  1. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzMcNAe4nE8]YouTube - Florence + the Machine - You've Got the Love[/ame] Ok, as Disco covers go, it may be a little bit inevitably cheesy. But it can still make my spirits soar a thousand feet high. And I like the lyrics. YES. I almost went with this one instead, but since you beat me to it... I used to grumble so much that this belonged on the radio but never would be. She's on a major label and it's such a great song. A year and a half later and suddenly it's the hot new thing. I guess something great can slip through every once in a while after all.
  2. Few songs on the planet annoy me quite as much as Katy Perry's "I kissed a girl". There's something about her voice in that particular song that's worse than fingernails on a chalkboard for me. So I was going to go with that for this, until I was introduced to something even worse about a hour ago. Seriously, :wtf: is wrong with people? :freak: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0]YouTube - Rebecca Black - Friday (OFFICIAL VIDEO)[/ame] That makes me want to die inside.
  3. Water, please. So I was listening to some classical music with my Dad the other day when it dawned on me that although symphonies and such tend to be indistinguishably long and instrumental, the structure and length is actually almost identical to a pop album. Usually there are 3 or 4 movements within a piece, and each movement is broken down into 3 or 4 distinct sections (sorry it`s too late for me to think of proper names). Each of those sections are usually about 3 to five minutes long each (sort of like a pop song) and the total number of sections if you combine the movements is usually between about 8 and 16. (Sort of like a pop album.) The total length of a piece can vary a fair bit depending on the conductor, but it usually comes in at around 40 minutes to an hour. (Getting the picture yet?) My point is, I don't think modern recording length is just something arbitrary we dreamed up in the 20th century. It's been that way in western music for centuries. Maybe it's a reflection of our natural attention spans? Under 5 minutes for something being the same in the short term, under 60 minutes for paying attention the long term? And yes, just like many pop/rock/whatever albums there are plenty of classical examples of pieces that push those boundaries- 15 minute gems and 2 and a half hour epic marathons. But we keep coming back to about 45 or 50 minutes. It's a length that feels structured and complete. I say go with what works for your material. 45 minutes is a nice length. Some things justify an hour an a half- the material is so tight that nothing can possibly be left out. Some things justify being short- they're so perfect the way they are that adding anything else to fill out the time would diminish the whole. It's when a more unconventional length becomes a distraction from the content that an album is too short or too long. The Suburbs could afford to be shorter and maybe a shorter running time would have made the remaining songs shine a little bit brighter. tKoL is too short because it feels unfinished. One more song could have balanced out the sections of the album better. But then I still love them both very much.
  4. Wow that was close. :sweatdrop: Congratz Natascha, you`d better like that book.
  5. I`ve tried to like them. I never get through more than half of a song, even a song I liked at first, because the guitar is too screechy. I hate, hate, hate screechy 70s guitar ******y, no matter how good it is. It gives me a splitting headache within about two minutes and if it miraculously doesn`t, I get bored in about 3. *pouts* (But I really loved Raising Sand, for whatever that`s worth. But then it didn`t have screechy guitar stuff.)
  6. Oh all right, because anything else would be a lie, [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KkWGy7W3_o]YouTube - Coldplay - Clocks[/ame] And because many years and hundreds if not thousands of listens later it can still make my stomach bottom out and give me goosebumps if I hear it unexpectedly. And because the first time I heard it kicked off a long and twisting series of events that changed my tastes, my world view, and eventually my life. (Strange thing is, among Coldplay songs, Shiver is my favorite.) Runners up, because really if Clocks wasn't such a sentimental favorite this would have been an impossible choice: Arcade Fire - Wake Up The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun Joy Division/New Order - Ceremony Radiohead - Reckoner The Verve - Lucky Man
  7. I'm in... been watching others do this on Facebook, but don't use FB enough to bother there myself. Though I should make an effort to cross-post.
