are no vowels. Therefore, pronunciation is usually determined by personal preference and the context of the game being played. Common variations include (IPA pronunciation) [oʊn], [pəʔˈoʊn], [piˈoʊn], [pən], [pwin], [pun], or, most commonly [poʊn] or pawn, as rhymed with the original own; ([oʊn]). It can also be pronounced phonetically, as [pwəʔˈn̩] (pwən). However, some still choose to pronounce the word "own", whilst still using the spelling PWN, giving reference to its original misspelling.
