Oktoberfest reject Chinese-made lederhosen
The Munich Oktoberfest, the world's biggest beer festival, normally reverberates to the sound of cheery drinking songs, slapping of thighs and the oom-pah-pah of the tuba. This year there are also howls of protest that Bavaria's heritage is under attack from cheap lederhosen made in China. For the purist, a true Bavarian wears only lederhosen made from the hide of a Bavarian deer and stitched and embroidered by a Bavarian tailor, preferably in an Alpine village with cow bells tinkling nearby. However, Otto Dufter, the chairman of the Bavarian Federation of Folk Costume Societies, says that this year, costumes worn by many at the festival are “yuppie outfits” that have nothing to do with true Bavarian dress. “Our societies exclusively use the domestic lederhosen makers,” he said. “We don't use any pseudo-costumes made abroad.” The row concerns the leather shorts and dirndl - the traditional Alpine woman's dress. New Oktoberfest fashions such as dirndl punk — a revealing combination of tight leather hotpants and deep-cleavage corsets — have angered Bavaria's folk societies, which still buy their lederhosen, felt hats, knitted socks and frilly frocks from home-grown tailors. Munich department stores admit that many of the outfits on sale are made from imported leather and fabrics, or are manufactured in China, India or Eastern Europe to save costs. They say that many local people want their costumes to be affordable because they wear them only once a year at the Oktoberfest. “Folk costumes should be made where they're worn because heritage refers to one's homeland,” Hans Lehrer, a member of the Munich-based Isargau folk costume society, said. “I'm against people buying lederhosen made in Romania just because it's cheaper.” Mr Lehrer said embroidered lederhosen made from Bavarian deerhide cost from 600 euros (£470), while the imported equivalent cost about 150 euros. “But it's worth paying the extra money,” he added. “A good lederhose is like a second skin and it will last you your whole life if you don't get fat.” Oktoberfest fashions change from year to year, with variations in pattern, cut and colour, and Munich women face peer pressure to keep up with the trends. Despite the global fame of the festival, almost three quarters of visitors are from Munich and the surrounding area. In recent years the imported clothes have pushed prices down to the point where many lederhosen tailors have gone bankrupt, according to Alexander Wandinger, an expert on the folk dress. “We have fewer than a hundred traditional tailors left,” he said. Folk societies from across Bavaria paraded their costumes defiantly at the opening of the Oktoberfest at the weekend in a procession that included wind bands and mountain farmers giving impressive displays of Bavarian thigh-slapping dances and rhythmic whip-cracking. The parade was broadcast live on nationwide television. Mr Dufter said that the city of Munich had managed to make the beer festival more traditional in the past three years by ordering oom-pah bands in the tents to play more local music and to keep the volume down. About 900,000 people visited the festival at the weekend, consuming 450,000 litres of beer supplied exclusively by Munich's six main breweries and specially brewed to a higher strength for the event. The festival runs until October 5. Follow my leder During the 19th century in Bavaria it became fashionable among the nobility to follow the “pastoral” style of dress. The traditional long sheepskin trousers of farmers and country people were shortened — in line with contemporary aristocratic fashions — and embroidered. During a later revival of the trend, in 1913, the Archbishop of Munich declared short lederhosen immoral Source: Bavaria-Lederhosen.com http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article4813287.ece