  8. For me uh.... :\ 1. Kid A/In Rainbows/OK Computer 4. Amnesiac/The Bends/King of Limbs 7. Hail to the Thief v v v 8. Pablo Honey So about a very honourable 4 to 6? :inquisitive: I voted 5 before I worked it out in writing. But then many days I actually like Amnesiac more than Kid A, so... it's all subjective I guess. (Actually I usually shuffle Kid A and Amnesiac together into a single superalbum these days.) Anyway, I still love it very much and play it frequently. And is it just me, or is Separator the SINGLE HAPPIEST SONG Thom has ever written? :pleased: It feels like a bright, sunny morning after it's been raining for a week. There's a warm breeze in your hair and sun on your face and it's like for a single shining moment anything is possible. And for once, the lyrics seem to say pretty much the same thing the music is: "Like I'm falling out of bed from a long and weary dream Finally I'm free of all the weight I've been carrying" Can't get enough of that one. :nice: :dozey: Don't let them hurry you up, that's the best way to get into one of their albums. Eventually you will wear it out and then start a new one. It's slower, but much more thorough. But 4 minutes is about how much it's too short by. Even one minute might have been enough. It's like when someone doesn't play the last notes in a tune or say the last bit of a sentence and you're left there hanging, waiting for that tiny little bit more.
  9. Ah. :( Hey, top 10 ain't bad. It's stupendous, actually.
  10. But random is such a useful word...
  11. So if we vote you into first place now, does that mean you'll do two covers? :wink3:
  12. Still voting when I think of it.
  13. Fifth time through and still loving the album. There isn't a bad song on it, and I love the way it all flows along together as a whole. It just needs to be about 1 or 2 songs longer. This has probably already been posted, but it was kind of inevitable, wasn't it?   [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xgeT2hzxrQ]YouTube - Thom gets down to "Single Ladies" (LOTUS FLOWER DUB)[/ame]
  14. McDonald's food still gives me a stomach ache. :sick2:

    What about mp4s?
  16. Oscillators as in I get a bunch of real life electronic chips and components, and then wire them up to make sounds. I have a couple of designs in my head for when I can find/afford/make the parts I need for a couple of kind of unusual electronic instruments. Theoretically I could build my own guitar pedals, but I want a better idea of what I'm doing before I try.
  17. Hmm... I quite like Feral. I like the high-hat thing it has going on. It kind of reminds me of this, which I'm guessing is half-way intentional: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnzShQ1PN0A]YouTube - AFX & Squarepusher - Freeman Hardy & Willis Acid[/ame]
  18. I'm an electronic tinkerer- I don't think I would really count as a musician. I can build my own oscillators, and like messing around with found sounds. I'm trying to learn bass guitar. I also compose some, but I haven't figured out how to bring it all together yet.
  19. On first listen I like Separator best, closely followed by the previous three, but is that because I like them best or because they're the only things I could hold on to memories of as the album melted away through my ears. Such a beautiful album- it just sort of lets you float along through it. That would be interesting if it is backloaded... usually albums are frontloaded to keep you listening. Happy now. :nice: That shook me out of a little of my winter blues. :sunny:
  20. I got my ears pierced when I was in Europe just after I turned 18 because I wasn't allowed to have pierced ears. It hurt. Not at first- the gun they use works so fast that you don't really feel anything but a pop. But later they ached quite a bit for 2 or 3 hours. I was actually more upset about being told that it wouldn't hurt than I was about it hurting at the time. Overall, it wasn't bad, and it was worth it because I like wearing crazy one-of-a-kind jewelry, but necklaces like that can overwhelm you. Earrings are just the right amount of crazy without standing out too much. It depends on the guy, his attitude, and what sort of shape he's in. Most guys who would go though with it have a terrible attitude which is a huge turn-off and makes it seem really sleazy and gross. The others are in terrible shape which ruins the whole effect. Ugh, I knew a guy who had his pierced and he would always play with them through his shirt. It was an unconscious tick. Everyone would be like ew, please stop, but then he would start again a couple of minutes later. :bomb:
  21. Saw them at the free concert last night. I'd like to say they were great- they seemed it, but I didn't dress warm enough and was having trouble paying attention through the shivering and hypothermia and such. :uhoh2:  I was so happy to see them again, though. I wish I didn't have to choose between getting Seeds and King of Limbs right now due to lack of funds.
  22. I've seen a few episodes of the Canadian version. Interesting stuff.
