  24. YAY! Willuv! hehe found this interview, thought it was quite good. "there's nothing worse than a lippy drummer.." hehe NEWSWEEK: Do you each have roles in the band? I hear Chris’s job is to be the worrier. What’s yours? Will Champion: I’m the person that says no to everything. I don’t know why. There’s always loads of offers coming to us and the management--even though they know pretty much what we’re going to say--they have to tell us just so we know what’s going on. So I’m usually the one that says no to everything, like sponsorships, endorsements, all that kind of crap. Has the dynamic changed as you guys have aged and enjoyed more and more success? It has intensified and kind of polarized our relationship. When it’s good now, it’s amazing. And when it’s bad, it can be pretty tough. We still have a lot arguments, but that’s good because it’s a sign that we’re all still really passionate about it. If we didn’t care, we wouldn’t have arguments. We’d just let Chris do whatever he wants and sit back and, you know, count money. [Laughs.] Are the disagreements usually about musical decisions? I would say 90 percent, yeah. Often, it’s just stupid, bickering things--pointless stuff that just comes from being in the same room together for 18 months. Three of the guys, including you, are married now. Chris has a baby. Do you worry about how family life might change the band? Yes. Well--I don’t worry about it. I think about it, definitely. But it’s impossible to expect a band to live in a complete cultural vacuum. Some people are very good at projecting an image of themselves as having no responsibilities. You know, “Aren’t we crazy?” But I’m not really into lying about our image or lying about who we are. Because I think people can smell that a mile away. You can instantly tell when people aren’t for real. I see lots of bands around that have got a great style and a great image, but their songs are terrible. Style over substance is boring to me. Aside from Chris, the three of you really don’t have much of a public persona at all. Do you think that will continue as the band continues to grow in popularity? In my mind, there’s nothing worse than a lippy drummer, you know what I mean? Just play the drums and shut up. [Laughs.] But I think we appreciate that our reticence has thrust Chris forward even more. And it affects the way the band is viewed. It makes it seem like we don’t have the kind of democracy within the band that I know we actually have. So this time around, we really want to drive home the fact that it’s not just about Chris. It’s a strange dynamic and it’s worked really well for us so far, but now it’s our responsibility to take some of that pressure off Chris. Not by going out and punching photographers or anything like that. Just by insisting, like in magazines, that there are four of us. Otherwise it’s not going to happen. When Chris got married, did you think, “OK, our singer married a famous actress. We are officially rock stars.” [Laughs.] No, no. To be honest, it was hard to think of it in any other terms than it was our best mate marrying someone he loves. It’s quite hard to be cynical about your friend finding happiness. You guys are the subject of the gossip pages now. What’s the best untrue stuff you’ve read about the band? Well, all of the stuff at the beginning was like, none of us drink and none of us smoke. For three years, we were Oxford graduates who played Scrabble and never drank and never went out. You know, whatever sells.