Wheelchair on plane bursts into flames
A holiday jet carrying 229 passengers narrowly avoided disaster when a wheelchair stored in the hold burst into flames shortly after landing at Manchester airport. Ground staff unloading baggage from the hold of the First Choice holiday jet noticed blue sparks coming from the chair, it was revealed today. The chair was removed from the Boeing 757-200 jet and placed on a vehicle - where it immediately burst into flames and was destroyed. The scare happened on Sunday September 7, when the First Choice flight FCA 2662 jet landed in the early hours of the morning after a flight from Fuerteventura. A spokeswoman for Manchester Airport praised the ground handling staff who "spotted the hazard and reacted quickly." The battery on the wheelchair should have been disconnected in the Canary Islands, she added. The scare today prompted the Civil Aviation Authority to issue a warning to passengers about the dangers of "seemingly innocuous items," said a spokesman. Geoff Leach, manager of the Dangerous Goods Office at the CAA, said: “Thankfully no-one was injured as a result of the Manchester incident. "The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but it does highlight the need for passengers to be extremely vigilant when taking items on board aircraft. "Passengers need to be aware that some items, which are relatively innocuous in everyday use, are capable of posing a serious risk to the occupants of an aircraft, no matter where they are carried onboard and therefore need to be carefully checked.” In highlighting the dangers, the CAA pointed to a fire aboard another aircraft in February, 2007, that was caused by a short circuiting camera battery. The fire started in an overhead locker in an aircraft that had just taken off from New York JFK Airport. Cabin crew managed to extinguish the fire, but the aircraft had to return to New York for an emergency landing. The CAA issued a checklist for battery powered wheelchairs: - ensuring the battery is securely attached to the wheelchair; - protecting the battery and chair from short circuiting; and - ensuring that the wheelchair cannot become switched on during transport. Spillable batteries are subject to additional requirements. In all cases, passengers should contact their airline in advance to check what special conditions apply, added the CAA. Said Leach: “Passengers frequently travel with electronic gadgets or other battery powered items and, although the batteries in these rarely pose a safety problem, if they are loose or the equipment is inadvertently activated there is a danger of fire.” A spokeswoman for First Choice said its flights are equipped with fire prevention equipment in the hold as a precautionary measure. And she added: "Customer safety is of paramount importance to First Choice Airways and sister company Thomsonfly. "We can confirm an electric wheelchair caught fire whilst it was being unloaded from the rear hold of the aircraft by ground handling staff at Manchester airport on September 7. "The fire was swiftly brought under control and the wheelchair immediately removed from the vicinity of the aircraft. We would like to clarify that at no point were our passengers or crew in any danger. "First Choice Airways and all ground handlers follow governing body guidelines as regards to handling battery powered wheelchairs. "We are currently carrying out an investigation into the incident and are fully co-operating with the UK CAA Dangerous Goods Department." http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/news/article4810663.ece?token=null&offset=12&page=2

Coldplay Live's Positivity Day
We haven't said you can't request your favourite song, as I explained in the other thread. And I'm not bitching at you for posting opinions. I am requesting some positivity for a change instead of the same thing being posted in every live thread, which is tantamount to ramming it down people's throats. As I said in the OP, constructive criticism is a good thing. and lets look at it from Chris' point of view. He's already neurotic about the media. if he were to look at any of the live threads, his head would explode with confusion. Fan A says its boring because the setlist never changes, I want them to play the hokey cokey. They change the setlist but to put the hokey cokey in, they have to take out twinkle twinkle little star. Fan A then moans that they took twinkle twinkle little star out and changed the setlist. (and i know these aren't Coldplay songs, but i felt that if i used real songs there was a danger of being accused of picking on particular people, which I'm not because there's more than one person doing the same thing. Logically, they can't keep every fan happy, and are unlikely to be reading this board to decide their setlist.

Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)
I'm not ranting. I'm just expressing my opinion that its got very boring people keep moaning in every thread. particularly when those people are the same people who are then contradicting themselves. yes you have the right to ask them to change the setlist, but why somewhere that isn't going to affect them. the Nettie example works because she had a sign at the concert, where he boys could see it.

Coldplay Live's Positivity Day
nooooooooo. I don't mind you coming back from a show and saying this was bad, or they didn't play this song. its the people who haven't been to a show for weeks who moan in every live thread that has broken me. My patience has finally snapped after 3 months.

Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)
its not so much the complaining that your favourite song wasn't played as the people who on the one hand moan that the setlist doesn't change but then in the next thread moan that their favourite song was taken out and replaced. either you want the setlist to vary or you want to see your favourite song every time. Its extremely unlikely you're going to get both. yes, I understand wanting your favourite song played, but why keep mentioning it in every single live thread on here. yes, I'm sure that people connected to Coldplay read this board occasionally, but I'm quite sure they don't read every single post, because they're busy on tour. agreed they have played Reign of Love & Yes, on numerous occasions. You've also complained that the setlist hasn't changed. Which do you want?

Coldplay Live's Positivity Day
I'm declaring today a negativity free day in the Coldplay Live section. I'm bored of reading the same moans & complaints. Constructive criticism is fine but moaning for the sake of it and not offering a solution is banned. So, today I challenge you to find something positive to say when you're reading the live threads. I want to be able to enjoy reading the reviews as I'm copying & pasting them.

leasing companies allow you to sign-write their vehicle, but I guess you have to return it in the original colour. van companies do the same, if a business can't afford/doesn't want to buy its own van they can lease it and insure it as their own, adding their company details to the side. I guess he's being sensible, like Ian. If he knows he's in a place where he might lose them, he takes them off. I bet he'd rather explain to Gwyneth that the ring was feeling lose that day than to have to explain how his wedding ring turned up on ebay after it flew off into the crowd!! the home of Coldplaying of course, Manchester :P hey, nice to see you. thanks for the review. I'd guess the lighting would have to be the same for the second Fix You because it would be too short notice for the techs to change anything
