Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/features/arts/music/blog/2008/12/coldplay_v_satriani_similar_fe.html Interesting commentary there. Some good points. :laugh3: Sounds like you need to take a breather, dude. Why not head on down to the world of music? I'm currently compiling an albums of the year list there- the more lists the merrier. Or how about the lounge to talk about something random and silly? Just get your mind off it all. There are good people around here- I haven't been hanging around the last 3 1/2 years for no reason. But it always helps to keep some perspective if you're going to be spending time on a board. Remember, nothing we do or say can change the outcome of this case. It's in the hands of the legal system now. ;)

Rate the latest movie you've seen
Pass mark was 60 (so 6) where I went to school. Anything below a 50 would just be exploring the degree of suckiness. 70 was ok, but meant you could have done better. 90s were rare, but fantastic. Knock off the zeros and that's the scale I use- 5 - mediocre, 6 - worth watching but barely. 7 - competent, 8 - good, 9 - fantastic 10 - near perfect or legendary.

Is this a bootleg of the new Coldplay song?
:dozey::rolleyes: :laugh3: Well at least that song has something worth copying in it, unlike that flying one. Which kind of sucks. Alot.

Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
That's fine...no hard feelings. It's just in this thread, everything is subject to Joe Satriani is STUPID...and Joe Satrian is a WHINER....and Joe Satriani SUCKS. I was just hoping we could start a new thread where we talk about the legal arguments and legal consequences...No big deal. A new thread would descend into that too... Well I do agree... if Coldplay lose this, it will set a terrible precedent for any songwriter trying to come up with something both original and powerful. Any good repeating 3 note riff a la Franz Ferdinand could potentially be a lawsuit waiting to happen. At the same time, I really don't think EMI's lawyers would have let it get this far if they weren't confident that they would win.

Chris Martin on Neil Cole's NME Radio Show Wednesday 10th December
You can download it directly from the NME site: http://www.nme.com/radar_mp3s/nme-radio-neil-cole-chris-martin.mp3 Pretty good interview. Aww... sucks that they're having a bad time of it with what's his face. :( Kitty Daisy & Lewis are amazing! :shocked2: Never heard of them before, but glad he mentioned them. Oldschool

They're the defendant. There isn't much that Coldplay could say publicly without it potentially being used against them in court. One misplaced word could lose the case. And we all know how well people (ie the press) understand when Chris tries to explain something... "OH NO! COLDPLAY ARE SPLITTING UP!!!" "But I just said I was working hard right now!?" Welcome to legal land. :dozey: It's a strange, counterintuitive, and often unfair place, and Coldplay will be living there for a while.

Good to hear from them. :nice: Reassuring. Of course it sounds a bit like lawyer speak. In a statement like that one misplace comma, let alone word can make or break a case, and in fact has before. It still amuses me that Nik caught that one the day the song came out. More amusing still that it took everyone else this long to notice... http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44487

Still feels like it happened yesterday... or last month, at least- it took a good month to be able to concentrate again. It means that when Chris isn't having a bad day he's one of the nicest people on the planet. :nice:

^^Now that was just mean. :sick2: Now if we want to talk about music from 35 years earlier, looks like Satriani actually ripped off Cat Stevens! :shocked2: Found this in the comments of a National Post article: [ame=http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8lWjg_xlVxg]YouTube - Cat Stevens - Heaven[/ame]

How about *right now*. When will it actually go to trial? Who knows. It could turn out to be extremely drawn out.

Chris was joking about it at that Yahoo concert, long before the suit was formally filed. :laugh3: No. Sincere yes, good communicator? Just plain no. Honestly, the band probably doesn't have much say in how this all plays out. Yes it's their song, but it's also a massive hit for their label, and therefore one of the two big pieces of leverage EMI have had against their creditors this year. (The other being the one with the girls and the kissing...) The company can't afford to lose this- it could destroy them. Therefore chances are great big scary corporate lawyers took over the whole case the moment that it became serious and are now running the show. Speaking in public about a lawsuit is often a no-no because anything can be used against them later.
